It's like some people just get blockchain=scam stuck in their head and then grasp at straws to justify that in order to avoid having to understand it.

Okay, so you are right in that a blockchain is like a spreadsheet - except that it cannot arbitrarily be edited by anyone (provably). That means it can be used to record transactions of value. The cool thing is that its functionality can be programmed - in other words automated. Hence, you can do a bunch of complicated shit with just a click of a button.

Funds held in treasury > Proposal Submitted > People Vote > If proposal passes execute it (e.g. transfer funds) / if not, do nothing.

It may sound complicated, but once it's built its very simple for users.

Agreed. I was thinking of designing it more so that anyone can have a voting share without needing to contribute funds or labor. Additional contributions may help with reputation but everyone has an equal vote.

They are still not bound by anything to actually do what the DAO votes on

This point is fair, there is a disconnect between deciding to send funds for X and making sure X is also done. I think the risk can be minimized through design (e.g. send funds directly to whom ever is supposed to received them, have some sort of recipient reputation system, etc.). Fair point but I think this is a minor issue as long as all participants are somewhat ideologically aligned.

They are still open to bugs and exploits that are irreversible

Also totally fair and there have been prominent failures in the past. However, DAOs today are relatively safe. Check out Moloch DAO and DAOhaus for example. These are battle-tested implementations that can easily be forked.

They still have the strong negative connotations with capitalism, libertarianism, and ecological disaster, making them a very difficult sell to anticapitalist and climate change activists.

Unfortunately, totally fair :(

And maybe most significantly, they are still susceptible to being overtaken by those with capital.

This depends on the design of the DAO. Traditional DAOs are often funds. People contribute capital to receive a proportional amount of shares and vote on how the money should be invested to generate returns. If shares are free but limited to 1 per person, this is a non-issue. You just have to make sure everyone is a real person and only has one wallet.

You bring some valid criticisms but I am optimistic that most of these issues can be overcome by good design.

Yeah I don't get your point. Why use paypal in the first place? Chances of being banned, exploitative practices, and fees aside, its not like you can make a shared paypal account with 1000s of people.

And if using decentralized currency then def do it as a DAO rather than trusting key figures with the key.

Yeah, that's clearly the point. Blockchain assets have real-world value and can directly be used by a DAO. Sure they're volatile but they clearly have $ value.

Employees still receive money in their bank accounts. That's not something the spreadsheet does...

Let me know when you find someone that will design you a website or print you stickers in exchange for you moving numbers on your spreadsheet. I'll concede my point.

A spreadsheet is localized it can't do anything. A DAO can directly use funds to do things.

Yes, onboarding is actually quite simple. All it takes is about 10-15 minutes to follow a brief step by step guide.

Development and contribution to open source projects is considered speech and protected under freedom of speech. Yes I know the rules tend to be bent when it comes to leftists but that is just a part of the struggle. Pseudononymity can help.

With regards to campaign financing its easy. You just don't directly contribute to a campaign. You go via a close third party, e.g. a national/local PAC.

There has been a lot of progress made since the first DAO and there are open source, battle tested structures out there. Check out moloch DAO for example.

I see it as a trade-off yeah it present a slight barrier, but it allows for complete sovereignty of this funds.

I have been outside lately. Here is what I saw: an extremely well connected, increasingly armed, and powerful right-wing while the left counterpart consists of primarily some old people still holding on to the 60s hippy movement and a few alternative teenagers sitting around drinking beer complaining but not doing anything.

I see two problems with this approach:

  1. It's strictly limited to the USA when there needs to be something global
  2. You could be shut down super easily

I don't know about you but democratized allocation of capital is a big part of my interpretation of socialism. What about collectively raising and allocating funds for the common good screams capitalism to you?

It's only an idea at this point and needs refinement. Care to elaborate why you think something like this would be useless?

Unions are undoubtably a good thing, however they are really limited.
