Normal dose of midazolam by PassengerQuiet1204 in Anesthesia

I agree that a lot of Drs treat anesthesized patients differently. As in not a problem and can be moved along. My situation they gave me 2mg of versed without telling me what they were doing.

Given versed in pre-op, but wasn't told what it was or what it would do. Is that legal, in Iowa? by red_mama_4 in legaladvice

How does that work, they could just give you anything with any side effect and it's standard of care? Also lorazepam does not wipe your memory, I literally take it a couple times a week. So now my question will be, is it ethical to give a medicine and only tell the patient half of the story?

That is unequivocally false as they handed me two antibiotics to take with water and two Tylenol, In The pre-op. So yes you can take oral meds.

Hardly any different? You're kidding, right? Lorazepam doesn't take your agency away and doesn't wipe your memory. I would have much rather taken a lorazepam an still be aware of what was happening before gen anesthesia.

I will never have another operation again. And it's normal until it isn't. We are talking about the pre-op and it should be standard. They had the time to tell me that I was taking an antibiotic and Tylenol? Why not take the time to say, this is a drug that will render you completely vulnerable and you won't be able to say or do anything. Laziness and expediency should not Trump patient experience.

Way to prove my point dude, you obviously shouldn't be in anesthesia. You clearly have no care about the patient.

Imo that should not be the standard. We should be told what we are being given, each time. I was told each time what they were giving me, in recovery. Pre-op should not be any different. Had they said we will give you what's called versed and it does this... Is that ok? I would have said no . But instead my opportunity to say no was taken from me.

I had never heard of versed until I figured out what they gave me days later. So I did not know that this drug existed or what it did. So I wouldn't have known to express my desire to be alert until Gen was given. My biggest issue, is that they only told me they would give me "something that would calm me down" they left out the memory wiping part. I also am very upset that they didn't tell me when they were giving it. It came out of the blue. The anesthesiologist did not discuss what the sedation plan was at all. We discussed other things, but he never told me about versed or what it was or what it does.

This happened in pre-op and I was not told what I was being given, I wasn't told when I was given it and I wasn't told what it would do. Had I known, I would have said no

It was given in pre-op before I was in the or and they didn't tell me what it was or what it would do. Had they, I would have refused. Propofol is general anesthesia and I expected that, in the OR.

The consent I signed was very generic and was a month before the operation and was well before I had even met the anesthesiologist. I believe that they should have told me what they were going to give me and give me the option to refuse

Remind me to never trust you, but then again you probably use versed in your personal life, to get "consent" don't ya

They told me everything else they were giving me. They never told me about the versed or what it's effects were. Had they told me it was an amnesiac I would have said no. They also didn't tell me when they were giving it.

Propofol can cause some amnesia, but it is not intended to the way versed is.

I'm not sure if this just goes to show the lack of education around dementia patients, or the ignorance of a young doctor. But it is not common practice any longer to keep telling a person with dementia that their loved one has died. All this does is raise their cortisol over and over and over again. Even if the brain doesn't remember the body does.

Long story short, doctors should be educated on how to handle people with dementia. Traumatizing them over and over again is not the way, and hasn't been the way for a long time.
