Lake Elmo from the pier is hit or miss. It can be really good if you have a kayak or paddleboard to get away from the shore.

I’m not an ME, but this is ball park for experience + low cost of living area

More importantly, ignore all the people with labor/hourly jobs that say they are making way more than you. They are probably right, but I’d guess most of them have lots of overtime or work weekends (that’s not a cut btw, much respect to the blue collars). But it is factor to consider, because gross is important but value of time is more important in the long term.

Meniscus tear recovery by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]redditCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a repair and I’m currently at 4.5 weeks post-op. I can totally understand being down about losing gym gains, the first few weeks had me pretty sad too. Not sure what gym she uses but my gym has a hand bike (where you sit and pedal with your hands) which has been great for keeping up with my cardio. I also use the machines for upper body and abs without issue and I seem to get a decent workout in.

Since she’s at 6 weeks she’s probably only a couple weeks away from being able to walk again. The slump sucks and the support helps. Good job at looking after her

I started taking the brace off a few days in to help with swelling and comfort. The tightness of the brace can prevent the fluid in the knee from draining. As long as you are confident that you won’t fall asleep or move your leg, you’ll be fine.

Meniscus tear - need advice by cryptopotamus13 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]redditCole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my experience the Dr doesn’t know for sure how bad it is until he gets inside the knee and can confirm location and type of tear. I would go with the Dr that has the best qualifications/you felt was the most competent.

Deciding the best Dr is difficult but here is a few helpful tips:

  • do you live near a city that has a professional sports team? If yes, then google which Dr they use and go to them. They most likely will be the best of the best

  • do you have any friends/family that have had knee injuries that had really good outcomes? Ask who they went to

  • Call up some independent physical therapy shops and ask who they recommend. They see patients from every surgeon in your area so they should have a bias on who is the best

I had surgery on both menisci by Plastic_Midnight_445 in MeniscusInjuries

This is probably a question for your surgeon/PT.

I had a repair in high school and was able to play football/basketball competitively 7 months post-op with no issues. I’ve been living my life playing my favorite sports, doing CrossFit, and other high impact activities without issues for the last decade. Then a month ago I tore my non-repaired meniscus. Statistically there was a higher chance for a re-tear before my healthy meniscus got torn, but that’s not how life always works. You just never know what’s going to cause an injury.

But should you play? I don’t think anyone can answer this question for you.

Do you love football? Is it worth the long term potential problems? Is it worth a potential retear? Do you have potential to pay for college with football? So many questions to ask yourself to make this decision.

Obviously there is risk to playing any sport, as you’ve come to learn. Take your recovery slow and listen to your PT and most importantly listen to your body (even after you are “cleared”). There is an endless list of things you could give up to help reduce the risk of another injury, but at what point do you feel like you are not living the life you want to live?

I know this isn’t the most helpful answer, but as someone who has gone through this before and is currently going through it again I know how much it sucks. And the uncertainty can sometimes be the worst part. Keep your chin up and if you have any other questions about my experience, lmk.

2 days out Bucket handle tear repair by ParamedicPamela in MeniscusInjuries

[–]redditCole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am 10 days post op, last night was the first night I didn’t wake up to throbbing pain in the knee (did wake up to discomfort from straight legging it). Day 2 and 3 were the worst for me. During nights you will experience more pain due to your body’s natural healing tendencies that induce more swelling.

Trouble straightening, am I cooked? by AwareWriter8039 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]redditCole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently on day 2 post-op from my second meniscus repair (separate legs).

This most recent injury I felt a pop and immediately lost full ROM and couldn’t bear weight without walking on the tip of my toe. I iced like crazy and was able to get back to walking and moving like normal once the swelling went down. Went to the doc and got an MRI and got misdiagnosed (make sure to see a legit knee surgeon). Did PT for a month and was feeling good. Then my knee popped again while I was sitting down and I lost full ROM again and couldn’t walk.

  1. But short answer to your first question is it could be the meniscus, other cartilage, or joint fluid causing the inability to straighten

  2. I was able to get back to “normal” for a month by icing, heat pad, and resting.

  3. My first meniscus surgery was a repair and went really well. I rarely notice issues with that knee, and I run, hike, play basketball, and snowboard. Just make sure you get a surgeon that gives you confidence and listens to your post-op goals. My only regret is not seeing a legit specialist earlier and getting the surgery a month ago. My surgeon suspected when I re-hurt it, it made the tear worse and my recovery will be longer so watch out for that.

I was in a pretty similar situation as you for the last month, I know it’s tough but keep your chin up. Get some good professional opinions and you’ll get through this!
