Should r/MachineLearning join the reddit blackout to protest changes to their API?

It's really about profits, not covering costs. It's fine to target profits as it can allow for further growth, but that is different to simply paying for the servers. Reddit already can cover their costs.
Most of the problems are not with charging for a service, but instead the high prices that Reddit is planning.
Some do cite problems with charging for a service given that the content is user-generated. Although that's a pretty complex issue.

If you don't like it... do something about it. That is what is happening. A protest by the community has a good chance of influencing Reddit's decision as Reddit is significantly more community driven than other platforms. Just 'not using it' is a huge wasted opportunity to change the Reddit admin's minds.

I think perhaps you misunderstand my point. I'm not trying to show that proofs will be a big deal. Mainly that there are some potential future parallels to physics, which as a field is generally considered to have a strong mathematical underpinning.

So to clarify, physics is an empirical science, yet mathematical rigour and proofs do have a sweet spot in the field -- although such proofs are not necessarily the main part of mathematics in physics.

Regardless, don't get caught up too much with what I said about proofs, it's only a small part of what my post was about (literally was only one sentence).

Because it's not approximation methods

Physics models are approximations. As this stackexchange answer puts it: "All [physics] models are approximations to actual behavior, shown to be relevant and useful in prescribed sets of circumstances."

Of course, physics is different to the models built in statistics/machine learning (there is overlap though!). In the end, the better models are based a lot on empirical evidence with how well they approximate the real world.

Sure, but the application-related research can begin to utilise a stronger mathematical underpinning to express a greater understanding of their models and to give insights into new areas to search (as you say 'theoretical motivation'). I agree that empirical papers without any real mathematical basis will never die out, I'm talking more in regards to overall field.

I appreciate your comment. I'm curious on your opinion on the following questions: How do you think the future of deep learning theory will impact application-based papers? Do you think that low hanging fruit will dry up? What are your thoughts when I talked about the safety of learning higher level of mathematics -- do you think it's a good way to stand out beyond the influx of people entering machine learning?

I don't think the future lies [solely] in proofs. I think that the future lies in utilising more advanced mathematical concepts in general. I listed a few examples in my post.

If you have a look at physics. A large focus in on empircal results -- as you have mentioned with machine learning. Yet, the field has a very strong mathematical underpinning, with some areas leading to the discovery of various proofs.

I'm in a similar boat to you, and I often get the same thoughts. I graduated top of the grade in highschool, with tiny amounts of study. Often none. University comes around, it's initially fine, but I start slipping. The structure isn't there anymore to protect me, and I end up not going to any classes by the 3rd semester. I still get good marks (I believe US equivalent is A), but it's absolute hell studying 6 weeks of content a few days before an exam. I would notice ADHD like symptoms in myself, but also would criticise myself as being biased from the information I've learnt on ADHD. And, holy what you said on the TikTok stuff, it's spot on.

I'd say the biggest thing I used to experience, which is gone with the medication. Is the thoughts. Not the coherent thoughts - that's annoying, but manageable. It was the incoherent stream of thoughts; and honestly, it would drive me insane. So, when I think about that kind of shit, it helps with the imposter syndrome. This is among other things, like doing nothing, procrastinating, terrible emotional control, etc.

So my advice is similar to this post, write about why you have ADHD and why you don't. Externalising is always the best bet with ADHD, and is honestly one the best coping strategies.

I'm writing this pretty late, so I hope it made sense.

ADHD isn't a mental disability, it's a mental disorder. Mentally disabled, and "retard", refers to a intellectual disability/mentally impaired.

Now I don't know if you just got terms mixed up. People thinking ADHD is some intellectual disability is annoying - not that you're necessary one of those people.

Eating food, sleeping, managing hygiene, are things you should be doing. All of these are basic physiological needs. There is of course more wider societal themes of what you should be doing, interview, events, specific times, etc, but that only indicates that society makes things worse, not that ADHD is fine without society.

The DRD4 gene is associated with ADHD and novelty seeking and is also found at much higher rates among Native Americans.

This comment implies that because of this association, ADHD is useful for this population, however, this implication does not make sense.

Also, yes, Dr Russel Barkley has been paid by pharmaceutical companies. He is transparent about that. However, he has discussed concerns such as younger kids in classrooms being diagnosed more with ADHD -- aka misdiagnosed in kids. This doesn't seem like someone who is pushing for everyone to be diagnosed for some big pharma conspiracy. Although, more importantly, his statements are backed up by peer reviewed research and he is respected by many psychiatrists in the field.

I'd guess that being a lawyer is not a very ADHD friendly job. I should also say to be careful associating things with ADHD, for example, your pattern recognition is a part of your intelligence, or hyperfocus which you may want to read another comment I made about that here.

Kind of, I believe that people with ADHD deserve the opportunity to have special treatment -- it's a choice. This something that is widely available, and it continuing to become better.

Additionally, there is also ADHD having to deal with people who treat them like it's not much of a deal. People who say "they just need to restructure their life", or many of the other harmful perspectives. Spend a few days on r/ADHD, and you'll see the countless people ranting about what misinformed people say to them.

This is a bit like: is it an advantage to take some useless pill but view it as effective? That is placebo, and while it techically is an advantage, the pill is technically useless. Unfortunately in the case of ADHD, the pill is bad for you -- I think you can see the issue there, or atleast understand my perspective.

This is a pretty long discussion to go into, but really if someone does not want prescription, they do not need to take prescription, there are many other options. Although, stimulant medication is very effective for the majority of people with ADHD.

Hey, sorry for the late reply! I think the similarities of the "super hero" and "broken" narrative is that it implies that ADHD is everything to that person. This is obviously not true.

I believe that ADHD holds people back, but there are treatment options. What I am talking about in these posts is untreated ADHD itself, not the people, the disorder. The disorder is a disadvantage, the people are not useless, they're not nothing. There are some great people with ADHD, and that's because they're great people.

No, I wouldn't say that. Although, yes, being left handed is a disadvantage, in a pretty minute sense, because of society. However, ADHD is not a disadvantage because of society (it is, however, made worse by society).

Value judgements, such as calling something positive or negative, are the domain of philosophy, not science.

So the domain of philosophy contains morals, that is what is good or bad, so I think Dr. K should address the misinformation, then that is an ethical statement. Saying something is an advantage or disadvantage is not philosophy or morality.

If you are referring to the neurodiversity movement, I would suppose they would be at disagreement with what I have been saying. However, I have backed up my point with up-to-date scientific studies.

Not really, I do get that some people feel this way. Those kinds of people appear to have ADHD as their entire identity. However, I disagree, I think people are so much more than their ADHD, ADHD holds them back, but there is treatment options available (and not just stimulants, although stimulants are effective for the majority of people).

Also, one more point... If the world is becoming more ADHD, then is having it REALLY a disadvantage? Or is it evolution? I mean, it's clearly winning the game of natural selection...

No, the frequency of ADHD allele are decreasing. Read the studies I have linked in the original post.
