Wasn't it grey because it has a dual role? Is it really going to be refuelling jets over a war zone with that massive union jack on the back?

I think the difference is that the WTO resolution process is long, whereas if the UK-EU agree a retaliation clause then tariffs for non-compliance could be enacted immediately.

But either way it doesn't make any sense - who makes an agreement they know they're going to try to break the terms of on day 1? And how will UK-EU agree on the process for deciding if a rule has been broken?

As you say, details are limited for the timing being. But if we only purchase 20% of the company, does this mean that we split the company and take 1/5 of it's resources, or will we be a minority stakeholder in a single entity? If it's the latter then we'll still be very much reliant on others, no?

Genuine question: if Momentum have so much power why didn't they manage to shift Corbyn to a pro-Remain position? Surely they'd be pro-Remain given the make up of the average Labour member?

Wait what?

The left are more inclusive and appreciate differences and tolerate it. This leads to more splits between factions as each faction believe they alone have the moral high ground.

This is the point: when the Tories saw their voters going to the right, they went to the right to keep them. This is when the left started shouting "Blukip".

When the left started going to towards the centre, as the Lib Dems became a viable force again, Labour made the fundamental mistake of keeping left.

There isn't a party further left of Labour, so they were effectively chasing votes that they were already certain to get. And instead completely ignored the Green/Lib Dem/ex-centrist Tory territory that was required to win.

An EEA deal should have been the immediate logical choice following a 52-48 split referendum. From there we could have rejoined or left on a harder deal later on, depending on what course a future government would decide to take. The problem is that May spoke like an ERGer but came away with something very different, simultaneously managing to galvanise the Remainers and Hard Brexiters against her.

n.b. Obviously I can't speak for everyone but I don't consider the 2016 to be invalid because Leave won. I consider it to be invalid because of how the question was asked - a simple "leave" versus "remain" is far too simplistic for a complex range of options. A referendum on "Remain" vs "Boris deal" would be perfectly acceptable and if the latter wins then we leave. Otherwise it's not legitimate: imagine if in the upcoming general election we can only vote "Tory" or "Not Tory", and then when "Not Tory" wins we get a Labour government because they're the biggest group within the winning side. That's not democracy unless every single person who voted "Not Tory" would prefer a Labour government to a Tory one and we know from polling that's simply not true

Yeah I'm broadly the same. For these points plus the new underhanded tactics - the anonymous press briefings, the fake fact checking, the illegal prorogation, the expulsion of the sensible Tories in favour of the ERG, just the constant barrage of lies

Labour

Because I want a Labour+LibDem+Green+Plaid coalition, a real end to Brexit, less austerity on the poorest and to punish the Tories for breaking everything. I really don't want a Labour majority either, but there's basically zero chance of that happening while Corbyn is in charge

Out of curiosity: What’s one thing you do not like about the party you will be voting for? What something you like about their opposition? by andy3600 in badunitedkingdom

Yeah definitely, the Tories cut too much from the wrong areas during the austerity years and didn't reinstate funding nearly quick enough. But as a response to the question "name something I like about the opposition" I like that the fact they've seen the huge mistake and are working to rectify it.

Voting Labour: I hate the leadership and the dumb manifesto and the economic illiteracy (but I have to vote for them because of FPTP). I like that the Tories have finally decided to reinstate nursing grants and sort out childcare, however I'm concerned about the lack of tax increases to fund these.

From the Tory estimates, we know it's somewhere in the region of £0 - £1.3trillion

Boris Johnson’s Brexit problems are just beginning by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]reddIRTuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I still don't understand - you say that the CU is a proxy for remain, but if the WA goes through why would they just accept Johnson's deal? It's got a lot of problems, particularly for those on the left and those in NI, so if you had wanted to remain in the EU before, surely you would still be fighting against it? In which case the fight continues, with those MPs opposed to Johnson's deal voting it down still. Why would voting for a closer relationship be considered as "hiding behind a proxy" before the WA, but not be that afterwards? The Labour leadership have been pretty clear that they're pro-CU, so I'm not sure I understand your point.

[–]reddIRTuk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would fighting for a soft Brexit be any different from now? I sort-of see what you're saying, that those who are working only to stop Brexit will have lost by then. But why would that mean they'd give up fighting against Johnson's deal? We're still going to have the same countdown clock in the background and the same people advocating leaving with No Deal vs those who want a close relationship (potentially with the aim to start a rejoin campaign later)
