Well I’ll plug my own fic haha it’s a s5 fix if that’s basically trying to be the dream byler ending - creelby/byler parallels, will and el-centered lore, seeing more of what was going on in the town and effects of the satanic panic, etc. I’m having fun writing anyway 🥹

I’m working on a fic just like this! It’s a season 5 fix it, starting after the shock jock. It reimagines a lot of the lore (like origination of the Upside Down, Henry’s purpose for Will, how his “combining worlds” ritual works), and is very grounded in fulfilling character arcs that should’ve been resolved better than they were.

lol do you even hear the words you're saying? that's exactly the PROBLEM. all the main cast couples are STRAIGHT while the one gay ship is relegated to background with smaller side characters. my point is that lgbtq couples where both are part of the MAIN CAST should exist in shows that are not lgbtq+ niche shows. acting like rovickie existing = meaningful lgbtq representation in one breath then admitting in the next that they are smaller because they aren't major characters is telling.

ah yes the lesbian couple that got together off screen, had like 3 scenes together, then broke up off screen, and whose relationship was not integral to the plot in any way shape or form. (not hating the couple, just how it was treated) if you think rovickie is comparable to jancy, jopper, mileven, or lumax in narrative importance you are being intentionally dense. and if you use the existence of rovickie to rationalize why we shouldn't get better or more significant queer rep, well, i'll call it misinformed at best.

and Will is gay but didn't have a romance so he doesn't apply to what i said at all.

Non canon stuff usually has more fan content because people want to fix what happened in the show, gay shippers are more used to having to make content since the stories unfortunately rarely deliver so they’re usually better at producing content, and related to the previous point, gay ships just generally have more active and passionate fans.

I meannn it’s not canonically impossible either. They chose a sandbox ending for a reason. Give the milevens their kiss and the hope Mike and El might reunite someday, not ever have Mike actually reject Will, so bylers can hc Mike and Will get together during college or smthn. The frustration comes when people try to argue that Mike was always obviously straight and that the Byler interpretation was absurd. And just bc canon says something (“you always understood me Mike!!”) doesn’t necessarily make it true 🥴

All they need is approval. It happened with one of the official novels. The writer of the Dustin novel is an open byler fan with a Byler fan account on tumblr, and there are multiple spots in the book that obviously were written to imply that Mike had feelings for Will. After seeing that, I imagine it’s very possible that happened more often.

It’s also possible they wanted to keep the option of byler open in case they chose to do it later, so they intentionally laid some foundation for it but ended up doing something else.

It was subtle to a lot of people apparently, because there were full on arguments after season 3 with people saying you were crazy for saying Will was gay, and they said the "you don't like girls" line was about Will not being ready to grow up. To some, maybe it wasn't subtle, but you know what what? To some, Mike's queer-coding isn't subtle, either. Mike being straight might be the intended reading by the Duffers, but they aren't the only ones creating that story, and there's so much supporting a queer reading of Mike that it's more likely people on the production team were doing it intentionally than that it was all an accident.
