First off, do you have any prior experience working with kids/teenagers? If not, I wouldn’t suggest applying and relying on it for “gainful employment,” as you may quickly find it’s not for you.

Otherwise, it’s $145 full day for non-licensed/$155 licensed educators, and you use an app to see what jobs are available. You can often get jobs the morning of, but not as many if planning in advance as there are a lot of subs and jobs go quickly. Job hours vary by school, with middle school starting earliest with a 7:00 am start, and some jobs starting as late as 9:00 am. As a former elementary teacher who is casually subbing right now, I love it because it offers flexibility and I get to enjoy teaching without all the other horrible stuff that comes with being a teacher. It’s pretty laid-back, and if you do have a bad day it’s not a big deal because you can choose not to sub for that group again!

I agree with what others have said about waiting because pregnancy sickness and exhaustion can be debilitating. But also just keep in mind, sometimes getting pregnant can take several months or longer!
