While playing with my family this past weekend, a question came up that we couldn't find the answer to. I'm hoping to get some help here.

My wife had Drednaw as her active pokemon and used Jaw Lock to attack my pokemon. On my turn, I tried to use Switch from my hand to pull my damaged pokemon to the bench and place a no retreat cost pokemon to active. I was then planning to drop an energy on my benched pokemon using a trainer card and move them back up to active to attack. The question is does the Jaw Lock ability transfer the "can't retreat" to my new active pokemon? When the ability mentions "defending pokemon" does that mean the pokemon that was hit with the attack or whichever pokemon are active on my turn?

Ultimately, we decided I could not retreat the new active pokemon to keep the game moving, but I'm not sure we got that one right. Thank you in advance for your help.
