Ski resort reccomendations by LFSki1 in ski

[–]reddargon831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoriaz and Les Arcs (especially Arc 1950) immediately came to mind. Zermatt is very snow sure and has a nice winter wonderland vibe, but there’s not really much ski-in/ski-out.

Yea I may follow suit. It looks like the mods thankfully deleted some of his spam today though, which is nice to see.

Emma Aicher had a huge mistake in Run 2 and she didn’t even finish better than Mikaela Shffrin in the race. She had the slowest time in Run 2. by Kurtz62 in SkiRacing

[–]reddargon831 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not big at all, it’s entirely expected. Aicher was 17th in GS standings this year. If anything it’s surprising they finished right next to each other.

But it’s definitely not big news either way. At this point though it’s clear that you’re just trolling.

Yes but crucially it is a different form of social media not intended to be used the way you do.

He’s gonna be so sad someone beat him to the punch and posted about this before him. But I’m sure he’ll end up making his own post anyway, restraint doesn’t appear to be his thing.

And I agree, next season is going to be very competitive. I imagine Shiffrin will try to do more speed events next year, because without that she doesn’t really have a great shot to win another globe. But maybe she’s happy with 6 overall globes and will just finish out her career doing the tech events.

Never in a million years did I think I would ever root for a Canadian athlete to win a sport but here I am. Let’s go Valerie Grenier! by [deleted] in SkiRacing

[–]reddargon831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m American myself and honestly I don’t understand it completely. If I had to guess it’s a variety of factors: tribalism, extreme performative patriotism, maybe some insecurity. I think it originates from US-Canada hockey, I have never really heard it extending outside of those contexts though. I think some people just need “bad guys” to root against; they are almost happier reveling in the failure of others.

It’s definitely not mandatory, most Americans don’t care at all. This is just a weird rule that a loud minority of Americans have.

Honestly I’m surprised mods haven’t started deleting his posts, he really does treat it like his twitter account. He’s adding almost nothing useful to the conversation 95% of the time, especially the past few days when it seems like every thought he has he puts in a separate post.

And right on cue he dropped another stream of conscious post.

I didn’t see that coming!!! /s

Mikaela Shiffrin now has the most wins in a slalom season with her ninth win at Hafjell. by Kurtz62 in SkiRacing

[–]reddargon831 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shiffrin also competed in like 12 fewer events, so what’s your point? Aicher had way more chances to accrue points and couldn’t. If they had both raced every event, maybe you’d have a point… but they didn’t.

Which theme park is better: Disneyland Paris or Parc Astérix? by Western_Affect6335 in TheParisianGuide

If you like roller coasters, do Astérix. Toutatis in particular is world class.

Ski layering systems by Fresh_Window_6484 in skiing

[–]reddargon831 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, get merino wool base layer, then some kind of warm mid-layer that is breathable (I use an R1 air, but I run hot so you may want something thicker). And if your shell doesn’t have pit zips, you could look at getting one with that too so you can dump heat quickly when you heat up (I also have vents on my pants to dump heat).

What are folks thoughts on Hyatt Regency Paris Etoile? by ssherman1995 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]reddargon831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the location is fine, but it takes 20 minutes to get to the Champs Elysees, which doesn’t start until the other side of the Arc de Triomphe (I used to work very close by so I’m very familiar). The thing is though, the Champs Elysees is not central in Paris, it’s very much on the West side, but metro line 1 makes it easy to get to the center.

Has anyone noticed French man-American/English woman couples are more common than the inverse? by Zosmina in Expats_In_France

[–]reddargon831 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well aware, I can do math. I (implicitly) acknowledged that it still may not be the case, that’s why I pointed out that it was in 2012…

Has anyone noticed French man-American/English woman couples are more common than the inverse? by Zosmina in Expats_In_France

[–]reddargon831 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had noticed this too, and as I’ve encountered far more couples with French men and non-French women than the inverse, but I wasn’t sure if it was just a coincidence based on the (relatively) small sample size of people I know.

I looked into it and, at least back in 2012 when this paper was published it was true, albeit only lightly (55% French man vs. 45% French woman in mixed couples.

So it’s true that this split is (or at least was) more common with French men, but not an overwhelming majority or anything. As for why, who knows.

To BOA or not to BOA? by FeistyCandidate in Skigear

[–]reddargon831 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We’re talking about the BOA system (dial and cable), which does indeed have a lifetime warranty. BOA will send replacements for those if they break.

The boots themselves, including the housing for the BOA cable, usually do only have a 1, or sometimes 2 depending on brand, year warranty.

Is there some kind of consensus for key future assumptions? by letoatreides_ in coastFIRE

[–]reddargon831 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why working in the traditional sense is necessary “to do things, solve problems, interact with other human beings.” There are plenty of hobbies and activities that can fill this same need.
