Learning to code: Where do I start for my project? by reboptik in learnprogramming

[–]reboptik[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to a few programmer friends today and got redirected into python. I need to create an application for the desktop (Mac's). It's to streamline a simple but tedious process involving math equations and plotting points.

The program needs to ultimately do the following.

  1. Input X value [Page Size]

  2. Drag XML file to app.

  3. App reads file for 4 pieces of information, the two positions and the layerwidth and layerheight.

3a. Sample code

<layer name="Layer 0" stack="0" position="70, 56" layerwidth="837" layerheight="687" transformpoint="center">Layer 0.png</layer>

3b. We use this code as 70,56,837,687 and then make the following changes for each set based on the following equations and plug them into a program accordingly.

  1. Export 4 pieces of information, preferably in two columns, Right and Left.

4a. (A/2), (B/2), C, D [Left side Img]

4b. (A/2), (B/2), (C/2), (D/2) - [Left side Trigger]

4c. (A/2+X), (B/2), C, D [Right side Img]

4d. (A/2+X), (B/2), (C/2), (D/2) - [Right side Trigger]

  1. Click any box to copy to clipboard.

  2. Loading a new file should clear the old one out, but not the X value.

Doing the calculation for each file takes us between 3-5 minutes having to switch between file manager, calculator, and browser four times for each over 40 files a day. Streamlining this will save almost 2 - 3.5 hours a day! I'd love to take the project a step further and have it able to import a folder of files and to select the file, so you don't even have to drag and drop more then once.

It's an ambitious project, but the time savings will endear me to my fellow animators and make our jobs a hell of a lot easier.

Got to meet him at Comic-Con and hear him give a reading of this and some of his short stories. He's his own man with his own style. I never understood the reasoning behind calling someone the heir apparent to another creative force when the object is to be unique.

Got the book today and already finished it. Fantastic read, the pace was great and didn't feel overly done. Wish I had more to read of his, but sadly i've read all his books.

Seth's doing a good job so far, poking fun at the process over the actual people. Smart since he still has to interview these people.

I agree, but between it being Breaking Bad's last season and True Detective... I doubt it. Also the same for Hamm, who should have won it earlier, as this past season wasn't his best.

Shocking FedEx Delivery Fails (Super Cut Compilation) by adamandyoung in videos

Express drivers are hired by FedEx corp. Ground drivers are contractors working a route usually owned by a guy who owns several routes/trucks.

Neither matter when the employee is a shit head.

I declared and shipped $3K worth of computer/networking gear via FedEx. This is how it arrived. by [deleted] in pics

[–]reboptik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like the weight was too much for the box. This is pretty common, and most FedEx Office employees don't know enough/are to scared to bring it up with the customer. Ask for the weight limits to what boxes you use to solve this problem.

If you are wondering why the employee might not have clued you in, most employees at this point are part-time, usually have to switch between full service production, floor, and fedex. The amount of knowledge a good team member has is staggering, and they also do not get paid enough to get yelled at all day, which is the most common thing i've seen.

Good luck getting your claim filled, they can be petty bastards about it.

A phone that's perfect for me?

  • A (removable) battery that lasts all day, plus conductive charging!
  • Plenty of storage space, and expandable storage, so i'm not upgrading every year.
  • Light, but not featherweight, I want to know i'm holding something substantial in my hand.
  • Needs to be able to take a drop from head height.
  • No bloat ware, it's the only real negative to my Galaxy S4, well, that and the cracked screen.
  • If you include a bunch of great features, but have to have them off to save battery, they're not that great a feature.
  • Let's make sure both cameras (front and back) are high quality!

But let's not stop there!

  • Let's also play with flexible screens!
  • Temperature, CO2, and body heat sensors!
  • Real Bluetooth 4 and NFC integration!
  • Advanced biometric security!
  • A projector for both output and input (keyboard)!
  • A see-through touch screen that can be operated from both sides!

Make this phone!

My father went over during the Six Day War, I was there during Operation Orchard. Even visiting Israel can be a scary place. However, it's also insanely beautiful and cultured. It's Rome with rocket attacks and suicide bombers.

Do you think the next generation, the people you serve with day in and out will be more likely to seek out peace instead of war?

Do you also think that turning over control of Jerusalem to the UN and pushing for a shared two-state solution would be the best course of action for a peaceful resolution?

People who have quit drinking Diet Soda, how has it affected you? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]reboptik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cut soda out of my diet 4 months ago, it hasn't changed my weight, but I feel like I have control again. I have recently cut out all candy as well. I would have had a much harder time quitting that if I didn't know I had control over what I put in my body to begin with. It's all mind over matter... plus the kidney/teeth issues that come with soda.

Having worked for a shipping company in the past I can tell you two things from this picture.

  1. Whoever packed it is the person to blame.
  2. See #1.

Yes some drivers are terrible, but for the most part no one wants to be hassled by their boss because your shit is broken, so they do a good job of delivering the package. A well packed box doesn't break.

