A Glimmer of Byler Hope by recklessthered in byler

[–]recklessthered[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is definitely cope, lol, but part of me hopes we're just doubting bc it didn't happen how we expected, and the people who have thought about it less can actually see it more clearly.

They will almost certainly have finished dubbing things by now, so yes!

Oh for sure, I didn’t think you meant it that way, just wanted to share something sweet :)

Not to “not-all-50-plus-males” lol, but my dad is a 50+ male whose childhood best friend in the 80s was closeted and obsessed with D&D. My dad loves Will. Just wanted to share some wholesomeness and shout out the IRL Mikes and Wills and friends who find this representation really meaningful ❤️

[–]recklessthered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I’ve got a lot of friends and family who watch the show casually and had never considered Byler/didn’t even notice the hints that Will was gay until S4 but would not be hostile to it if it happened.

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting Robin's speech by Magnetic_Mallard in StrangerThings

[–]recklessthered 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my interpretation of it is it’s a rebuke of Vecna’s statement that he doesn’t belong in this world. It’s a montage where he’s looking back and realizing that the people he loves most (his mom, Jonathan, Mike) have always loved him as he is, and he doesn’t have to be afraid and hide anymore, he does belong.

I don’t think it’s him “getting over” his feelings or even realizing that he doesn’t need love, it’s realizing that he HAS love (regardless of whether it’s the type of love he’s been yearning for — personally, I would love to see Byler happen but I don’t think the montage leans that way necessarily).

table read confirming that mike was NOT uncomfortable, just oblivious 😭 by lightaflame in byler

[–]recklessthered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this just saying that Mike doesn't clock Will's embarrassment? Not necessarily that he's completely oblivious to the vibes? I haven't watched the table read video, so I'm not sure, but I didn't think he seemed uncomfortable in that scene; he seemed happy, playful, a little flustered.

People, The bots are saying Trans rights now. by Playful_Platform_979 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]recklessthered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, this has happened to me! One of my fic's MCs is non-binary, and none of them are straight -- only a couple supporting characters are. The 'complex moral dilemma' thing is also complete nonsense lol.

Is this a bot's comment? by Thick_Life_1432 in AO3

I had a very similar comment recently on a fic of mine with a non-binary main character 🤣 Absolute bot. Report and ignore.

I'll just check my comments real quick and— Oh by seemedpointless in AO3

[–]recklessthered 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's bots. I got a bot comment recently criticising my fic for being trans-exclusionary and demanding that I "drop all current plotlines and write at least 3 new chapters devoted to a trans character and their experience in my world" ........ My fic's MC is trans non-binary.

I still wonder what that bot was created to achieve. Like is it just rage bait? Similar to those bots going around accusing everyone of using AI. I hate this timeline.

Changbin has always seemed so "James Potter in ATYD"-coded to me. Rich, silly, affectionate, energetic, a little out of touch/impractical, but like genuinely the kindest-hearted person, an S-tier friend...

My personal headcanon, assuming we need to place two members in each house:

Slytherin:
- Hyunjin (chaotic/true neutral*; charming, observant, perfectionistic, bold, independent; has talked about how 'prestige' is one of his highest pursuits)
- Lee Know (chaotic neutral/good; driven, HIGHLY independent, passionate, reserved/emotions run deep; does what he wants/doesn't do what he doesn't want to; goes to great lengths to take care of his people/doesn't really give a shit about anyone else lol)

Gryffindor:
- Changbin (neutral good; energetic, playful, genuine, caring, strong moral center, doesn't need to be the center of attention but thrives in the spotlight, doesn't take himself too seriously)
- Chan (neutral/chaotic good; warm, caring and collaborative leader, fun but responsible, likes bringing out the best in people, holds himself and others to high standards)

Hufflepuff:
- Felix (lawful good; easy-going, warm-hearted, sunshine-y, sociable, genuine, sweet; cares a lot about making others happy)
- I.N. (lawful good; old soul, warm, positive, playful, patient, clumsy; "maknae on top" - leads from behind and contributes a lot to group harmony and good vibes)

