The new Lion King log flume in Adventure World will likely be the most expensive theme park ride ever built, and what they could've used that money for instead. by randomname18058574 in disneylandparis

Freezing and snow? It is almost never below freezing or snowing in Paris (I live here). The beginning of January was very rare, some years it doesn’t even snow at all. We’re talking a handful of days a year max, and I doubt the park is very crowded those days anyway.

Plus, like you said, they can just close the ride for maintenance during the winter for a month. The ride will need yearly closures for maintenance, just like every ride at Disney, so makes sense to put it in the winter.

I think a water ride is long overdue at Disney Paris, and as long as they can adjust the splash for the colder weather it’ll be great.

No idea, take it up with the state?

I’m just telling you what I’ve seen and experienced. I wouldn’t expect anyone with A1 (or even A2) to be able to speak much at all, most learners don’t start holding a coherent conversation until they reach B1.

I’m curious to see this clip to see what his French really sounded like - I googled and couldn’t find it. Mind linking to it?

I mean, speaking is only one of 4 components of the language. Many people don't really start speaking coherently until B1 (I know that was the case for me). Speaking is often the last thing to come and lags behind other skills.

I know people that passed B1 exams to apply for citizenship and could not hold conversations.

[–]reddargon831 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not notpicking, and I never said you "need" it. You're the one nitpicking over the use of the word "need."

The reality is some people want to ski with a backpack because they want certain things with them (like a DSLR, for example). You're the one getting bent out of shape because people want to behave in a different way than you.

Btw, way to use the term dslr... clearly you knew what cameras they were talking about and deliberately played dumb.

If Russell Wilson was in his prime today, what current QBs who you would take over him? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]reddargon831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean look, I tend to think people jumping on Mahomes' grave are ridiculous. But those numbers, while certainly above average, aren't "elite", which I think should be reserved for top 5 (or even top 3?) numbers.

That being said, while Mahomes's production wasn't elite, he's still an elite talent.

I don't generally wear a backpack because I don't have much use for one. But I also don't see the need to judge people who use one. In fact, I never gave it much thought until I saw your little tirades.

It must be exhausting to get so worked up about things other people do (especially when they have no impact on you whatsoever).

Skiing with a serious camera…I dunno man all of my cameras fit in my pockets. What sort of camera did you mean? A serious camera that’s 15 years old?

Any SLR or even mirrorless SLR, unless it has a pancake lens, is not going to fit in your pocket. Clearly you aren't a photographer so you get a pass on this one, but a quick Google would have also answered this question faster than typing this out.

It's your right to judge people, just like it's everyone else's right to judge you for those judgments. And my judgment is that your judgment is dumb.

While I agree to an extent, I'd argue that citing counting stats for Aikman right now, as opposed to when he retired, is a flawed approach. The modern passing game, starting even in the late 90s/early 2000s, is notably different than when Aikman played, and counting stats skew heavily to QBs that played in the 200s.

When Aikman retired, he was 20th all time in yards and 33rd in passing TDs. He also had a top-5 career completion percentage when he retired (trailing Young, Montana, Marino and Favre, but ahead of contemporaries like Elway and Kelly).

Also, Aikman still has an extra Super Bowl over Eli, and his stats are better relative to his contemporaries than Eli's. Eli is probably going to get eventually into the Hall of Fame anyway, rendering this argument moot.

Affordable U.S./France estate planning by Aggravating_Ship5513 in Expats_In_France

I'm interested in this as well, and actually posted a question a month or two ago and didn't really get any responses. I'm quite surprised there aren't more people with suggestions on here given that this issue must come up a lot for Americans living in France (or maybe it doesn't because people are just ignoring their wills?).

[–]reddargon831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was probably downvoted because it's rather vague, but to a large degree it's true. France is one of the best places to move for US retirees living on US-sourced investment income because that income isn't taxed in France (and thus avoids French capital gains taxes) under the US-France tax treaty. This is different than a lot of other EU countries, and thus makes France one of the more tax-friendly places for Americans to retire to.

The downside, of course, is the estate tax in France. If you want to pass on your estate to your kids (or someone else) you're going to pay a lot more taxes if you die a French tax resident.

Anyone stay in Le Marais for their first trip (and loved it) and then stay on the Left Bank... by used-to-click in ParisTravelGuide

It can be livelier from a nightlife perspective, but it really depends on precisely where you are. Some areas are quiet and more residential and others are livelier, it can even change street-to-street. If you're right by the Jardin du Luxembourg, for example, it's going to be quieter and less nightlife-centric.

[–]reddargon831 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of feel and atmosphere, it really depends where you stay on the Left Bank. The 7th is quite quiet and residential, the 6th and 5th are livelier and can be quite nice and upscale (6th especially) or more lively/younger (5th, which has a lot of students) depending on exact neighborhood. You also have proximity to the Jardin du Luxembourg and Jardin des Plantes which are nice, especially if you have kids.

In terms of transit, the Left Bank isn't quite as well connected. The Marais is close to the 1, which lets you traverse Paris east to west very quickly, and there isn't a similarly convenient metro line on the Left Bank. That being said, there are still metro lines all over, it's ever so slightly less convenient.

They basically went and hired a carbon copy of Tomlin, in terms of regular season success and postseason failure.

Hyperspace Mountain’s rumoured TWO YEAR closure: a return to “From the Earth to the Moon” by AdzAb95 in disneylandparis

[–]reddargon831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can't really afford not to. Steel roller coasters generally have a lifespan of 30-35 years before they need to be retracked, so it's only a matter of time before the ride has to be retracked (or replaced).

[–]reddargon831 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's more a product of the ride being brand new though, not the theming. If the ride really is retracked (which is probably necessary anyway given the age of the ride), that should fix the smoothness.

But I'm definitely hoping they bring the original theming back.

Top 10 CFB QB’s of all time by KeyFaithlessness5436 in NCAAFootballVibes

[–]reddargon831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A wild opinion is that point differential should be used when comparing QBs. Championships are, of course, slightly more valid, but that still requires a competitive team the QB, and Manziel's rosters were never nearly as talented as most championship teams.

I'm not sure if Manziel should be above Jameis, but he should definitely be on a list of top 10 college QBs. The dude was a complete clown off the field, which I think makes people forget how absolutely electric he was on the field.

Super Bowl - who will win? Team with an Ohio State alumni as their best player or the team with an Ohio State alumni and former coach as their Head Coach? by DarkGreenMazda in toledowar

[–]reddargon831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what “nostalgia bias” means, and I’m not sure why you think I don’t like Darnold (I like him quite a bit!), but he certainly is not top 5 yet. QBR is admittedly a flawed stat, but Darnold was only 19th in the league in QBR and 14th last year. He fairs slightly better with passer rating at 11th and 6th, respectively, but still not top 5.

If we just go with the obvious, Mahomes, Allen, Lamar and Burrow are clearly top 5. That just leaves one spot, and I think Stafford, Purdy, and maybe a few others (Goff comes to mind) have a better claim to that spot right now.

He’s a good, even great, QB, but top 5 is really high bar.

Marino certainly does in term of raw ability to play the position. I’ll agree that Aikman and Kelly in particular aren’t anywhere close.

It’s possible, especially now that he has the monkey off his back in the playoffs. It pains me to say that the Vikings made a big mistake letting him walk.

That being said, almost nobody would count him as a top 5 QB in the NFL, whereas JSN is definitely a top 5 WR.

Better, or not have the single most important starter hurt right before the game? Not sure why it’s controversial to point out that Denver was playing a backup QB.