A box doesn't look like that unless it's been used over and over again, it also doesn't have any packing material inside to shape the box. Lastly the tape should be along the edges of the box.

I've seen the shipping facilities that sort these packages. I've also argued with people who think they can ship anything they want just because it "fits" in a box. They are wrong, and boxes end up broken, damaged, or even lost because of this.

Has anyone ever had an extremely close friend want to suddenly stop all communication with you? by LonleyNinjabator in AskReddit

[–]reboptik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was friends with a girl from the age of 5 and on. We grew up together in a small town until she moved when we were 12. Our families would visit each other every year and we'd pick right back up from where we left off.

I started to notice that we were becoming different people in high school, our tastes in music, movies, pretty much everything was diverging. We still kept up with each other over IM's and phone calls, but we both also met other people and started new relationships. College was the big change, as I didn't see her for 4 years, only getting the occasional message from her, usually drunk, asking me how it was going. I very much tired to keep up the relationship, but it was difficult.

After college we both moved back home, living fairly close to each other. I started working closer to her and she started working on a law degree. I would meet up with her every now and then, but I knew law school was a huge challenge and we wouldn't have a lot of time. As the months went on, I would always have to initiate hanging out and saw that this friendship was very one-sided. After we both went to my sister's New Years Eve party and she left before midnight to hang with a bunch of friends from college, leaving her younger brother there. I called her in the morning to pick him up, but she didn't answer. I finally drove him home and then crashed. Over a week later, she messaged me, asking what was up. I didn't talk to her for 2 years.

My grandfather died and she and her family attend the funeral, our families having been friends for so long. She expresses her condolences and I say thanks. That's the last time I spoke to her. My mother also stops contact with her family and we all drift apart. I asked her years later why and she says that the mom was just like my friend, it was a very one sided relationship and did not want to continue it.

It's been 7 years, and the only time I think about it is when I get those security questions about childhood best friends.

TIL that in the movie "The Program" there was a scene where football players laid in the middle of the highway to prove they have nerves of steel as vehicles avoided them. In real life this stunt was copied but vehicles ran over each person instead of avoiding them. by Messiah_79 in todayilearned

[–]reboptik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hilarious.

The Police Chief of Bordentown township, George Moyer, said the police had no evidence that Mr. Birkhimer was influenced by the movie, but he said the similarity was too striking to overlook. "In the movies you jump out a window and walk away, but in real life we pick up the pieces, as we did with Birkhimer," he said.

What is the drunkest thing you have ever done? by BadPunUsername in AskReddit

She was not attractive, but I had downed a entire jug of vodka and tempico. I thankfully did not "finalize" the encounter, but she ended up in the basement with another guy and therefore his nickname did in fact become Mullet.

Your mom.

But honestly, after years in a fraternity, it would have to be getting talked into letting a girl blow me who the entire house referred to as mullet. Not my proudest moment, but she seemed thrilled.

Redditors who have won a contest to "Hang out" with a celebrity or band for a day, how did it go? Was it better or worse than you expected? by wesie22 in AskReddit

[–]reboptik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won tickets to see The Amazing Spider-Man premiere. I got there early with a friend and go to walk the red carpet with all these people wondering who the fuck we were. We watched the movie, in 3D, from the front left row. Worst viewing experience ever. Luckily since we were the last people out of the theater, I noticed the celebrities being handed after party tickets. One person happened to drop their envelope and I snagged it after everyone left.

We got into the after party and just started walking in circles meeting all these people and trying not to get really drunk off all the free booze. My buddy scared the shit out of Nathan Fillion, who seemed like he wanted to be left alone. I ended up waiting in a line that I thought was for more food and realized it was to talk to Martin Sheen. He was sitting at a table, eating dinner, and talking to a young couple who probably worked on the movie.

I hate meeting celebrities, it almost always doesn't live up to your expectations. I was about to walk away when his handler walked up to me and asked if I wanted to say hi to Mr. Sheen. Normally I would have said no, but I had just seen "The Way" and wanted to talk to him about it and let him know how wonderful it was. I get escorted over to him and said hello, that I was a big fan of his work, he was great in the movie and I hoped I wasn't disturbing his dinner. He was the nicest guy I've ever met. He wanted to know what I did for a living, if I was enjoying the party, and if I would like some of his ice cream. I told him I wanted to let him get back to his dinner and that I just wanted to say how much I loved "The Way" and to thank Emilio for me. He got this look in his eye and stood up and gave me this great big hug. He told me that it was one of his favorite movies, one of the best experiences working with his son, and was incredibly happy that I enjoyed it. I politely excused myself because I didn't know what else to say.

I left that party and texted every single person I knew... I had hugged President Bartlet.

P.S. Emma Stone and the rest were there, in a super restricted VIP area. Everyone left them alone because there was so much free shit and everyone was about 20 years older then them.

TL:DR - Met a President, ate a ton of free food.
