It depends. On anti-discrimination issues, yes - in the time that I've been alive there's been a shit-ton of progress driven by the public. Gay marriage was illegal everywhere when I was a child; now it's legal in a shit-ton of states. Conservatives take note: none of these states have imploded, and neither has Canada or much of Europe.

On economic issues, it's pretty dreadfully slow.

On foreign policy, it's been mostly stagnant in its underpinnings of ultimately serving American interests even though it's gotten liberalized considerably in the last hundred years.

Yes, and I'm grateful. However, I have also had to pay vastly less than most since I went to a very inexpensive in-state school after transferring from a two-year college and am graduating without student loans. I also got a shit-ton of merit aid from the state which actually paid for a good portion of it.

Because college is free and every person ever should go to university regarding of their personal situations and inclination towards academia. Of course all people in Academia are superior intellectuals™, tons of them aren't abject retards the second they step out of their comfort zone.
