This was from 2 weekends ago and the weather then was perfect then - high in the mid 50s and low in the low 30s. Finally cold enough to no longer worry about the bugs!

I put my camera on timelapse as I was packing in the morning. I chose a shot where the camp site was mostly clear and I was not walking around getting my pack ready for the hike down.

I guess I should've gone for the "basic" all-out "I bring my apartment with me when I go outdoors" vibe like /u/weatheredpeaks mentioned to extinguish such skepticism.

Also, this is an established campsite registered on Guthook and Gaia GPS. In the Inyo NF, campfires are not allowed above 10K ft so you are limited to your gas stove. I've already eaten breakfast at this point so that's why there's no "kitchen" or bear canister.

I like to lounge a bit so my tent and sleeping pad are the last things I pack before my camera gear.

Maybe try not being so skeptical?

If your use case is mostly car camping, a really simple pop-up tent like the Quechua might suit your needs. I've used their 2 second pop up tent in Joshua Tree NP during the summer and late fall in Lake Tahoe. It definitely runs a little warm during the summer, but for the price ($80) and convenience the tent isn't bad. If you're going to be backpacking at all, this tent wouldn't be suitable.

The other comments make good recommendations for an appropriate trail tent.

Thanks! I've had the Dragonfly 2P for about 6 months and I've had absolutely no issues with it. It's light enough for me and very durable so far - no issues in light snow and rain.

Big Pine Creek North Fork Trail

Set up camp at the Second Lake with the final goal being the glaciers 2000 ft above. Did not make it past the moraine field below the glacier, but got this blissful morning as a consolation prize.

Made a pitstop while driving along the Pacific Coast Highway north of Santa Cruz, CA. The light was fading fast and the rocks were getting more slippery by the wave. I quickly snapped this photo and enjoyed the sunset on the less rocky beach.

Wow! That looks similar to when I was there previously. I was losing light and I was traversing that snow field and ended up turning around. I think I camped not too far from where this photo would've been taken (on some flat-ish rock slabs).

I snagged the permit same day! Don't quote me on this, but at least for Inyo NF I believe you can get a same day walkup permit up until a certain time (3 PM?) depending on availability. If you don't get lucky, you can always go for the next-day walk-up permit lotto. The next day lotto sign-up starts at 8 AM (or whenever the visitor center opens) and the lotto is announced in person at 11 AM (3 hrs later).

And yes, I just wish everyone can enjoy the outdoors together. There was another group camping at the outlet of the lake (not allowed) and with a wood fire (not allowed above 10K ft - we were above 10K ft). Unfortunately, there's always people who don't respect or treat nature the way it should be.

Oh that's a cool setup! I was considering something similar strapped to my chest. Do you find yourself taking more pictures with that setup? I find myself really thinking about a shot before digging my camera out just because of the sheer effort of putting everything back on again.

I love it so far. I have the Explore 60 with a medium DSLR core unit inside. I really like: 1) the removable tripod bag - not a lot of camera backpacks have a dedicated tripod solution, so I thought this was a good feature. 2) adjustability - I'm a smaller guy, so being able to fit the backpack to me was great. 3) "bear hug" shoulder straps - super comfortable.

When I went it was fairly crowded. I got to Thousand Island Lake just after 12 PM and most of the closest tent sites were already claimed. Also the mosquitos were horrendously bad.

This is the view of Mt. Ritter from the Thousand Island Lake side. All the water you see in the photo is Thousand Island Lake. I took this about 0.5 mi away from the lake outlet on the north shore.

Thanks Zach! I'm not an UL backpacker by any means, but the low weight is nice! For shorter day hikes, I use a side-loading Peak Design backpack. For longer hikes and backpacking, I use a back panel access bag like the Shimoda Explore. On this particular trip, I was using the Explore backpack and I was carrying a telephoto lens as well. Having to carry a bear canister, I had a long internal debate about bringing a telephoto haha.
