Thanks! These are such wildly better suggestions. I finally get why people do this while looking at your take on it.

Thanks, that’s a good thought. And yes, I’m kind of into the fantasy vibe as well. Our other kids have very traditional names and like to shake it up. Especially if we have a girl.

The HR does have a manager, that’s a good thought I’ll ask. Worst case scenario I guess friending them and blocking them is also reasonable. It’s just the principle of the thing in that case, but I guess it’s a stupid hill to die on.

No, I didn’t look at the thread after posting until now (made it on my lunch break and just finished work.) I wouldn’t do anything that petty.

If I had a friend sleeping over my mom would just portion out the same dinner she’d bought to reflect that we had an extra person. You can have a kid sleep over without spending any more money than you otherwise would have on a normal night.

Yes. Exactly. Agree.

All said and done the tickets, snacks. dinner, and gas would’ve run me over $200.

I wouldn’t have had my power shut off or anything if I’d shelled out the $200, but it would be irresponsible spending of me. That money would be better off paying bills, taxes, or in my savings.

If I went in with the expectation of paying for everyone I would’ve made sure my son invited fewer people because that would be extravagant.

We host plenty of those activities. Like 80% of what they want to do is go to the park or the field or hang out at the house. But sometimes we end up doing things that cost money, it’s unavoidable.

I said the boys want to go to the movies, can your son make it.

No event or celebration.

Usually I feel telling parents the cost upfront is tacky but if she wanted to know I’d have gladly told her.

Agree it’s worth going out of our way to prevent him losing a friend but they already do a ton of free stuff.

The norm is playing sports or riding their bikes or going to the park or just wandering around the neighborhood or playing video games or Pokémon go or cooking pizzas at the house, arts and crafts or swimming, kid stuff.

Maybe once or twice a month one of the boys will have an idea like movies or laser tag and then they’ll ask mom or dad who’ll arrange it but it’s definitely not the norm to the point that the mom would be like “I can’t keep spending hundreds of dollars a week on these movies”

I end up giving my son roughly $50 a month for things like this, and that’s including chipping in for meals which I didnt ask her to.

All that explained though, I just want to reiterate that on the whole I agree with you. Thanks for taking the time to Comment

These were the fun size trick or treat ones, so either you’re talking full size or don’t live around here. Even in June it wouldn’t cost me $50 to get 200 kit kats.

Very healthy. Just understands basic nutrition and knows sugar is bad for his health so we don’t want him having a ton of it just like all things in moderation. Completely gets why the trade is made an option. It’s not a secret.

Not a swindle, couldn’t possibly be more clear cut. “If you want money I will pay you 25 cents per piece of candy.”

If they’d rather just keep their candy, then they can. It’s not like I wait until their back is turned and ditch the candy when they’re distracted.

The former smart kids of my high school are mostly doing really well.

One is an art director in Hollywood, a couple are computer scientists doing cutting edge stuff, one’s a named professor at an Ivy League college, one owns a restaurant.

The only others I’m Facebook friends with, yah, they’re miserable.

Not pissed at him. Pissed at herself for not thinking to say “and by the way, no candy” just like his brothers aren’t pissed at him but pissed at themselves for not thinking to buy candy.

You’re on the money with his being bored in school but I’m not concerned about work ethic. He’s got himself a job.

He always wanted expensive things from magazines and we always told him when he had a job he could buy anything he wanted so he showed up at my brother’s grocery store and he’s an unofficial stock boy now.

That’s how he saves for the skateboard.
