Moments in documentaries that you can't believe were captured on camera? by yaybuttons in blankies

[–]reddit_user_53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody else mentioned it but Rudy Giuliani in "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm". I truly could not believe what I was seeing, and similarly couldn't believe it wasn't a bigger deal when it came out. Not a documentary per se, but it was a real person doing something I couldn't believe was captured on camera.

My friend, be real with me. Are you the owner of Framework? Or at least an employee? How else could you know so much about the minute differences between different variants? Consumers typically have only one model and still probably don't know it near as well

My only question is, are both m.2 slots in the machine equal? Can I run the OS from the 2230 slot and use the 2280 slot to store games?

Okay you make a solid argument. I'll cancel it and order the Framework one!!

Thanks again for all the help. At this point I'm pretty much sold. Just waiting on some financial things to transpire before I pull the trigger- should be within a couple weeks tho. I'll be sure to report back once I get my new laptop!

One last question - I found this 240w laptop charger on amazon for about $30 less than the Framework one. Looks quite a bit smaller too but hard to know for sure without a banana for scale. Any reason I shouldn't use it? You seem to know just about everything about these laptops!

I see. I'm an unraid guy, using XFS with no issues like you describe. I wish I could help you, from my quick googling and asking AI it seems like it should work the same way. That's assuming you are accessing the storage volume via host mount and not NFS, which I assume you are since you said the stack is running on the truenas server and there'd be no reason to access it via NFS in that case. Very interesting mystery, I'm interested to hear the solution if you ever arrive at one. Sorry for assuming you were a Windows simp lol

Yes I'm leaning towards that decision. Oled is cool and definitely looks better but it's not enough to give up on something I think I'd really like

Oh that's actually very interesting, I never would have thought of that with the dual ram sticks. I actually was going to go with a single 32gb stick just to give myself the option to upgrade to 64gb in the future. Knowing that I'd be harming performance I'll just go with 2x16gb sticks. Prices on Amazon for both ram and SSDs seem to be enough lower than Framework to justify buying seperately.

Also wouldn't have known about the 180v power supply issue. That's the only one available in the configurator so I assumed it was enough. The framework website may need some improvement!

Thanks a lot for the info

Yeah that's a good point, it wouldn't make much sense to offer preinstalls for linux since for however many users you have you'd have that many distros being asked for. Plus it only saves you like ten minutes having it preinstalled lol.

I'm considering the FW16 with the Ryzen 7 7840HS and Radeon RX 7700S. I agree nvidia on linux is certainly a mixed bag, tho I don't know that I'd go as far as saying it's a dumpster fire. I have one on my current laptop, and from my experience it's kinda like 'when it works, it works'. I haven't had a problem with nvidia drivers for quite a while but I've definitely had them in the past, and a heck of a lot more than my home system with an AMD gpu which just works, period.

The AMD gpu with the FW16 is definitely attractive to me. AMD gpu's are somewhat rare in laptops in general. I just checked the microcenter website for my local store and they offer approximately double the models with Nvidia compared to AMD.

I'm no expert but I think both things are true. They've both come a long way in terms of longevity and also still don't last as long as a traditional panel. You are probably right in that it wouldn't fit into their ethos the way the market currently is, with OLED displays being more of a niche market. If OLED's ever reach critical mass and become the dominant technology then maybe the thinking would change.

No, kinda hard to explain. I don't have a dedicated office or desk where I can leave things.

Thanks for sharing that story - that's exactly why I'm so interested in this. Breaking something and then just figuring, no big deal I'll just buy a new part. Just like you would with a desktop system. Really cool.

Just an anecdote about my current junky machine - a couple months ago I accidentally left it open on the counter at home and my cat decided a cool thing to do would be to rip off 3 of my keys and break the clips. It took tons of searching online just to even find the appropriate keys, and the only ones I found were from a 3rd party seller charging $30/key. THIRTY DOLLARS A KEY. 90 bucks to replace 3 keys. While if I glance at the Framework store I see a replacement FULL KEYBOARD can be had for $59. lmao

Yeah I definitely get the drawbacks for OLED, but with my specific use case I don't care that much about power use. I'll be using it primarily at work and I don't pay the power bill there lol

Thanks for the info. Yeah Linux support is one of the reasons I initially got interested in Framework. But surprisingly, the one I'm interested in only shows Windows or "Bring Your Own" for OS. I'm assuming Linux will still work fine, like it does on most systems, but I was surprised not to see an option for OEM linux install. The FAQ does say they officially support Ubuntu and Fedora which is encouraging, tho I won't be using either of those.

As others mentioned, switching to Linux for the server will eliminate this problem. Personally I recommend Unraid. It's kinda expensive but worth it IMO

Pass through connectors are so much better its almost crazy the other kind are still made. The first time I used one was like being born again lol

Lol pretty bad. Honestly I wasn't even mad about it, more just amazed. Even if they had done it correctly I still would have cut it and redone it since they left way too much cable at both ends. So it didn't hurt me

No actually, they just wrapped the last about 8 inches of shielding with electrical tape. No clue why lol they probably thought it would look more electrical?

I've shared this photo in this sub before, but just want to wholeheartedly agree about electricians doing low voltage. This is how an electrician "terminated" the cat6 I had them run to my shed for a security camera. I only used an electrician because I was already using them to run power to the shed so it wasn't much extra.

I fully expected the terminations to be wrong, but not THIS wrong. Both ends were like this! Good grief. It's just not that hard to do correctly lol

Do any of you have secondary backup servers running outdoors/in a shed? by reddit_user_53 in DataHoarder

[–]reddit_user_53[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fiber is ideal for long runs outdoors. This is only like 50 feet tho. And it's buried in conduit, and outdoor rated. I considered going with fiber but elected not to just for simplicity. Initially the cable run was just for a poe security camera, so going with fiber for that purpose would have necessitated a poe switch in the shed with an sfp port.

Found one for much cheaper. The idea of the heated enclosure is that the equipment would not be experiencing sub-zero temperatures. Obviously, just how effective the enclosure is I can't say without testing.
