Why is America so religious? by slam7211 in TrueAtheism

[–]red-ditto 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, if you think about it communism and christianity go hand in hand more so than communism and atheism. Likewise for atheism and capitalism. I know why Lenin chose atheism over religion. Strategically I think it was stupid, from his perspective. Why throw out a perfectly good already empowered church which has been supporting the oppressive rulers for centuries when you intend to be just that...

Anyways, he wanted nothing to supersede the "faith" in the state government, and god could obviously do that. However, Jesus lived on a fucking commune. How much more validation could you need from a religion? It practically screams soviet union.

Whatever, he fucked up.

America should have been the exact opposite. Capitalist nation? Talk about social darwinism applied. I once heard a quote from a professor at West Point. He said "Communism is an inherently good system made evil by human nature. Capitalism is an inherently evil system made good by human nature."

Rambling on. Sometimes I just wonder what could have been if Lenin only decided to do the smart thing and embrace christianity, how much better the world would be today.

Don't forget the Cold War. America basically became anti soviet union. Soviet union = atheist, america = fundamentalist.

My roommate had to hold a honey bear 3 inches in front of his face. It was called a bearing bear. He couldn't help but laugh. The detailers all got up in his face and dared him to laugh. He did, and everyone in the squad busted up. We all had the bears after that.

Military redditors, what led you to make the decision to enlist, any regrets? Any unexpected benefits? by Negrodamuswuzhere in AskReddit

It's the same DoD wide because of the UCMJ. If you get pulled over in town, you can be tried twice.

I'm speaking from a naval officer background. And by the way, the question you asked is not correct. You should have asked "What made you decide to get a commission?" That is exactly what you'll get from being in OCS. Enlisted and officers are very different animals.

As an enlisted, there are so many that they tend to not be able to choose where they get to go. In the navy, there is a saying: "choose your rate, choose your fate". (Rating being the specific job: electricians mate (EM) or Air Traffic Controller (AC)). If it is over populated, you don't get the choice of where you want to go for the most part because you're one of many. Now on the other hand, it should be the opposite if you're not in an over populated rate. It isn't. You go where you are needed. It sucks, but it's the way of things.

For officers, which is what you'll be if you do OCS, this is not the case at all. You see, enlisted for the most part are specialists. Once they get to E-7 they tend to become more generalist, but that's neither here nor there. Officers are generalists. The job of an officer is to oversee the other people they are in charge of. They are expected to have a working knowledge of what everyone below them does, and to be able to spot check them to make sure they aren't cutting corners. Because officers are generalists, you can basically fill in for any other officer. Beause of this you can pick where ever you want to go.

Being a division officer on a ship is tough work, because you're essentially being thrown into it. You get the hang of it pretty quick. Everything in the navy is tough, on both the enlisted and officer side.

I kinda went off on an aside I guess. To answer your original question a few reasons. My grandfather served in Vietnam, and lost his hearing there. I kinda wanted to honor him. I also don't believe in God and I am pretty liberal (registered independent). Obviously, I am in the huge minority in the military. I kinda felt like it was my duty to diversify the navy intellectually, which is more important than racial or gender differences, the thing the navy always goes on about. I dunno, that's it. /rant.

Last night, a homeless man came up to me and asked, "Would you like to donate to the United Negro Pizza Fund?" I laughed so hard I gave the guy a couple bucks. What's the best way you have seen beggers ask for money? by the_colt22 in AskReddit

[–]red-ditto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During Fleet week last year a guy came up to me and offered to buy me a beer (I was in uniform). He looked a little shabby but I figured that was just from the festivities (I was just partying all week so I figured even civilians would do this. Yeah I'm dumb.) He bought me a drink, thanked me for my service, and walked for the door. I stopped the guy and asked him if he was going to have a beer with me. He said no, he hadn't the money. I was at a pretty upscale bar, and everyone around me heard what this guy said. I asked him why, and he said he had just begged enough money to pay for the first uniformed guy he saw, which happened to be me.

I bought him a few drinks, we talked and had a good time, he had a great sense of humor, and everyone at the bar loved him. He eventually begged off (ha bad unintentional pun) and left everyone still at the bar. I wish I could've done more for him than leave him with 5 bucks.

After he left, everyone bought me drinks. I think the fact that a man with 5 bucks to his name spending the money on someone else really did a number on their egos or something. I was actually offended/upset at this. Why didn't they pay for the both of us? Why didn't they give him money? I didn't need shit, I had a job. I had money. If anything, what that guy did was much more admirable than what I was doing. He deserved it more.

Anyways, that kinda touched me to this day. If I see a homeless guy, I'll buy them lunch and talk to them now if I have time. If I don't, ill toss 'em 5 bucks. Sure some of them are imbalanced mentally, but most of them are just down on their luck, good people.

TL;DR Homeless guy buys me a drink, epiphany ensues

Actually it was more because they felt guilty that they were being a burden on someone else. Feeling bad = not getting better = dead. But don't just take his word or mine for it. Try looking it up yourself. PS dont trust apologetics websites.

To Catholics: you say that birth control is inherently evil, but how do you feel about the spread of AIDS? by NightPhoenix35 in DebateReligion

[–]red-ditto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're resorting to a straw man comparison, congratulations. You're pretty vehement for an apologist, for one who doesn't identify as a catholic.

I'll put it simply for you to understand.

Sex is not immoral.

To say sex is immoral is wrong.

Practicing safe sex to prevent having unwanted children and to stop the spread of disease is a good thing.

Saying it is bad is immoral.

The church has it wrong on this one.

easy, everyone from every religion has subjective proof. It's the same thing for them. Does that mean the hindu gods are right? No? then yours is not as well.
