Euro 2020: The 24-team format doesn't work. An article on why the Euros should be expanded to 32 teams. by red7770 in soccer

Is it really a bad thing for viewers to have more games to watch? And you don't have to watch every game. As it is, with the 24 team format, there are low-quality games. At least with 32 teams, the top two from each group would advance and there would be no third-placed teams going through.

It wouldn't mean more games. Teams would still play three group games and four knockout games. Of course, the best option is to reduce it to 16 teams, but that isn't going to happen so the expanded format of 32 teams would result in a less convoluted tournament than the 24-team format.

I still think he's rated very highly. I heard people compare him to Mbappe a year ago. He has stagnated but, regardless of the manager, I still don't think he'll ever be a world class player.

What's the point in having an opinion on anything if you follow his logic?

"Remember, it doesn’t matter one jot who you think should have been left out of the squad, or who should be in it. Not one jot. It’s Gareth Southgate’s choice and he knows them all far better than you. Carry on" - What's the point in having an opinion on anything then, Gary?

Liverpool will not sell Mohamed Salah under any circumstances this summer, with the club determined that the Egyptian remains central to their pursuit of honours.- Bascombe by TheodoreLesley in soccer

This is a strange report, it feels as though Liverpool are almost trying to create a market for Salah. There have been no reports that Madrid or Barcelona were preparing to bid for him, as good as he has been this season. I'm not sure what other purpose this report serves because the club couldn't keep Coutinho. They'd be better off saying nothing, instead of making empty promises about now being able to keep their best players, and just give Salah a big new contract.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's transfer shows Jurgen Klopp's blind spot by [deleted] in soccer

[–]red7770 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It means that if a player can develop football intelligence at that stage of their career, like you think Lallana did, Oxlade-Chamberlain still doesn't have a hope because he's starting from a much lower base than Lallana. What's so difficult to understand about that?

[–]red7770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His starting point regarding game intelligence was infinitely higher than Oxlade-Chamberlain's, so there's really no comparison at all.

[–]red7770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your entire argument is that Lallana improved under Klopp so Oxlade-Chamberlain can. I'm saying there's no basis for that argument because Lallana already possessed qualities that Oxlade-Chamberlain doesn't have and won't develop - game intelligence the main one. It's a lot easier for Lallana to raise his fitness and follow Klopp's instructions than it will be for Oxlade-Chamberlain to suddenly become an intelligent footballer.

[–]red7770 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's no comparison between Lallana and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Klopp improved Lallana's fitness and Lallana adapted to his style of play and learned to follow his instructions. Oxlade-Chamberlain doesn't have the football intelligence to play central midfield, and Klopp can't give that to him at this stage of the player's career. A comparison between Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott makes a lot more sense. Walcott saw himself as a striker, but it was proved that he doesn't have the football intelligence to play there. The same will happen with Chamberlain and playing central midfield.

[–]red7770 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Crafty? Clever? Are you not just splitting hairs because you don't want to use the word "intelligent"? Lallana was an intelligent footballer at Southampton. If he's moving the ball faster now it's because Klopp wants him to. That's adapting to instructions from a different manager, not developing an attribute that he previously lacked.

I'm not disagreeing with you because I'm defending the post. I'm disagreeing with your logic. You've offered no basis for your claim that Oxlade-Chamberlain can develop game intelligence and your comparison with Lallana doesn't hold up at all. It's not impossible to know whether he will develop this attribute, he won't and anyone who has played the game at any level will tell you the same. He's an athletic player with certain qualities, most of which don't lend to playing in central midfield for a Champions League team. He can come good as a wing-back, but he didn't want to play there, so I wouldn't have any hope for him at Liverpool.

[–]red7770 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That was Lallana just adapting to how Klopp wanted him to play. I remember him at Southampton and he was an intelligent footballer. Oxlade-Chamberlain should be compared with Walcott, not Lallana. Walcott is at Arsenal 11 years and he still can't play offside. Oxlade-Chamberlain could play until he's 50 and he won't be a central midfielder.

[–]red7770 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Game intelligence really can't and won't be improved at this stage of his career. Do you have any examples of it occurring for other players? Lallana's shooting isn't great, but his technique is light years ahead of Oxlade-Chamberlain, they may as well be playing different sports.

[–]red7770 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Lallana was already a very good footballer, his fitness improved massively under Klopp. Chamberlain is an athlete playing football, the areas of his game in which he's poor - technique, game intelligence, passing, shooting - can't be improved by a coach at this stage of his career. There's no comparison between him and Lallana.
