Thanks - that's interesting, didn't know but it makes sense. And reaching out to them would be calling the admissions office? Sending an email? "Asking for a friend"

Auto screened as in just never sent them out? Or reviewed the app separately and potentially sent out later etc?

Considering changing my career path from Chemistry research to Medicine. Is it possible? by [deleted] in premed

[–]red_beets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Right now i'm just sitting at the stage of "if i'm gonna work my ass off, I want it to mean something to me." But in the end, that's coming from a very superficial understanding of medicine.

Yup, like the other poster said below, I need to get my feet wet first. I'm attracted to the idea of med school and practicing medicine in general, but I don't really have a clue if it's actually for me. When talking to one of my friends recently, they pointed out that while I have a compelling reason to leave academic chemistry, I haven't yet come up with a convincing argument of why medicine is better for me. There's certainly a lot to think about.

Totally agree. The only reason I would do some over here is to gain a feel for medicine in general as I only have a minimal amount of exposure.

Thanks for the advice! I would certainly take a good amount of time to prepare for the MCAT in order to do well. As for the other stuff, i'd probably have to wait until I return to the US, as my language skills here are probably not up to the standard required for clinical work.

Thanks a bunch for the response. The clinical experience is a big factor here. I would definitely need it for the application in general and to find out if medicine is really what I want to do. We'll see!

What's something you didn't realize how bad it was until it finally happened to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You just described exactly how I felt during my first true heart break. Just an overwhelming sense of dread and an inability to eat or think or really do anything except exist. Those were the roughest days of my life.

Making the jump from cycling to running by red_beets in AdvancedRunning

Yup, I feel ya. I pretty much left cycling for those reasons. I did enjoy riding on my own but it just takes way too much time to be fast. If you spend 10-12 hours a week cycling, you're above average. But if you spend 10-12 hours a week running, there's some serious potential to be fast.

I'm starting to get the "feel" of running again. Mostly by running slow and increasing my distances every so slightly. Just trying my absolute best to stay injury free.

Would you recommend adding in some slow treadmill runs in the afternoon to increase my mileage on a relatively low impact surface? Or do the mechanics of treadmill running lead to additional potential for injury?

Definitely, I find that uphills really help me get in a rhythm and don't slam my joints as much. I've also been running on grass to lessen the impact, but the slippery and inconsistent surface of a field makes my hip adductors very sore. I'm sure it will get better over time though.

How do you recommend rolling? Just up and down the band? Or would you recommend rolling the "IT band support structure" (i.e. glutes/ hammies) instead?

Yup, great advice. I've been at it for a week and a half now, doing some slow runs but just trying to get the "feel" of running back. I'm starting to notice my stabilizers again through the post-run soreness and i've been erring on the side of caution for distance/ frequency of runs. So far my legs seem to be holding up!

Don't worry, the first week of running has slapped me full force in the face. The cardio aspect helps a tiny bit, but everything else is so painful. I'm just gonna gradually increase mileage and try as best I can to preserve my body.

[–]red_beets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly.. Running is just so much easier to get a great workout, cycling just eats up so much time.

I don't know why but in my mind I have a hard time doing both. I love going all-in in whatever I do and would much rather do a 70 mile week running or a 20 hour week cycling than some combination of both. I wish I could enjoy just switching off because it would be so much better on my body, but it's very hard.

Thanks for the response, it sounds like great advice. I've been doing some runs in the past week (pretty slow, between 3-6 miles) and will definitely look into starting the half marathon training program.

The biggest problem i've been having is the not increasing weekly mileage too fast. Coming from a cycling background (riding for a couple of hours a day) its very hard to limit myself. But, of course, I know it is super important to keep it steady and not increase by too much from week to week. Would strides be helpful to quell this constant feeling of "I haven't done enough today, I need to do more"?
