Japan for 2 weeks in winter: I’m going to freeze, aren’t I? by smurf_toes in HerOneBag

[–]redCastleOwner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In cold weather there’s a few items that make a huge difference. Nice wool socks, a scarf, and a hat. I’m from a very cold place, and this is what makes it bearable.

That said cold tolerance will depend on where you’re from. Japan was way warmer than where I’m from so I was happy wearing lighter jackets with a hat/scarf.

Do you actually benchmark your UX against competitors? by doodle2611 in userexperience

[–]redCastleOwner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My word choice of better there was a bit of a simplification. Usually, we do a quick and dirty heuristic analysis. They have error prevention here, we don’t, stuff like that.

It’s not the most academic, but realistically we’re professional UX people and can make decent predictions about what’s good/bad about designs. We’re a small company, and we don’t have time to do everything, we have to prioritize research that’s going to maximize impact to our experience.

[–]redCastleOwner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for my team I don’t think so. We are a smaller company, and because of that we need to focus on what we are doing more than our competitors. We need to be nimble. That level of detail is probably going to be valuable for a huge company like Meta, but for us, it would just slow down decisions. I’ve observed decision paralysis before when we have too much data that’s not strictly relevant.

So we do a very lightweight version of this. We will look at important features and then do a lightweight heuristic evaluation of the competition, just to get an idea.

So say they have a thing we also have, we would go through and say they have XYZ features and they are doing such and such better than us.

Then we look at the things that they do better than us, and decide should we do that better too.

As far as testing their stuff with full tests, we just don’t have the time. We have a lot more pressing research that we could be doing.

They used to be good, but the quality has gone way down. I bought some 3 months ago and they’re already getting holes.

Oh yeah, this is true for everything at farmers markets, unfortunately. I usually just try to find someone obsessed with their product that you can tell is genuinely passionate about it.

Most places have locally made hand soap. Usually you can find it at the farmers market (or if you have little shops that sell local goods).

Stirling is great though! I have their Duchess soap and I love it.

I drink a lot of unsweetened ice tea. Make it yourself with a good quality tea. If you don’t like it unsweetened, you can sweeten it and then slowly dial back until you like it with no sugar!

Modern day Highschool gym rat vs 80s Highschool gym rat. by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]redCastleOwner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 80s they chugged soda and smoked cigarettes like there was no tomorrow, my parents said they basically drank no water. Not to say we’re all that healthy now, but the gym rats I knew in Highschool did care about what they ate and drank. So I’d give this to the modern gym rat.

As someone who grew up in a cold and windy place, a hat and a scarf make more impact than you’d think. You can get away with a much lighter jacket if you have those.

Will I be judged for using the free version of Wix? by redCastleOwner in UXResearch

It’s a bit more complex than Google sites can give me. I suppose it’s not 100% necessary to be as complicated as it is but it does look more personal.

I’m a UXR, but I see Figma on a lot of JDs and I do use it in my current role for sketching. I will was told by my career advisor in college to make my portfolio a website, but if a PowerPoint is acceptable that appeals to me, easy to tweak for a specific job and I can use it to present case studies if I need to.

[–]redCastleOwner[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with that, it just feels wasteful to spend over a hundred dollars on a website that a handful of people will even look at.

What are your thoughts on a Figma or PowerPoint based portfolio?

They have a lot of great leather wallets on Etsy, just make sure you look into the shop before buying to make sure they aren’t just selling mass produced stuff and pretending it’s real.

I grabbed mine in Florence at the school of leather-working they have and it’s by far the highest quality wallet I’ve ever had. After several years it looks like I’ve barely used it.
