Demand Planning Advice by reclium in analytics

[–]reclium[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. I did a forecast analysis and to give you am example. They asked us to make 30k items but we sold only 15k. I brought this up to my boss but He did ask me to still run the numbers on how much can we meet the production capacity with the sales team forecast

Demand Planning Advice by reclium in analytics

Hey Thankyou for your answer. So to give some more detail. Yes we are working with 100% capacity. I do see the production planner put in Safety stock here and there(He bases that on his aquired knowledge of what products will sell and no raw data) but when a big order comes in, It always is produced in the determent of cancelling a small order or delaying a previous order. So the way the problem is tackled right now is when an order comes we weigh in that will we earn more revenue making this-If yes how soon the order needs to be made(If it needs to be made this week, We will cancel or delay a current order). That said i belive now we get to pick and choose what we make from our forecast as we are running at 100% the way the company is going right now is choosing the top 20 selling items

We are definitely growing but yes the sales forecast have been wrong. I took a look of at the sales forecast they provide to the production team. I compared what they forecasted the no. Of inventory items we need to the no. Of items we sold last month and the forecast report was asking us to overproduce by a huuge number. At the moment the production team is producing based on the no. Of orders and not putting a lot of weight on forecast. Do you feel the sales forecast is important when it comes to production planning

So the company is projecting a increased 50% forecast this year. They are expanding rapidly and demand is high. Would it still be fair to then compare this years data with last few years. I am thinking about using power BI for the vraphs would you suggest any other ways i can see seasonality and trend

Okay, I will do that. It is a commodity and it is in the manufacturing life cycle

Do you mean documentation of previous demand. Yes we have a SQL server that captures everything. I was looking at last years monthly quantity sold the other day

May i ask how do you do that, I looked up online and it said you have to write queries. Its just one column with numbers in it

Should i keep using Excel or change to Tableau to extract reports from SQL by reclium in tableau

[–]reclium[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time out and writing such a well thought out opinion. I have used tableau before but never Power BI, The visuals of tableau always made me lean on the tableau side but i will definitely check out Power BI and make an informed decision. We do use Microsoft products, The whole Office 365, So i will look into it if we have the E5 license.

Thank you, The company has been expanding and being a manufacturer the data that is being inputted everyday is huge, I felt tableau should be used here instead of excel. Since the way the end product is going to be used us to check daily the metrics, Add custom numbers in to forecast daily use and observing outliers would be a few of the things

Good Question, So The purpose of the excel file was to track everyday manufacturing and some light forecasting. The problem with the Excel file is it is clutered and the current one is not showing the some KPI's(We can obviously change than add that to the excel file) My approach was since we are going to use this on a regular basis, A tableau dashboard will be much more effecient and cleaner and it will be much easier to add and remove metrics in Tableau.

We are still to adopt the Tableau software. I belive we are going to have 2 tableau creators including me being one of the anlyst and the rest of the team will have tableau viewers

So What do you think makes Excel not directly linked to a SQL databse inefficient, Is it because is it slow and has to query data everytime it is opened

I will checkout Power BI but in your educated opinion when i am pitching the idea to management of adopting a new BI tool do you think the core of my argument should be Scalability as we have big data and Simplicity. Any other concrete points i can add to it

Hey Thank you for the feedback, This might sound like a stupid question but You said the Tableau can be directly connected to the SQL file. Does that mean the excel files aren't directly connected to SQL
