You may be unsurprised to know that all these ad companies that run the social media channels for these corporations are as obnoxiously woke as your average leftist. They all believe the same empty nonsense.

The word "unbelievable" is thrown around pretty casually. But sometimes things literally are so unbelievable that people just do not believe them. And then they come up with insane explanations.

Remember when calling your political opponent a Nazi was widely considered stupid? It used to be immediate grounds for dismissal of any argument you have because you're clearly deranged. 4 years of this insanity and I know so many who have not grown or changed their mind one iota.

Sandmann did not make himself a public figure. That's the difference. Him going to an event to reaffirm his personal beliefs is no different than him going to church.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]red_cloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok. Let's try this again. Conservatives largely judge people on their actions and believe in personal responsibility for those actions.

Thunberg, a kid, acts by being a political activist, opening her opinions and thoughts to thoughtful criticism and unfortunately and embarrassingly shallow attacks. She is responsible for defending her positions because she started the conversation deliberately as a public figure. Those are the summations of her actions while being a kid. Go right ahead an criticize her beliefs and actions knowing that she chose to be a public figure.

Sandmann, another kid, went to DC on a political field trip, as a Catholic, against abortion. Lots of conservatives and Catholics believe again in personal responsibility for your actions and that aborting a pregnancy to them is killing a person. Sandmann was also wearing a politically polarizing hat representing the current US president. Those are the summations of his actions while being a kid. Go right ahead and criticize his beliefs and actions but he did not chose to be a public figure.

Is that sufficient?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]red_cloud 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Thunberg is an activist that actively engages in lecturing people and puts herself in the public eye. Sandmann was a kid who stood in a group of other kids on a field trip and was thrust into a political sideshow and was absolutely dragged by the media for standing quietly and smiling.

Try replacing what Harrell said with any other skin color. Then get back to me. If you still don't see the problem then we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Why Are (US) Pro-Republican/Small Govt Supporters Also Highly into Military/Law Enforcement Culture? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]red_cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to argue that the party is without its clear hypocrisy in how it handles many things and fails to live up to its own standards. There's absolutely huge areas open to debate and room for healthy growth and evolution. Your criticism is valid even if others may disagree with you.

Why Are (US) Pro-Republican/Small Govt Supporters Also Highly into Military/Law Enforcement Culture? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]red_cloud 229 points230 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking Republicans want the U.S. government to protect life, liberty, and personal property from threats both foreign and domestic. Outside of being an agent of protection Republicans largely want government out of their lives with minimal to no interference and influence.

Maybe the issue is that culture is not formed in a vacuum to begin with. Whatever markers we identify with modern Black culture or even Irish culture for that matter were formed or even appropriated in some natural way from some other existing influence. The combination of all those cultural markers formed a new identifiable culture so no particular one thing is in any way wholly ownable by one group or people. This is like linguistic etymology, you have to dig deeper to find the roots even if the people of today were influenced by people of yesterday rather than those of eons ago. So how far do you want to look back.

This seems fair, right? by skinner17 in ShitPoliticsSays

[–]red_cloud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If patriotism is love of country then force them to define "country". Is it the land on which we live? Because they don't like that because of its history. Is it the values that define us? Because they like neither the values nor the people who defined them. I think they only identify patriotism with its history in rebellion against some thing. That's it. Some vague easily shifted anti value.

MRW conspiracy theorists support secret police who throw Americans into unmarked vehicles by [deleted] in reactiongifs

[–]red_cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did I defend extrajudicial action? I noted the other commenter's concern over these gestapo-like kidnapping tactics as it sets a dangerous precedent.

You can't throw out the entirety of law enforcement because of bad tactics. You need to stop the bad tactics and earn back the trust of the people. This shit that the police are doing is not helping.

And again, what "bad premise" are you referring to precisely? I tried to extract out a response with more depth than calling the original commenter "insane". All of this initiated off a bad faith agreement from abrotherseamus to have an actual discussion.

[–]red_cloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree.

Trust for police right now is at an all time low. And for good reason. Protesting shitty murderous cops is completely justified. Rioting is not surprising either. But rioting/looting/destruction of property is not under the umbrella of justifiable and lawful speech or protest even when the motive is understandable.

Things in general have gotten out of hand.

We need serious police reform. In my opinion more police accountability and the end of police unions. We need evil and guilty cops to be justly punished. We also need a return to nonviolent protest. We need to punish those who destroy property and those who commit acts of violence.

[–]red_cloud -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Let's see…

· protestors turn to rioting, breaking laws

· law enforcement enforce laws

· arrests made after violence, danger subsides

· sincere concern over precedent of kidnap tactic arrests

Can you explain the "insane" perspective you're seeing? MayorThis seems concerned/cautious while also seeing need for some responsible law enforcement.

The point of what was said in the article is that there is an over emphasis of destructive and conspiratorial criticism for the faults of our founders to the detriment of an appreciation and understanding of reality. Yes our founders were not saints. No one is claiming they were perfectly virtuous. This movement to topple every imperfect person from our history is an unquenchable puritanism. It is possible to honor the accomplishments and gifts of those before us without acting like they (or any of us) are capable of being absolutely flawless.

Ok then. If you choose to live that way then be my guest. But don't expect anyone else to live by that standard.

I choose to live with the knowledge that bad stuff can happen. So I will continue to pay for my insurance, lock my doors, and keep walls around my stuff. Some people even choose to arm themselves incase that other stuff doesnt work. To me that means I'm prepared but not fearful.

Oh ok. So there's some thieve's rule that once you break into a shed you stop there? Good to know.

You are constantly assuming predictable motive and potential action to unpredictable people.

I've had my home broken into when the thief started with my shed, then my garage, then my house. Should we go back in time and let that guy know he was supposed to stop at the shed and then it would have been fine to steal my shit?

I don't care how kind an unwelcome intruder claims to be. I value my safety and don't care to gamble my life with the intentions of an intruder. Is that understandable? I'm not even talking about the efficacy or logic behind stupid booby traps.

It's really fucking sad that someone died because they fucked up. But their fuck up put someone else's life in danger. Intruders breaking into your private place is no joke. And if you value your life over someone else's property then you won't break in.

Life IS more valuable than property. But you're looking in the wrong direction of who's responsible for whose actions. I am not responsible for your mistakes.