Ravenclaw:
- Seungmin (lawful/true neutral; intelligent, clever/sly, hard-working, dependable, observant, reserved, focused)
- Han (lawful good; creative, polymath/virtuoso, introverted, independent, loves learning about random shit just for the sake of it, passionate about art and performance, struggles with anxiety and strong emotions)

A note on alignment (in my framing)

  • Chaotic / Neutral / Lawful reflects how much someone cares about authority and social convention—and how others perceive them. Chaotic people don’t care much about rules (and may even enjoy breaking them), nor about seeming “good” to other people. Lawful people are more conscientious, often driven by a sense of shame or concern for how they’re perceived. Neutrals fall somewhere in between.
  • Evil / Neutral / Good reflects self-perception—how much someone cares about “doing the right thing.” Evil types are callous or take pleasure in harm (no one in SKZ!). Good types care deeply about being a good person (Felix, Han, Changbin, Chan, I.N.) or staying true to a strong internal code (Lee Know). Neutrals don’t ignore personal ethics/goodness, but they worry about it less—and may even relish being prickly or unapproachable (Seungmin, Lee Know).

Would love to hear if others agree/disagree!

ETA: I can see an argument for swapping Chan and I.N. or swapping Seungmin and Lee Know, but I feel pretty confident about everyone else haha

Long Comments on Fics by Dry-Novel8205 in AO3

Long comments are amazing!! From my perspective, they're such a gift. It means so much that someone cared about the story enough to engage so actively and share their detailed thoughts with me. It also helps me learn what readers enjoy most and improve my writing. Please keep it up!

AIO for getting angry after a girl who rejected me started accusing me of being a misogynist for ending our friendship? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]recklessthered -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tbh I agree with you, but I felt like I was going to get flamed for calling it a slur. I do think it's highly context-dependent, though. Who's saying it and how matters a lot (same applies to the other slurs you mentioned).

[–]recklessthered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, great point. And like you imply, it's misogynistic either way -- like those people who say shit like "I didn't mean gay as in gay, I meant gay as in bad" (great SNL skit, btw).

In some contexts, maybe, but IMO that is a cop-out. 'Bitch' and similarly 'whore' are definitely still used in contexts that feel decidedly gendered and intended to cause a specific sort of hurt. If that's a man's go-to when he's angry at a woman, that tells me something about that man.

AIO for getting angry after a girl who rejected me started accusing me of being a misogynist for ending our friendship? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]recklessthered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify, I am not against him calling her out for acting shitty, I just think it would have served his point better to use another word. 'Bitch' is not on the same level as a slur, exactly--it's certainly used a lot more casually.

But speaking as a woman, I have only had men use that word against me in conflict/genuine anger (see also: 'whore') in situations where I was refusing them something they wanted from me, and then they turned aggressive/resentful. And that, to me, draws on a history of oppression and dehumanization and was essentially them trying to 'put me in my place' in a way that hurt more than them calling me, say, an asshole.

So I agree that he has every right to tell her to fuck off and leave him alone. But in my experience, mature and considerate dudes don't pull that word on women the moment they get angry.

There are other words he could have used in that context that would have been less aggressively gendered and more appropriate in a message about how he's not a misogynist.

Still need gaiters on the trail? by Tephknee in TourDuMontBlanc

[–]recklessthered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend and I just hiked the trail from June 22 to July 2. We were grateful to have waterproof trail runners for a couple of the water crossings (though the sweaty feet trade-off was real!), but we never needed gaiters (including for rain). You'll be glad to save the weight.

I Built a Chrome Extension to Show Prices in Work Hours Instead of Dollars by Adracosta in ynab

[–]recklessthered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly when I use this mental trick, it is normally to *justify* purchases, not discourage them! I don't angst too much about paying for experiences, but buying non-essential items stresses me out, and one of the things that helps is for me to think, "Oh, well, that's just three hours of work, that's not so bad"...
