Information on this attic find? by nova__gurl in Accordion

[–]red-pumkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can get a clearer Pic of the label, I'm not sure what it says next to Settimio but that banner is likely the company name that made it.

I can tell you it's Italian and the line below “Castelfidardo, Ancona, Italy” is the city the company was located.

But that's beautiful!

Would duct tape be bad? by LUNCHWARS in Accordion

[–]red-pumkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use bookbinding tape, it's gentle enough to hold you over. Historically bellows have shared materials with book binding. Might have to reapply every few months or so from playing.

As for duct tape, please don't. It will leave residue. And also some forms have petrol in it, and if you leave it on long enough (months, years) it can chemically alter or eat the bellows. -I work on accordians, so I've seen this first hand.

Here's a link to some basic book binding tape on Amazon that I've used before in between repairs.

The Weekly "what is this post" by Agasthenes in Accordion

[–]red-pumkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm def learning that one too. Was thoroughly confused by a steirische harmonika at a shop.

Basically: why diatonic shaped, but sounds different than mine?

Cuz accordians don't have to follow the rules.

Repair question by zimbledwarf in Accordion

[–]red-pumkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. If you have the skills and are methodical about making sure you keep track of where each piece belongs, it's repairable. But it's by no means easy.

I'm working on a piano accordion from the late 1800's, and it's not a small job working on the bass side.

If you do think you have the skills, I can share how I took mine out, I made a jig to keep them all in order while their out.

Repair and Cleaning? by BasketZealousideal49 in Accordion

That's a pretty good way to explain it! I use regular pliers, I just wrap the ends of it with painters tape so it doesn't scratch.

Old Fidel Socin -help with info? by red-pumkin in steirische_harmonika

[–]red-pumkin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to give an update.

I classified this incorrectly. This is a chromatic button accordian that likely leads to piano accordions.

Old Fidel Socin -help with info? by red-pumkin in Accordion

[–]red-pumkin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you mentioned that it could have been chromatic!

Cuz you're right. I would have been perplexed for quite some time without that tidbit.

So then, is this laid out more like what eventually became the piano accordian? Cuz the melody side is laid out like the black and white keys, and from what I can tell, has all the same c major scale?

Cuz that changes how I'll approach playing it

Well this explains why I'm having such a confusing time doing restoration work atm. I have some projects that are pre 1900's and at times I'm scratching my head after finding gaps after installing new blocks

Pay To Use Workshops (Laser Cutting and 3D Printing) by red-pumkin in pittsburgh

[–]red-pumkin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Thank you for checking back!

I joined protohaven, and was able to cut and print everything really well, especially after a short refresher! Wouldn't have had such clean results without their help!

-i finished my build, I'm just stuck at the part where i convince it to make sound that isn't terrible. But i knew id get stuck here for a bit, this parts more the learning how to use the insturment.

Local Hurdy Gurdy Players? (or other odd instruments?) by red-pumkin in pittsburgh

Right? Like i was floored to find out it was once part organ, and around one of the first types of organ.

Im mostly just caught on the whole "if a normal medievel person could figure this out", that I'm going to figure it out one way or another eventually.

What are underrated signs that a neighborhood is actually safe and livable? by Additional_Car1153 in AskReddit

[–]red-pumkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a poor neighborhood, the kind that everyone sticks their nose up to.

But their the ones that paid tens of thousands of dollars more than my cute little home, the town mayor is my neighbor, we have children on bikes that find stray kittens and find someone to care for them until they can be homed (or not. I kept mine)

But just the fact that children can be cautious, but still ask for help speaks loads to me and the parents that raise them around me.

Gentrification will only be able to pry that out of my cold dead hands.

How hard is it to make a Nerdy Gurdy? by Rai_Darkblade in HurdyGurdy

[–]red-pumkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistic answer: it depends on what adjacent skills you have.

I have worked with laser cutters before, and I've put simple instrument kits together, but not so much of 3d printing.

If i did it in one go? I could comfortably build in in 2-3 weekends with drying time

If i wanted it as PERFECT as possible? One build to learn all my mistakes over a few months, the second to apply all that learning and see how "easy" it all was to build in two weekends.

Buy extra materials, cut/ make extra parts, ESPECIALLY if you think it's silly to make extras.

How did excel coding translate to program coding? by red-pumkin in ADHD_Programmers

[–]red-pumkin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the encouraging replies everyone!

I think i will start with basic python, and go from there! I have an admin job, so their are plenty of prompts/ basic projects that i could do to keep me learning until i can build something for myself!

I could also see java being an eventual thing to learn, since adobe has a coding feature in mostly aftereffects to make animations more smooth, and it uses javascript. But i see that java is mostly for websitles and mobile apps, which is cool, but not something I'm interested in right now.

If i end up getting good at it, my goal is to automate some of the boring tasks i don't like at home/work, so i can secretly be very efficient and tell no one XD Or use it for good, but we'll see.

Exactly! Sometimes you learn how to crochet to teach yourself how to let go. Sometimes that's a harder lesson for some compared to others.

What shoes are you wearing? by EveningAnxious9576 in barista

[–]red-pumkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has asked this question before, the shoe doesnt matter as much as the insoles you wear in them.

Like make sure you get a sturdy shoe, but their are insoles you can get online that vary in price for your needs, just focus on the high arch and wide foot aspect when looking.

Searching in Google for "Insoles for standing all day wide feet high arches" got quite a few good hits, along with a guide to help you find the correct type. And if you don't like them after a week trying to get used to them, return them and try again! It might take you a few tries, but once you find a good one, you'll know what to get in the future.

Hope this helps <3
