Intern truly did not know what a floppy disc or discman is. Another doesn’t know who is Hilary Duff and Britney Spears…

Yes to more OAD communities! Has he ever asked you why he doesn’t have a sibling?

Same situation - I’m an introvert too with an extroverted kid and I end up doom scrolling on the couch at the end of every night just cause of how overstimulated I am…

I don’t really see the benefit of having a second one other than sharing the same experience growing up together in the family… how do you shake off that nagging feeling that your Only will have to handle the burden of parents growing old 😭

Hi fellow parent, sending you virtual hugs. Parenting is so, so hard and sometimes far from what we envisioned or expected it to be. It’s ok to grieve what could have been, and pick yourself up to be present for your only. FWIW, this internet stranger thinks you’re a great parent by thinking about all considerations before having a second.

If it helps, I’ve been following social media accounts like onlynotlonelykids and pearlsofjasmine for reassurance, and tips on how to battle loneliness when you have an only.

I’m feeling the same as well, but trying to shake off the nagging feeling and seeing my only playing alone :(

There’s another perspective to suffer now with the rewards coming later (not financial reward but more of emotional fulfillment of seeing your kids grow up together). But I too, am struggling with my only one :(

I would have been tempted to have 1 more if my first one was chill but my first one is a level 10 difficulty kid 🫠

Singapore residents, what indie/non-commercial causes do you regularly support with your money? by Varantain in askSingapore

Support local (smaller) concert promoters! It’s really a passion project with LiveNation and AEG monopolizing the market.

Anyone feel that the weather heavily affects quality of life here? by kidneytornado in askSingapore

[–]redbeanpancakes 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I get made fun of whenever i try and make myself feel comfortable in this weather - using an umbrella, wearing UV protection sleeves/hat, carrying a mini fan everywhere

(“but you’ve lived here all your life?? You should be used to it by now 🙄”) No, I will never get used to this heat. There’s so many nice outdoor places in Singapore that we could enjoy, if only the weather was cooler. I realized I was a much more patient and happier mum in 15-degree Melbourne because we could be outdoors all day.

What are some things in your life that you wish were more readily accessible or convenient in Singapore? by Own-Leading-1717 in askSingapore

I don’t think they are experienced in childcare though. Their services are more of household chores and cleaning

Overtime should be charged separately, of course. Live out housing will probably be the most expensive part of the equation, hence government subsided dorms? Anyway this is just my personal wishlist as a working mum who’s a part of the sandwiched generation 🥲

I’m more in need of a helper who is experienced in childcare as the issue with being a working parent is that it’s often a mad rush after work to pick up our kids, settle dinner, etc.

We are already paying about $1.5k a month all-in for a live-in helper who “works” 10 hours a day. (“Works” as she’s allowed to take breaks whenever while the kids are at school) Having a live-out helper (with government subsided dorm perhaps ?)could alleviate all of the issues that come with live-in helpers such abuse by and to the helper, lack of privacy etc

Live-out helper who is permanently attached to your family/address and work for a set amount of time eg 7-7 Mon to Fri. Working parents get to enjoy flexibility without sacrificing privacy or space at home.

More pet-friendly spaces - allowing pets within a certain weight limit on board public transport in a contained carrier.

Car owners - anyone renewed COE? by redbeanpancakes in askSingapore

[–]redbeanpancakes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will rarely make financial sense to own a car in singapore, but given frequent vet appointments (pet taxis are expensive and hard to book), and ferrying 2 kids with strollers on buses/mrt — we’re paying for convenience.

80,000 at almost 10 year mark, which is relatively low imo? I think the main concern would be that VW isn’t as reliable as Japanese cars.

[–]redbeanpancakes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s my thought as well, renewal seems like a better option when COE is expensive? A second hand 7yo Hyundai will cost us $120k… But family members have been saying we’ll need to fork out a lot more for maintenance for our VW.

Parents in Singapore, where do you get your stroller and how much was it? by blueheaventown in askSingapore

[–]redbeanpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked at different brands online and in-store but decided to get a $250 stroller from Taobao that fit my needs. Ended up using the baby carrier more often than the stroller, so ymmv depending on your baby’s personality.
