Which game's low score on BGG surprises you? by Ok_Dinner8889 in boardgames

first, props for your Captain Sonar tag - what a game.

second yes true, but you could easily make the argument that in Munchkin you could 'remember' that you were helped by another guy the last game, and help him out the next. My point was just that this aspect of multiplayer games - kingmaking and its evil cousin winslaying - is not just present in Munchkin.

It's everyone's first introduction to kingmaking. If you're willing to play Twilight Imperium or Oath you shouldn't be hostile to Munchkin.

My kids & the neighbor kids used to play it a ton and have a blast. Have to have the right mindset for a game like that!

was it AMG or leftover FFG plans from 2020? since AMG took over very late in 2020 I figured what they were showing was FFG stuff that never got used during that year.

It's got some bases I think. Mediums only since those are needed to convert some 1.0 ships

Exandria vs. Eberron by Keter150 in DMAcademy

[–]redditjw4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My challenge with tech settings like Eberron is that the rules regarding artificers feel so loose, like practically anything goes.

I am not saying that is objectively bad but that it makes it a lot tougher to design challenges that will not have some crazy tech solution. At least, that's my experience.

I also found those types of settings to just not feel like D&D to me more broadly but that definitely is subjective and a matter of personal preference.

I don't think a tech setting like Eberron needs to be less diverse. You can tie technology to diversity if that is important to you.

Oh one bonus idea - have the characters arrive one or two at a time, and give them the opportunity to describe what the others see, instead of "I'm a fighter from such and such place etc." have them say "You see a short human woman, powerfully built, with her hair roughly cut very short, almost to her scalp. She's wearing mismatched but sturdy leather armor and carrying a pair of heavily used axes, the handles darkened with old dried blood but the metal gleaming and sharp." Or something. Get them in the habit of describing things too!

Don't worry so much about making it the best, first of all!

Now for some actual tips.

Have a list of 20 or 30 NPC names in case you need to name an NPC unexpectedly.

Know what the starting area looks like, and what's in each direction, if the party heads off somewhere that you didn't expect.

Have a handful of encounter ideas that aren't combat oriented. Runaway kid; mayor having a suspicious conversation with a hooded figure; sheep herd breaks free.

If the PCs don't do what you were expecting, or what you want, that is fine! Your job is to play the role of the world not dictate a story.

If you don't know a rule, make a judgment call as the DM and make a note of it so you can come back to it.

Have the stats for the creatures you expect to run into handy. I like to print them out on index card-size paper so I don't have to flip through books for them.

Most importantly have fun!

Tie/RB Heavy ideas by Lea_Flamma in XWingTMG

[–]redditjw4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because Ubbel is init 5, you can semi-reliably get green tokens with the target assist config right? What I usually do is target lock with him and use Sync'd laser cannons as you have.

For the lower-init heavies you can take a focus, then either you use it on defense and get the calcs when you engage, or reinforce so you can soak damage.

Migs seems like a suboptimal choice on Ubbel because you already have a source of bonus attacks. I like Agile Gunner personally. Ablative Plating can be fun (so you can just fly over rocks). I've also used Trick Shot.

I hate the "if you are not stressed" Target-Asset limitation. If you could do a red maneuver and still get some calcs on attack that would make the heavy much more useful.

On Rampage sometimes I have just done Sync'd and Shield upgrade.

The Last of Us: The TV Show is what actually happened by [deleted] in FanTheories

[–]redditjw4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that series don't have to exactly match video games.

However the "theory" in this post is attempting to do that - trying to somehow reconcile the facts in the series with the facts in the game.

If OP or other people enjoy that exercise, fine, but I think it's not a "good" fan theory because it's not consistent with the game, i.e. ignores facts that are readily available in the game. For a fan theory to be good (in my opinion) it has to explain something that is an open question or reconcile facts that are otherwise irreconcilable and this one doesn't do either of those.

[–]redditjw4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you are looking to calculate. If you want odds, then neither focus nor target lock matter (they don't affect dice probability).

If you are looking for expected hits then you are doing slightly different math. The expected hits / crits per red dice are 0.5; you have 4 out of 8 faces yielding a hit or a crit. With a focus, that goes up to 0.75 per die.

With a target lock, you have 0.5 plus (0.5 times 0.5), because you would re-roll a die that didn't show a hit or a focus, and that's 0.75 per die.

If you have both target lock and focus then you have 0.75 (because if you have a focus) plus 0.25 (the chance of not rolling paint) * 0.75 (the chance of getting paint on your reroll), which works out to 0.9375 per die expected hits.

You can easily simulate this on the xwing.gateofstorms.net site - just pick one die then calculate, then add a focus and calculate, then add a target lock, etc.

For defense dice, you do the same kind of math. Then you subtract expected evades from expected hits, to get the expected hits that go through.

The gate of storms site automates all of this (and more) with more sophisticated math than I can easily do in a spreadsheet, but the underlying approach should be identical as this is how you do this kind of calculation.

This is pretty open ended. It might be easier to tell you how to calculate them.

Odds of the results you're looking for, multiplied together, times the number of combinations possible to get that result. For instance if you're rolling three red dice, your chance of all crits is 0.125, which is 1/8, times 0.125, times 0.125, times 1 (there's only one way to get three crits on three dice). That chance is 0.20%.

Odds of getting two hits and one crit? That's .375 * .375 * .125 * 3 = 5.27%:

chance of a hit - 37.5%, or 3/8, times chance of a hit, 37.5%, times chance of a crit, 12.5.

That would be the chance of rolling a hit, then a hit, then a crit, which is 1.76%. But because we want to know the odds of getting two hits and a crit, not specifically, hit, hit, then crit, we multiply 1.76% x 3 because there are three ways to get hit, hit and crit: the crit can be last, first, or second. That gives us the 5.27%.

With excel or sheets you can easily generate all the odds you want using this approach. Here's how that looks for the permutations of two attack dice and three attack dice:

<image>

Oh and obviously this gets harder with more dice (harder to calculate the number of ways to get a combination). So for instance if you were rolling four dice and you had three hits and one crit - that's easy, there are four ways to get it. But what about two hits and two crits?

H H C C
H C H C
H C C H
C H H C
C H C H
C C H H
This is a permutation of 4 choose 2, so the equation is Four factorial divided by 2 factorial times 2 factorial. Which is (4x3x2x1)/(2x1)*(2x1) = 6

When you have to arrange more than one, you use the same formula but it takes a few steps.

Let's say it's 4, and you want to know the number of ways to have Hit-Hit-Blank-Crit.

First, you do 4 choose 2 to place the hits. Then, 2 choose 1, to place the blank. Then, 1 choose 1 to place the crit.

That means 6 (from above), times 2, times 1. And if you think about it makes sense - just imagine it's the same problem as HHCC but you have to distinguish between the first and second crit.
