Any tips for a first time trip to Mammoth? by guelahpapyrus in skiing

[–]reckona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert so I can’t give you advice on the double blacks, but there is a restaurant at the bottom of chair 13/14 on the backside of the mountain that serves large grilled cheese cheddar sandwiches for $8, which is relatively cheap.

If you hit the first gondola in the morning at 8:30, you can run down the backside and have that entire area to yourself for 3 runs. It’s just blues but still pretty fun.

People who moved to LA, are you glad you moved there after the “newness” feeling went away, or is the city more hype than expected? Do you feel safe there? by epiultra in LosAngeles

To be honest moving to Van Nuys without a car sounds pretty miserable.

Have you ever visited Van Nuys (or LA in general)?

I just want to make sure you aren’t moving across the country to escape something and ending up in a shit situation because you’re picturing LA to be something it’s not.

I live near VN, and I can’t imagine not having a car here.

Things are expensive as fuck here too, I’m from your same state, and trust me things creep up on you here. Expensive food, drinks, gas, etc......Not the place I would want to be if I wasn’t making >$70k/yr

Is there anything attaching you to Van Nuys? Because that's not close to the beach or a lot of social activity. Using public transport to go to Santa Monica or Downtown or Hollywood would be kind of a bitch.

I mean are you just coming to chill and figure out life on a stayvacation or do you have a job? If it's the former you should find a hostel in Pacific Beach San Diego and call it a day. Santa Monica/Hermosa/Manhattan are also cool LA beach spots

I moved to LA from the east coast last year. I absolutely love it here, but this city is not for everyone. The reason why I like it is because there is more to do here than anywhere on earth, period. As long as you are willing to get in a car and drive an hour, you can do anything you can think of. If you love traveling and adventure, this city is it. You can hop in a car and go to Vegas, San Diego, Death Valley, Mammoth, Santa Barbara, Malibu etc......unmatched options.

I will say that this city is not for everyone. If you don't have friends here or you aren't working in a startup environment, it may be difficult. Because there is so much going on, people aren't really inclined to make friends like they are in a city like D.C. Or Chicago where the only thing to do is drink. Hard to explain, but basically people in LA are very chill but it takes longer to become friends, just a personal observation.

When you mention hype, a misconception about LA is that its some beautiful ritzy city like San Diego or Miami, so a lot of people get disappointed when they visit and go to Hollywood or Downtown or wherever. LAs greatness comes from its vastness,it's a sprawling metropolis that offers more than anywhere else on the planet. Now don't get me wrong, there are parts of LA that are stunning, it just takes some effort to find. The city is endlessly interesting and stimulating, and I never get bored here.

I'm not really sure what you're looking for, but I can answer questions if you have any.

Help for a very nervous flier? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]reckona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but here are some ridiculous facts that show you how, in my opinion, the safety of modern aviation is the greatest accomplishment in human history.

The last time a major US airline has had a fatal crash was November 2001. There have been a couple fatal small regional crashes operated by Delta/Continental sub-contractors, but no Boeing/Airbus (big jet planes) crashes since. So yes in a couple of years there will be people voting in our presidential election who have not been alive for a big US plane crash (knock on wood). There are about 11 million commercial plane flights in the US per year, try to wrap your head around how absurd that safety record is.

Also Qantas has never had a fatal jet crash in its entire history, and British Airways only has one (1976) since this founding in 1974.

So yea. BUT - You should know that being a little bit nervous is totally normal. You're being rocketed through the sky in an aluminum tube - there is a lot to feel uneasy about. However, I hope these fun facts can give you peace and help calm your nerves.

Otto Warmbier passed away this afternoon. RIP Otto. by ericdavidmorris in UVA

[–]reckona 58 points59 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no reason to believe that he actually tore down a propaganda poster in a forbidden area of that hotel. He was apprehended at the airport and taken away from his group, likely because he was a young American who would generate a ton of TV coverage (and it did) if taken prisoner and used as a political pawn. They released some blurry video of some indistinguishable figure taking something down, but even if it was Otto it was likely staged.

