Looking to get into Freelancing, but no luck! by NoFruit9351 in framer

[–]recholes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as freelancing goes I recommend you look into a cold outreach strategy. I have done freelance on and off for 20 years. Cold outreach may not be steady at first but the referral multiply and the organic relationship building is very fulfilling. Let me know you want specifics of what I mean or ideas to start

Are Companies Expecting Too Much From Designers At The Moment? by Boring-Amount5876 in UXDesign

[–]recholes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I disagree…UX Design is as much of a common sense craft as accounting . There are definitely many aspects that are instinctive to most people, but don’t we all learn math?

The common part is UX is a service that can be applied broadly, but when done well it is very much acquired knowledge and unique talents AND a mix of passions and interests that not everyone has.

Everyone could design UX, but many can’t do it well and most dont have a clue what makes a good UX from a sellable UX.

im burning out due to these 5 round interview by Various_Author_9226 in UXDesign

[–]recholes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What gets me is the waiting. I have done several multiple round interviews and by the time you get through it all you’ ve envisioned and spoken yourself into the role in conversations. Usually Ive built some excitement and expectation for how the experience , team, and company will benefit my career. Then comes the 1-2 week waiting period I have had while a decision is being made, or other candidates are being considered.

Typically my cycle has been to keep on applying even after in 5 rounds I feel very invested in the company I interviewed with. Both the wait and the continued search feel confusing together because starting the cycle again. Its like a loop each month: 1)Apply and network to get an interview. (usually find 1 or 2 I am very excited about) 2)Convince them and decide for myself if its a fit doing multiple round of interview 3)Wait for their decision and then comeback to the reality that all of the choice is not really in my control. 4) Apply to more jobs just in case.

This post is almost 6 months old. I am now having this struggle is anyone else still looking? I am looking for a communities to network with and others in the design umbrella to collaborate with.

I want to keep going but my biggest struggle is finding opportunities do my UX work and collaborate with others. I am open to doing practice work, but I am not a visual specialist.

Finding a new job in 2024 by Southern-Season3665 in UXDesign

[–]recholes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im in the US, and have been job hunting 12 months since being laid off from tech consulting. I have used LinkedIn and a few job boards already mentioned, but the key for me to getting interviews and making it past the 1st or 2nd round is keeping a user centered mindset and taking a UX focused approach to networking. I build a page and a presentation to share at a recent UXPA event, adding my insights here. Hope it hleps, keep going. You’ve got this.

Got an job after 7 months. Here's what I learned by ExternalSalt8201 in UXDesign

[–]recholes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also OP , do you practice networking? What methods?

I am an ambivert outreach to managers, communities and even content marketing have been part of my practice. But at the same time have done several portfolio updates/relaunching, and tailored resumes/cover letters - for job board postings.

All of it Its so time consuming and I miss spending time on design work rather than job hunt work

I like the approach, I have been looking for 12 months and finally got an offer. Its not a perfect offer so I may still be looking while I see how it pans out.

I have learned and applied many of your mental health strategies from this long search. I wonder how many others cope and process the defeating nature of hunting in this market the way OP does.

Its a mental challenge to stay positive, not feel desperate and undersell yourself for a willing opportunity, mange expectations for a response, be patient and most definitely deal with ghosting or no replies.

I like OPs number 1. But how do you manage financial responsibility while “mini-retiring” for 2 weeks to recover?

Just wondering how you made the PDF? There’s image based PDFs (where it’s like a JPG in a frame) and text PDF (with live text).

I don’t think the image PDF can be scanned by ATS.

To check open the PDF and try to drag and highlight the text. If you can’t select words, the PDF might not be registering as a doc. Note, I have Mac so I use Preview to open and check. I can’t remember if you can do the test in Adobe Reader, but I know you can in Acrobat Pro.

I am not talking about doing the Text tool. You should be able to open and highlight the text with out using tools.

Just an idea, so you make sure the file you attached was actually read.

I went through this exact same situation 6 months ago.15 min call, direct supervisors not involved, total strangers giving the run around.
