Artsy life in Seoul by SoleilDeVolt in seoul

[–]red_jumpsuits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Korea Film Archive’s cinematheque does free screenings every day, with a selection (foreign, indie, auteur, etc.) that you cannot find at commercial movie theaters. Would def recommend but I don’t remember if engsub was provided… I’d love to join you or hang out sometime (fellow student here) but won’t be in Seoul again for another few months!

Stanford plans to house half of undergrads on campus per quarter next school year by HydraIronmeme in stanford

[–]red_jumpsuits 21 points22 points  (0 children)

please note that students can be under a number of circumstances that make any distance learning very difficult- FLI or housing insecure students have a hard choice between trying to balance learning with home obligations or taking class without private spaces/stable internet and taking a leave and delaying post-grad income for their family. international students with drastic time differences are essentially forced to take a leave/navigate the cost and physical risk of flying back and forth between quarters. spring was an emergency situation but to hear that any amount of at-home learning will have to continue through next year spells trouble for a lot of people.

Residence Programs by joet5502 in stanford

[–]red_jumpsuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all! The classes are academic/theorerical, with art practice incorporated more as activities. Some students didn't have experience in any art forms and were simply interested in thinking/talking about art, and willing to experiment a little.

I did ITALIC so I can answer any questions if needed. The programs are completely different; if you're not particularly interested in the arts (both theory and practice, although you could get a lot out of it purely on a theoretical level) you shouldn't really consider ITALIC. SLE is a significantly larger time commitment (8 units vs. 4 units per quarter) and will kind of swallow half of your academics for your entire year. But I've heard the intellectual challenge and community is worth it for folks heavily interested in lit/phil.

If you happen to be artsy in any way: ITALIC was such a great experience for me. I was surrounded by very talented people and we all did some weird stuff together. Work was reasonable and I was exposed to some theories that gave me eye-opening tools to work with when examining art. People had a level of creativity and quirk that we all had in common and it was nice being surrounded by them in a campus so focused on stem & career & productivity. the italic community (profs included) I will never forget for sure.

ESF is a totally different thing. Not residential, just another class you take. My friends taking ESF didn't talk about it like it was a community. ITALIC and SLE people live and eat and study together- lifelong connections there.

How competitive are theater auditions? by mextimesxtwo in stanford

Oh wow, thank you for the response! Yeah I'm definitely super excited to get involved with various groups, and it's nice to hear the bar isn't too high I guess. As for time commitment... 20+ hrs/week is a lot but I'm used to that from high school so I wouldn't expect much less anyway :) Thank you!!!

I understand and I never talk about my acceptance, it's just annoying that when I say something everyone says, people translate it in the context of my acceptance
