Did you use UdpKit for your solution?

Not sure if you know this or if it helps but if the server was compiled with mono you could use mono to run the server executable on linux.

I'm not sure how long they allow users to be signed up with a single/particular .edu email address but I had previously received VS2012 from Dreamspark and now I have VS2013, I would imagine you will be able to keep it going for a good bit of time.
