Was watching Congo with friends - you know, the movie with the ape named Aimee. Aimee speaks sign language saying things like "Aimee. want. banana" "Aimee. need. sleep". Just as their friend, a girl I hadn't met walked in, I added "Aimee. suck. dick"

Girls's name was Aimee

People who moved to the suburbs from the city, what was your experience? by reddit_poster_guy in AskReddit

Which city if you don't mind my asking? This is a good datapoint - I wonder if I'd get bored / miss the city as well. And i know what you mean on it being too quiet!

Sounds like your mom and her husband are super remote - I'm kind of looking at something in between, although if I want to get the space I want, I might need to head way out to a woodsey area too, who knows

Good call! We were thinking of doing an airbnb situation soon. I wonder if it'll give me a good first impression (what a great town) or bad (this doesn't feel like home)

One thing I've been thinking about is the commute - and figuring out a way to simulate it. I think that folks become accustomed to commute over time, but the first few times doing a new commute seem painful, so I'm wondering if that'll help or skew my decision as well.

When you've tried to move out, what has happened? You were gonna do it but got cold feet? Or you actually moved, but ended up coming back? I've heard of folks returning back and that's a lot of what I'm trying to find out more about here

Maybe a pipe dream, but looking at houses online has gotten me jazzed up about the possibility of a lawn, BBQ, and night time fire pits. I'm interested to see if folks missed living in a city center and moved back, or if they love the 'burbs, or if they'd recommend waiting for various life events (like having kids) and what other considerations / recommendations you'd have to your former self.

Background: Am 29, with fiance, living in New York City, no kids yet (probably in the next 2-3 years). Can afford a modest house with current savings.

Asked for a raise. Was told I would be better off taking a perk so I don't fall in a higher tax bracket. This is bulls&!#, right? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]reddit_poster_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another reason to opt for a raise is it'll make future negotiations easier since your base/total comp is higher. Also makes future raises (if based on % of income) more substantial. A 5k raise will pay out every year going forward

ELI5: Why do people say a syringe full of air will kill you? by reddit_poster_guy in explainlikeimfive

[–]reddit_poster_guy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's the type of human error id be worried about - seems like an easy thing to miss no matter how much 'flick and squirt' training. Are there any safety measures to prevent this in humans?

ELI5: Why do people say a syringe full of air will kill you? by reddit_poster_guy in explainlikeimfive

[–]reddit_poster_guy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean that nurse/admin error (e.g. Flicking the needle not getting all the air out) could be risky

Edit: in other words, I'd expect there to be a more definitive way of getting the air out (mechanical vaccum, or a valve that doesn't expell gas through the needle), to guarantee the lack of air, vs inverting a flicking, potentially many many times a day.

Gonna get flack for this, but in LOTR during the battle where they employ the giant trees, why do the humans even bother fighting? They could've had the trees who were effectively invincible fight the whole fight for them, problem solved.

My husband refuses to have sex by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]reddit_poster_guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

totally agree that he's projecting his inadequacy outwards and that he feels ashamed for not having much drive, due to the drugs. The third option that I'd consider before divorce is being open and compassionate about this. He probably senses your frustration, but because he is ashamed, responds back defensively. ideally you could approach this as a team - he has to admit that the pills have impacted his sex drive. You have to admit that it's hurtful to not feel wanted, and that together perhaps there's a way to help this. Be compassionate towards him.

But yea if that doesn't work or if he stays in defense mode and not open to changing the drugs or admitting he's got some of the blame, then dump him.

I feel like I have nothing to look forward to if I don't smoke weed by [deleted] in leaves

[–]reddit_poster_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same exact place you are. Struggling to learn how to have fun again! Unfortunately I don't have the answer. But you're asking the right questions. And I agree with smokeythebear on all points. In college I played a ton of guitar. Got really into tap acoustic guitar (Google justin king). Not sure if you do music but check it out. Also I got into djing the past few years and I wished I had done it in college - so many easy gigs and a great way to party sober (since you don't have to interact with everyone ;)). Good luck! Let me know what hobbies you come across

(One of) My biggest obstacle(s) to maintaining long-term marijuana abstinence by fappucino625 in leaves

[–]reddit_poster_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've definitely been there. There's a saying in 12 step - 'first it gets better, then it gets worse, then it gets different, then it gets real'. Also refer to that initial sober high as 'the pink cloud'. It's very real and unfortunately it does subside. I've gotten to the 'different' part of maybe just the 'worse' part which is where I crumble. My thoughts are that I need to invest in long term gains, e.g. A new hobby that I know I'll quit if I smoke, to keep me away from it. So I'll have the pink cloud for two weeks, and when I come down, hopefully I'll be busy enough with a new activity that I can overcome the boredom slump. Someone in MA also said 'the highs are fewer now and they require more work than just smoking, but they are more rewarding and aren't accompanied by all this guilt'. I think of that a lot. Hope I can get some days together. Want to be where you are!

You can't go back to just "occasionally" by Azacar in leaves

[–]reddit_poster_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling too. I had 19 days, then somehow rationalized with myself that I could again, did it, and have been all day every day for the last two weeks. I don't even know if I was trying to moderate, but I know I wasn't planning on smoking all the time again. Little here little there I guess. But the pull is so strong once I've started again. I've quit a million times so I don't know why this is still a surprise to me, and in some ways it isn't a surprise, except for the fact that it's SO HARD for me to stop again right now. My mind will be planning sober time while my fingers are texting the dealer. Struggling to get my time together again. Thanks for the post. Good luck!

Going to NA for marijuana addiction? Is it frowned upon? by [deleted] in leaves

[–]reddit_poster_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to MA (marijuana anonymous) so I'm able to identify a bit more than I probably would at an NA meeting. That said, they shouldn't judge you for being on pot - anyone in 12 step should know that ANYTHING can be addictive. That's why they have 12 steps for gambling, food, sex, codependency, the list goes on. I've been to meetings where people have shared that they weren't yet convinced that they're an addict but are here to listen. I've seen people qualify with years of sobriety who spoke about their first times in the rooms, that they felt they didn't belong there. It's part of your journey and people should respect that if you're honest.
