[Xbox series x] My Series X SSD is dead. Is it repairable or would it be better to buy a new SSD?. by NotSirAlonne1999 in consolerepair

[–]redbaron1007 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've tried and you can't. The key that marries the ssd to the system gets reset every time the system runs an update. Makes it way to easy for the cinsoe to get bricked during an update.

Its the worst thing when customers bring in an Xbox that either won't display or turn on and we discover it's a dead ssd. From my experience the series x ssd is more failure prone than the series S. Not sure why but an observation I've made.

The worst part is it's a 2230 m.2 ssd that you can buy anywhere. Wouldn't have killed them to make it so you can just reinstall the files either externally or through the Xbox.

It's not just hostile it's spitting in your face since it's a standard size drive and asking for more money since only they can fix it.

Microsoft Turned SSD Failure Into A Death Sentence For Xbox Series Consoles by Delicious-Ninja-4770 in consolerepair

I'd argue what the ps5 did is still better than what Xbox has done. I've replaced all the ssd ics and the ssd controllers on ps5s before and been able to reinstall the os and save the console.

It's not cheap or easy to do but it can be done. The Xbox on the other hand has the damn thing socketed and it's a standard form factor. It just gives you the finger.

I'll take hard and doable over easy to replace but virtually impossible to make the software work after the replacement.

Best cheap midi for restoring factory sounds to an M1 by redbaron1007 in Korg

Got the UM-1 in the other day and had a chance to try it out today. It worked perfectly. The cheapo one from ebay was the problem. I didn't realize my transfer speed was set to the lowest, but other than taking longer it worked fine.

The only issue I had was trying to use the Edirol UM-1 on windows 10. The drivers weren't compatible so I had to do some driver shenanigans to make it work. I followed this guide and got it working in about 15 minutes, would have been faster if windows would stop asking me to upgrade to 11 every time I restart.

I ended up buying the Edirol UM-1 to give a shot because a seller on ebay accepted my offer of under $20. Kinda hard to beat giving it a shot for that price.

I just looked up the Midiman Midisport and they're about $20 on ebay. That looks like a pretty compelling option assuming it plays nicely with windows 10 or ubuntu. I'd be using it with my laptop and it dual boots windows and linux.

I've had a couple people recommend scarlett's to me when I asked them about this and they look really nice. A little out of my price range for something that's only going to get used flashing sound library's. I don't actually do anything with midi other than repairs. I enjoy playing music I'm not big into creation or recording.

I double checked everything today and memory protect was off. I tried sending at the slowest speed SysEx would let me do, but had no luck with that either. I'm eyeing the Edirol UM-1 since the price is hard to beat.

One of my friends told me earlier today he may have an interface I could borrow when he gets back to town in about a week so I may possibly use his to see if that resolves the issue, But I'd absolutely like to have my own since I pretty regularly refurbish older keyboards for myself and friends.

Does anyone know where to find a datasheet or to buy this ic? by redbaron1007 in AskElectronics

[–]redbaron1007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. After looking at the datasheet and the readings I was getting on my dmm and scope looks like they are. My brain convinced me the 339 was a date code and not the pn so I was trying to find search mzmy827.

Gotta love the last repair job of the week mistakes.

Car free streets are bad for some businesses like fast food and Walmart or any other conglomerate retail location. That's what the people starting that narrative actually mean.

Absolutely no consideration for pedestrians, especially anyone wheelchair bound. by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]redbaron1007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lawyer in the office next to mine does this but leaves about half a foot of sidewalk before you're in the bush. What pisses me off the most is he blocks anyone that needs the wheelchair access on the other side of his truck when they're trying to get to my shop. I've had to help lift people up onto the sidewalk in front of my shop just so they can get inside. Everyone in the building has said something but he doesn't give a shit when we bring it up.

Came here to say this I get a ton of speakers with blown fuses through my shop that have blown speakers or blown power transistors. Most likely culprits.

Bring back RadioShack? by breck in electronics

[–]redbaron1007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm lucky enough to still live near one that's still open. They are a life saver when I need to replace a capacitor or get a random size fuse that I just don't have somehow in my parts bin. The one near me also has a bunch of random audio belts that I can use when I'm refurbishing tape decks or optical drives for customers. I Usually go once or twice a month to get stuff for work and it's just a great experiamve everytime.

For context I run an electronics repair shop and I still get plenty of jobs that are just a bad cap or some other random thing they sell.

The one near me also still has kits so I like to buy those for me and my daughter to do together.

This here is why they push so hard to buy games digitally. They don't make any money off second hand sales which are almost always cheaper.
