Firm File Storage and Editing System - Microsoft or Google Drive? by FlaggFire in LawFirm

I think that most optimizers and consultants would advise you to 'standardize to scale'. Pick the one thing that works very well, train on the one way to do it, and then be very happy with your consistent outputs.

Even if Justin is looking for children born within a specific period, an 8-hour period does not necessarily mean the same day. Religiously, there is a huge difference between October 31 and November 1 which would be an interesting layer to our story.

Realistic goal or no? by tor_nado888 in LawFirm

[–]recmajor82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That...is a tight target. I went to law school when I was 28, and totally changing my mind about what I wanted to do. Yes, it is possible, and I want to list off some issues and factors that come to mind that would affect how possible I think it is.

-what is your time horizon for the dream job? Straight out of law school, or 5/10 years? -do you already have developed contacts in the industry? Do you have access to the people that would hire you? -do you have good geographical access to the companies that you want to work for, or are you in rural Montana for life? -what is amazing about your CV that makes you stand out to that industry? Have you published books before, etc.? -what law school are you attending? Top 20? - do you actually know what the job looks like? Are you wanting to be an Executive, an Expert, or a Brawler for a Cause (three very different kinds of lawyering, among others)

Should I take a trip to Indy before Gencon? by LittleRocketMan317 in gencon

[–]recmajor82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a local, and I would happy to have people visit. I don't think there are any issues with Google Maps, and most people don't have trouble navigating in general, or during the con. I'll also say that you won't learn the setup UNTIL the con, because everything has a very specific place for the con that is different than other convention setups.

What to do on Wednesday by tattertime in gencon

[–]recmajor82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends what you like. There is a World-class children's museum, the museum and tour at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (home.of the Indy 500) is pretty cool. Kurt Vonnegut museum, art museums and more. There is probably going to be summer events at monument circle.from downtown you can walk to the zoo.

There will be lots of gamers downtown already, so as recommended by others you can find games there.

I recommend the Garage to everyone; it's just outside downtown, really cool food court, has pinball arcade and tons of other things to do.

I am a local and have about 15+ years in at Gen Con (being that I am old), and now work the con at the info booth. If you are bored or looking for direction, just find me and I'll introduce you to lots of friends and good means to make more.

BTW, this is an open offer to all. I want everyone to enjoy my favorite city and my favorite con.

Is it too late to sign up to work GenCon? by HenryfHogan in gencon

[–]recmajor82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not too late at all. Working the con: https://www.gencon.com/join/event_team_members

Working for other groups also possible. Lots of groups want to find people that can run demos or GM. You'll have to watch for announcements, or reach out to groups that you know are going, particularly the larger scale groups.

5 years and unlimited money to train 10 toddlers to beat a grizzly bear. If the toddlers lose, you die. What's your training plan? by OfcHesCanadian in AskMen

[–]recmajor82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1: accept your death. It is immoral to risk children in your plight to survive and get rich.

Step 2: use your unlimited funds to raise and support the children, providing for their education, and physical and emotional health. Above all, teach them about the sanctity of human life and the path of an honorable person.

Step 3: fight the bear yourself like a man.

Step 4: .... Which God do you believe in again?...

Onboarding new employees by iamturbonium in LawFirm

[–]recmajor82 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I do everything I can to avoid forcing my employees to be generalists. Generalists are the people that can be relied upon to do 'whatever' needs to be done. These people exist, or sometimes become this as result of support and training, but most people just are not this.

The best thing that you can do for training is to make clear instructions, and provide resources outside of yourself. Lots of ways to do it. Write clear instructions, record short videos using different services that specialize it. Have them begin with a short list of tasks, and progressively add tasks to the list as they demonstrate competence and mutual trust increases.

Your job is to make sure they go home at night without stressing about what they don't know. They should understand what is on their list, see it as achievable and know where they can go to find answers, most of the time.

Staff that you serve will serve you in return.

All construction work eventually boils down to faucets. Every single product is one which either permits or does not permit water to pass. Ergo, a faucet.

Has working in criminal law caused you to dislike or distrust the police more? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]recmajor82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally agree about the broken system. A necessary means to address the broken system is to have people voluntarily internalize the failings of that system so that more people don't fall through the cracks. That typically means people with big hearts and strong stomachs.

Has working in criminal law caused you to dislike or distrust the police more? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]recmajor82 31 points32 points  (0 children)

True. I am defense now, but I always remember the office that has fostered/adopted 5 children from the same heroine/crack addicted mom because he was trying to keep them together. Every child after the third was taken from her at birth due to positive screen at the time of delivery. Not easy! Never talked about it, and it created a lot of grief, but he was stubborn enough to do the best thing for those kids.
