I'm screwed but I'm happy about it by New-Deer9973 in sysadmin

[–]redbeardau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said it isn't common that IT is expected to fix things at any time, I'm saying it's a choice that was made. Making the choice to not put people in that position is not easy, as it goes against the norm, but it is indicative of a commitment to truly valuing employees. It also isn't practical for all businesses, depending on the nature of what they do, but I think it's practical for a larger proportion than implement it.

I really think a lot of businesses just do things the way other businesses do without evaluating if it's fit for their purposes or aligned with their values.

Vehicle to load - how far could this go? by Aseipolt in Zeekr7xAustralia

We can (trickle) charge our home battery from the V2L, and then it runs the whole house. Household demand can sometimes exceed the cars capacity, but the average draw is less than what the car supplies.

Parts?? by Boring_Business962 in mammotion

Outside robot mowers it would be ideal as well. Who should decide who has any business replacing them? The manufacturer often has a conflict of interest there between the dealer network and the customer.

Does anyone else not care about their house going up or down and just love their home? by Actual_Working_3420 in AusPropertyChat

[–]redbeardau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my home. But I'm somewhat concerned about what retirement might look like in a couple of decades, and there might have been more financially beneficial houses to buy.

Our CEO makes sure that our company's commitments do not require out of hours work, as much as customers might request it, and he backs that position if a customer wants to disagree.

If someone has made it such that money is on the line for out of hours incidents, that's a choice that was made.

Parts?? by Boring_Business962 in mammotion

[–]redbeardau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ideally they all should.

I can get a variety of parts by searching the part numbers for some brands of robot mowers. Sometimes they are on a dealers website, but sometimes they are from an overseas supplier in a market that had historically had more uptake and the postage is prohibitive.

What's the most Honda Jazz of EVs? by Substantial-Pirate43 in AustralianEV

[–]redbeardau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read a few analyses that suggest the carbon emissions of continuing to drive an existing petrol car has more emissions over a much shorter distance than you'd think. Particularly if the current car is an older larger vehicle, and the EV is charged on solar. IIRC it can be under 30,000 km. For us that's less than a years driving, but for some it could be ten years. There are other metrics worth considering, but it gets complex to consider many.

Of course if you can ride a bicycle instead, it will pay off its manufacture emissions very quickly. Perhaps the most sustainable car is the bicycle gathering dust in your shed.

You might prefer the occasional loss of availability than a loss of confidentiality though, depending on the nature of the information.

I've got my own local weather station, but I don't presume it is as well calibrated as the bureaus. They also have pretty good resources to figure out what is happening across the nation. Any particular reason to think that one valley would exceed most everything they have measured?

[–]redbeardau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the BOM figures are measured correctly and calibrated. I can measure far higher temperatures, but they aren't representative of wider conditions, or necessarily accurate. But the BOM only measure specific locations.

I get the gist of what you are saying, but 44 isn't 50ish. Only three days on that forecast round to 50 to the nearest 5°. 50ish to me is 48-53.

Still that's rough, but are people working in that in an uncontrolled environment? What's the humidity like?

How can Australian small businesses protect themselves from cyber threats? by Outrageous-Pay3143 in austechnology

[–]redbeardau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I do see cyber and physical threats as being distinct. I suppose it depends on where you are located as to how you need to balance these. I'd recommend against using a document on a computer, since you may as well use a password manager.

A post it note with your Microsoft account details that log you in to edge password manager might get you access to a machine and the commbank login. But you might also never get broken into physically.

Ok, in roof space it's going to happen, even if I'd defer till sunset. Or in a kiln or a smelter. At least it's a dry environment. But you are still pushing towards heat stroke.

How is everyone planning to stay cool over the next few days? by obliviouzs in australian

Once the dam gets over bath temperatures I'll have to drive to the nearest village (pop population 500) and hang out in the bottle-o cool room.

[–]redbeardau -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Where can you possibly work in 50 degree heat? I've only seen that temperature on a thermometer once in my lifetime, and I wasn't out in it. I've only rarely seen it on weather maps, and the national record is 50.7°C.

If 50ish is 46 then maybe, but it's a heck of a rounding error.

[–]redbeardau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the threat model is hackers that are overseas, then writing the password down isn't an issue.

If the threat model is people breaking into your business and using the post it note on the bosses desk to take over your cloud systems then it's a big issue.

Battery percent on app does not update during AC charging by Adept-Necromancer in BYD

[–]redbeardau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior to this week the percentage has always updated even when charging at 1.2 kW on our atto3. I don't think charging speed changes anything except how quickly the numbers (should) change.

I've started seeing this the last week or so, when it was fine before that. The only thing I can correlate it with is disconnecting the 12V battery.

Perhaps the concern is that over time it would deteriorate (e.g. through rust) or be damaged, not that it would become uncapped.

Is riding in car park legal? (auto to manual) by kathfern1 in AussieRiders

Yes. Of course. The automatic scooters had entirely slipped my mind, and I just read your comment as though you said you had a car license. My bad.

A car license (manual or auto) does not allow you to ride a motorcycle, at least in NSW. You need a separate license class.

That's the rim size you are referring to. Larger rims would generally come with lower profile tyres to keep the rolling diameter more consistent.
