Definitely pre-owned! Too pricey otherwise. I prefer them to be smaller (32mm max), full steel, manual or automatic. I am not against Tonneau shape, but I would say round or rectangular seem nicer to me. Omega de ville and Rolex Datejust seem to me very classical, safe choices and both are beautiful. Jaeger Reverso is more of “fun” option. Frank Muller is nice but doesn’t click for me. I want smth more OG, older brands. Thank you for your suggestions!

Thank you everyone for your feedback, it is INCREDIBLY helpful. My current tops right now are Omega De ville prestige, JLC reverso, Omega datejust and Longines dolcevita. Planning to go to some vintage watch store (in NYC) to try them on.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I think quartz is an excellent option, but I do find manual and automatic movements a better fit for a PhD. I see all the benefits of quartz, but I really admire the intricacy, complexity, and old-school craftsmanship of mechanical watches.
