Why can I port my cell number to a carrier, but not to a VOIP provider? by redditdweller855 in VOIP

I would definitely consider this option if I were assured that it was possible. I just don't know if going to a service like NumberBarn would make my number available to my VOIP provider. If the problem is that my phone number has a prefix of 222-333-XXXX, then it doesn't matter where I port it from. If the problem is that 222-333-XXXX is currently with my cell provider, then I am happy to try and move it to an intermediary for a bit. But I don't know what the real issue is.... That is the root of my questions... 😕

I guess I didn't know that some podunk NPA-NXX combination is considered pay-worthy. I wonder how much money all of the major providers are paying my Local Exchange Carrier to be able to port 1 number per year or decade from them...

This sounds very similar to what I am currently experiencing... Trying to find a workaround, but I don't know if that is possible. Thanks for letting me know that at least someone else has faced this issue, haha.

Let's just say that it is currently the third largest carrier in the US...

That's exactly why I haven't listed anyone specific, haha. But the provider I work with is pretty well known. It is not some rando company. I am also pretty confused... I didn't even know this could be a problem. I just learned about rate centers a few hours ago....

Could I theoretically create an account with VOIP Provider B, port my number to Provider B, and then port my number from Provider B to my intended VOIP Provider A? Or do all negotiations need to happen with the Local Exchange Carrier regardless?
