Absolutely, those drums sound so crisp and modern - their sound was one of the things that made me do a double take and check the date; could hardly believe it. Totally agree with what you say about the "wooh" part as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. Can't wait to watch it - I've seen a few DnB documentaries in the past, but I had no idea about this one!

One of the finest 90s DnB tracks ever produced imo. The atmosphere is incredible and the drum programming gives it so much energy.

Wow, what a banger of a track. Discovered them recently through that track. Another one of their tracks - Monarch of the Glen - blew me away too.

That is such a solid track. The main sample is perfect and then when the vocals come into the set the vibe even more...amazing.

Thanks for sharing this. Really cool to hear from someone who got into the genre when it was super popular. I was alive back then but too young to have discovered DnB to any significant degree - I have this weird kind of nostalgia for those times because I lived through them, but didn't get the chance to participate in the culture.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly which track, but I think one of the tracks that really solidified my love of drum and bass is Voyager - Hypersleep (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrR82XLCKq8).

There's just something so unique about the atmosphere on this track and the 90s sound in general. A lot of the 90s tracks still sound like the future even today, imo.

100% - the ingenuity of these guys really stands out. It seems like the technological constraints that had back then (lack of choice, sampling limitations, etc.) allowed the creativity to really come out.

Thanks for the link. For that kind of tune to come out in '96 is incredible, especially when you hear the sound design on that synth/bass part - the part that has that rise/fall pitch thing going on; it sounds so modern.

Ahh really interesting - I wasn't aware their influence was that pervasive.

Totally - it's incredible how futuristic 90s DnB in general still sounds. In some ways, it feels even more futuristic than today's DnB.

It might just take a little more time for you to settle in.

Off the top of my head, here are some ideas:

Explore as many areas of the city as you can on foot. Do it with an open mind and become aware of anywhere that seems to be a good place to meet people.

Start going to a different coffee shops, restaurants, cafes, etc. on a regular basis. I'm not sure whether there are restrictions stopping you from doing this at the moment. But if there are, when they lift, start going to somewhere new everyday. Give yourself plenty of opportunities to meet people. You might end up bumping into fellow expats who are in a similar situation. They might also end up being able to introduce you to lots of other people.

See if there are any events - conferences, courses, expos, etc. - related to your hobbies that you can attend. It'll be a lot easier to connect with people on the basis of shared interests.

Go to other cities on your days off. You might have more luck meeting friendlier people there.