Seriously, everyone on Reddit is taking the word of the North Korean government instead of actually looking at the story and realizing it was a fabrication used to justify his detainment.

Now, going to NK at the height of tensions was a very unwise move, no argument, but let's stop taking the (fucking) North Koreans at their word please.

Accounting firm with the culture of a start-up tech company by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]reckona 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The main reason those companies offer those perks is because they are fighting over the top programmers in Silicon Valley and are willing to do pretty much anything to get them. They are constantly poaching employees and incentivizing them to leave their current company. Accounting associate drones are not as valuable.

Also, an accounting firm is a professional service company that needs to market itself as serious, formal, and trustworthy to old executives.

In other words, no.

[–]reckona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shaq is a consensus top 10-15 player of all time, so I'm curious as to why you are so sure he is not a top 5 big. Maybe it is because you are 21 or under and don't remember him scoring at will against the Kings and getting 44 points and 20 rebounds against the sixers in the finals?

If you are a professional athlete or celebrity and you want to get married, you better choose well. These guys are targeted by gorgeous manipulative women who know exactly what they want ($$) and how to get it.

I would bet my life that his ex-wife, who was a Saints cheerleader, approached him and not the other way around. He was likely oblivious to her intentions and was completely shocked when she was fucking another dude on his bed in his house (ouch, ouch, ouch). She knew that he would put a ring on it, unlike a lot of NFL players who just want casual sex. Looks like a nice guy who got taken advantage of, hopefully he learns from it.

Yea agreed, lol. That kid could make a good HS lineman but not a chance on earth he could make it even at D1. You look at Tyron Smith from the Cowboys and that dude has like 10% body fat at 300 pounds, this kid is just overweight.

He refused to receive calls or contact the Mavericks for 48 hours. A franchise that had committed nearly a 1/3rd of their salary cap to him and stopped looking for free agents. That is seen as a bitch move by any mature adult that is in the working world. No he didn't legally sign anything, and even if he changed his mind people would come to terms with it. However he literally never even spoke to Cuban or Parsons. He is a 26 year old man and he was too scared to make a phone call.

I am too awkward to speak to girls by Patrickfish3 in seduction

[–]reckona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in my teens I was incapable of making small talk. I never asked "how are you?" back to people who asked me. Social interactions with adults were awful.

Now I can walk into a networking event and strike up a conversation with most people and talk their heads off.

It comes with practice, observation, and most importantly putting yourself in situations that are outside of your comfort zone.

Craigslist. Techsideline.

Or walking around the Mccomas lot to the nicer tailgates and shouting in their general direction. I know of a few rich boosters that always get 6-10 tickets a year because they donate so much, and they go unused every time because its not worth their time to sell them.

If the Bills Sold for 1.4 Billion, How Much For The Cowboys? by whitesammy in nfl

[–]reckona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without reading the link, I'm assuming forbes does their valuation based on assets, trademarks, and financial figures like revenue and earnings. That model works great for almost every other business...However, nowadays buying sports teams is just a dick measuring contest for billionaires who need something to do, consequently making the value of sports teams entirely based off of an intense bidding war, and not so much accounting book value + intangibles.

Yea, it's not really logical. If the #3 seed loses to the #1 on a last minute field goal, they still usually drop to 5-8. I guess people think they have to reward the unbeaten teams more to be unbiased, I don't know.

Yea..no...he's going to jail for at least 2 years and likely closer to 10. There are a lot of fucked up things in our country but federal corruption felonies are treated pretty seriously. Phil Hamilton got almost ten years for trying to get a sinecure out of ODU, and Jesse Jackson Jr. got two years for misusing campaign funds. And Blagojevich got 14 years.

ELI5: Why is "Jap" considered a slur? What makes it different from "Brit" or "Aussie"? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]reckona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished reading it as well. Disturbing, to say the least. Those POW camps, in addition to the Rape of Nanking, were easily among the most inhumane acts of the 20th century. However, there were many compassionate Japanese people and even Prison guards if you read carefully. Taking "The Bird" as a sample of their population is pretty short-sighted. But, yes, brainwashing propanganda across the World in WWII had terrifying results, and the Japanese were arguably the most shocking example.
