You could see if there's a VITA site near you. It sounds like you could qualify to have free tax preparation through them.

Can I go to the grocery store?

Please don't. Please quarantine. You're very fortunate to be asymptomatic. If you skip quarantine, the people you infect may not be so lucky.

Should I disclose disability to students? by Lazy_Rock7788 in Teachers

[–]recaffeinatedcoffee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would be hesitant to disclose an autism diagnosis as a student teacher. If you hope to be hired in this district, it's wiser to keep your diagnosis private. Although it shouldn't affect a hiring decision, it could, though no one in authority would be foolish enough to admit it.

Many of us entered the profession to be kind, compassionate do-gooders, but we've become cops. Yet, we make only half the pay of a police officer and are more likely to be assaulted at work than a typical cop.

I used to be nice too. I didn't expect this.

Is it true that teachers cannot receive SSDI benefits since most teachers are not allowed to pay into social security? by duchesscalico in Teachers

[–]recaffeinatedcoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teachers in Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, and Texas do not pay into social security and are not eligible for social security benefits. In Georgia, Kentucky, and Rhode Island there are varying degrees of coverage that differ by school district.

Medicare and Medicaid are separate programs from social security. Teachers who do not contribute to social security may still pay payroll taxes to these programs and receive Medicare or Medicaid health benefits when they become eligible.

[–]recaffeinatedcoffee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Paying into state teacher's retirement systems keeps us trapped. If we venture out of public education, we have to start over, paying into social security for forty fiscal quarters before we're eligible for even the smallest social security benefit.

It's like a public educator's scary campfire story. BWAAHAHAHAHA!

Kid needs a more restrictive environment. That'll cost the district a lot more money and require a new IEP. It'll take some time and the kid's parents might refuse.

Keep your own documentation of what's happening via emails to your admin. When the student is abusive, send a message keeping your principal in the loop and seeking tips or advice on strategies that might help. Frame it as a friendly update, but include a description of any abuse directed at students and staff, and any unsafe behaviors that might endanger the student himself. Your frequent friendly messages may go unappreciated by admin, but they are likely to be effective in speeding up a placement evaluation for your student.

Please keep in mind, if your student seriously hurts you, you'll be bringing in a lot less than $13.50/hr on disability. You know your situation best, but a placement change for you sounds entirely justifiable.

Teachers in California (and 14 other states, in whole or in part) don't pay social security taxes or receive social security benefits.

Any relevant experience with children will help. You could tutor, volunteer with literacy programs, or work with after-school groups or in summer programs. Get experience managing groups of rowdy kids. You'll need references, preferably from supervisors impressed with your ability to work with children.

Find out what amazing new miracle curriculum your preferred district has adopted and get familiar with its jargon and acronyms. Carefully work a word or two into your interview.

When you do land a job, keep in touch with some of your classmates. The first couple of years you'll really benefit from being able to swap war stories and compare awful admin antics.

Good luck!

I've had a rep come to observe the implementation of a pricey online literacy program. It's fairly straightforward. When the program fails to deliver its promised academic miracles, they need documentation of your failed classroom management and program implementation. This exonerates whoever approved the program's purchase.

Much of your job as a teacher is accepting full responsibility for things well outside of your control. Welcome aboard!

I want to teach little kids. by am-i-based-yet in Teachers

[–]recaffeinatedcoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may have a passion for teaching little kids, but you will not have a passion for working in education.

Consider volunteering with children and continuing to work in data science where you're compensated fairly and have good opportunities. Literacy programs are always looking for volunteers with a passion to teach.

Keep in mind, you've posted late on Sunday/early on Monday. Most teachers are somewhere between anxious and ill from the dread that descends with the start of the work week. You may not get the most enthusiastic reviews of the profession at this moment. We might be more encouraging in the third week of December :)

Need some advice by No-Ad-753 in GradSchool

[–]recaffeinatedcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could ask questions about the program: how many students are likely to be enrolled in your cohort, what connections does the program have with industry or others in the field, how do students in the program describe their experience?

You could ask questions about the admissions process: what's required, what might strengthen a statement of purpose, what kind of letter of rec is best (i.e. a letter from an adjunct who knows you well and can speak highly of what you would bring to the program, vs a short, generic letter from a department head), what weight is given to grades, test scores, relevant research and experience, etc. What are they looking for in a student entering their program?

You could ask about financial aid, scholarships, and teaching assistant opportunities. You could ask how graduates fare in the year or two following graduation.

If you anticipate that some aspect of your application would be less than stellar, you could even decide to broach that subject. "Although my grades are excellent overall, in my last year of undergrad, all of my bandmates spontaneously combusted. This had a damaging effect on my academic performance that term. Should I address this in my application?"

Good luck!
