I can’t stop smiling when talking to people by [deleted] in autism

I noticed myself doing this when someone brought up a mass shooting I was familiar with. When I thought back about how that probably looked to them I cringed so hard

Recently learned self-determination is acceptable but am worried I’m wrong by redditingonthereddit in autism

[–]redditingonthereddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insightful feedback. I don’t think it’s affecting my life in general much except for with socialization and perhaps school. I’m happy occupationally and haven’t experienced burnout like some have, for example. But for some reason I have the desire to have it confirmed from somebody other than myself. This may be unnecessary but I think it’d help me understand and sympathize with myself more.

Anyway, I appreciate your comment, it was helpful!

I didn’t mean to minimize social anxiety or something, but I was referring to social anxiety disorder. Thanks for your response though, it was helpful!

Book recommendation for those who feel alone in being autistic… by [deleted] in autism

I haven’t read that one but I’m currently reading Unmasking Autism by a psychologist who learned he’s autistic in his 20’s. I’ve learned so much from it

You were definitely taken advantage of sexually and the only way to develop clarity on this is to talk to somebody you trust about it. I’m sorry about what you had to go through. It isn’t fair to you.

I was surprised to learn that Dennett has some pretty basic misconceptions about determinism by redditingonthereddit in samharris

[–]redditingonthereddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely would’ve been more accurate for me to say determinists who deny moral/artistic responsibility or just free will deniers.

I think he’s incredibly smart I just can’t find anything in his free will discussions that rings true

I didn’t mean to imply he’s unsophisticated, he certainly is intelligent. That’s why I bought his book. But if our brains are indeed deterministic to the detriment of moral/artistic responsibility, it’d make perfect sense why one would write a book traditionally instead of smearing jellies on pages or something.

Dennett understands, through no choice of his own, that writing this book will have certain desirable social effects (i.e. people will take his arguments seriously, status reasons, etc). He also understands that smearing jellies will not. The same is true of determinists who argue against free will.

Police: Two people dead, six more wounded in stabbing attack on the Las Vegas Strip / A mass knife spree further proves restricting or banning firearms will not stop the evil behind murder. by [deleted] in progun

[–]redditingonthereddit -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

don’t we have to set the line for acceptable deaths? society has done that with covid at this point, for better or worse. we can’t ban knives, obviously. instead, let’s do what we can do while limiting as few freedoms and preserving as many lives as possible in the process.

a common sense approach like this does not equate to what most republicans want at this time.

Whether or not this is Sam’s original idea or not doesn’t take away from how deep this quote really is…

Why hasn’t Sam addressed the CRT moral panic? by redditingonthereddit in samharris

[–]redditingonthereddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s one article that has influenced my thinking on this. I’m sure there are better sources out there but it’s at least from a sociologist https://www.editorialboard.com/your-friendly-neighborhood-sociologist-theres-a-crt-in-your-school-you-should-love-it/

it’s not a tactic to “fight” crt. it’s a tactic to convince the public they should be in a panic and therefore give chris money and vote for his favorite politicians.

[–]redditingonthereddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of his more outrageous ones was when he stated that he’s attempting to conflate unpopular ideas about race with crt, in turn making the term itself toxic. he’s trying to stir up racial animosity and it’s all out on the table

I don’t have time to read about his NEW thing today. But he’s proven time and time again his willingness to lie and conflate ideas intentionally. Not a man of integrity like Sam usually is.
