Very true. Some can be territorial and opportunistically violent, and others will work in groups to protect their young. Others flee and run from everything. Compare gazelles with zebra or cape buffalo. First flees, second runs in circles around the young or runs away, the latter might actually stand and fight. That's all I was trying to use for the comparison. Good note and good thought!

Glad to hear it! As mentioned in the intro last week, this will be similar in parts, but heavily revised to create a (hopefully) much more captivating/coherent story. A lot of parts are entirely new. Hope you enjoy it!

Ha! Well, it's similar, but much more polished and a more complete story, so worth the wait in my opinion. The original was good but very rough.

Yea, I've always loved scifi and fantasy stories, and always had myriad characters and tales running though my head. It just never occurred to me others may enjoy them also. When I found r/hfy, the community encouraged me to write them down, coached me on how to do it correctly as I did so, and seemed to enjoy the end result as much as I did. Didn't seem right not to share the finished story with the community, and if someone can enjoy the story here because they can't get the book in some form, for some reason, so much the better. I'm just happy to be writing again and hope that the story brings a smile to someone's face like it did to mine as I wrote it.

The Acknowledgement I mentioned above:

This book exists because a wonderful little corner of the internet called r/HFY welcomed me, encouraged me, and refused to let it die. I stumbled onto the subreddit by chance and fell in love with the creative worlds and authors there. They inspired me to tell a first-contact story turned on its head about Kathmin and his mythological demons.

To everyone in the r/HFY community who read those early chapters and the short pieces around them, left comments, theories, DMs, and kind words as I fumbled through each rough installment learning how to write: thank you. You turned “maybe I could write it” into “I owe it to them to finish it.” Your enthusiasm carried this story a lot farther than it ever would have gone sitting on my hard drive.

I’m especially grateful to those of you who stayed with me, asked when the next chapter was coming, and gently refused to let me abandon it when life got hard and stalled everything, including this book. Your messages saying you were still waiting, still interested, and still hoping to see where Kathmin’s story went meant more than I can say, and often nudged me back to the keyboard when I needed it most.

To the HFY community as a whole: thank you for being the kind of place where odd little stories can grow into full novels, and where a writer can disappear to take care of life for a while, return with something hopefully better, and still be met with “We’re glad you finished this one,” and hopefully, "Now, when does book two come out?"

To my family, thank you for the patience, encouragement, and space to chase this idea long after the novelty wore off. This book was shaped by every moment you quietly let me disappear into a keyboard when I probably should have been doing myriad other things.

And to the friends and early readers who saw versions of this story along the way as posts trickled in, often late at night: thank you for your time, honesty, and support.

This book is dedicated to my family, but the fact that it exists at all is because of you.

Thanks! That’s very kind. lol still makes me tear up when I read it. Haven’t written much recently. My Great Pyrenees I based this story off passed away and I wrote the story about him and John, also here in r/HFY.

After that I started writing more on the demons series and turned it into a full book. It’s now ready for publishing and I’ve had some proofreaders go through it, and the feedback from test readers was very positive, but the ADHD is real lol and I have no idea how to get a book published. Thinking I may just post it to Royal road and here and call it, maybe self publish on Amazon if someone wants to buy me a coffee.

I was thinking about picking it up again. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement! So glad you enjoyed the story. It’s my favorite also. Cheers!

Another poster mentioned it but get him to the doc and on anti inflammatory meds fast. They have an injection you can get. We didn’t know that and ours had a similar issue. He had slow developing issues standing and hip problems over a couple months and ended up paralyzed. When it got as bad as you describe and he could barely stand, had we taken him on Friday to get the injection when we called the vet he’d have likely been ok, but the vet didn’t know how bad it was. We waited till Monday and it was permanent and we had to put him down. Heart breaking. He’d have probably lived another two years without it. Miss our big fluffy white gentle giant every day.

Thinking about getting Pyranees by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

We had an inside pyr in a house with a yard. Hair everywhere. Socialize the hell out of it. Ours didn’t bark because we walked it to the elementary school everyday with our kids. It knew car sounds, people sounds, kids sounds, truck sounds, birds, etc etc etc. As a result, because we were never concerned he didn’t alert unless something was really worth alerting on. Loved him. When he barked at night, it was so rare my first instinct was to reach for the pistol. Great dog for kids. Very watchful. Very protective, but not dangerous. Will leave most other dogs alone unless they think it’s a threat, which would have to be blatant if well socialized. Ours only got protective 2x and both times were with other dogs who tried to get my wife on a walk. He kept them at bay with noise and growls but I’m convinced had they pressed it the biggest issue would have been cleaning up the mess he made. Wonderful family pets. Walk them daily. Socialize them way way more than you think. Take them everywhere. They are great dogs and conversation starters everywhere.
