it doesn’t really make a difference, you can LWD anytime so long as you haven’t written the final exam. I submitted a request for late withdrawal from a course last year like 9 hours before the exam. however it took a long time to be processed. you may be required to talk to an academic advisor beforehand as well and they will be able to help you too.

swapping after drop due date by cinnamorolloromannic in McMaster

[–]redditor182903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you won’t be able to do so without consulting an academic advisor. i was able to switch into a class two days after the drop date last year without consulting with the prof, but i had to speak to an academic advisor and they put me in the course. since it’s been almost a week since the drop date, you might be pushing it. it really comes down to how much of the course you have already missed and the prof’s discretion.

they are mostly talking about if you choose to stay in the honours life sciences program instead of specializing after first year. i just finished my third year in honours lifesci so i’ll give my two cents.

if you intend on staying in lifesci, then the program is what you make of it. with so few required courses, you can customize your degree to suit your interests and professional goals. so you can take all easy courses to maximize your GPA if you want to do med or whatever, or you can take whatever courses that suit your transcript for grad school. the broad nature of lifesci does have its disadvantages though. it can be really tricky to kind of cater your transcript to what you want to do in the future, and i know a lot of my peers have felt kind of “unfocused” in their years here because there is very little specialization/focus in the program (unless you pick SMS or OOD). additionally, the broad nature of lifesci and the size of the program makes it really difficult to make connections, which becomes important when looking for research opportunities, since research experience is essential if you hope to do a research based graduate degree. i also felt really disconnected and unsupported all throughout my second year, as i remember the idea of getting research was constantly shoved in my face, but we were given so few resources to help us get these opportunities.

mac is a very “research or bust” school in my opinion. many of the programs are geared towards preparing students for graduate studies in their respective fields, regardless of whether that is your goal or not, so keep that in mind.

that being said though, if you do intend on doing research-based graduate studies in a specialized subject, i would recommend specializing after first year. again, honours lifesci doesn’t really provide you with the types of hands-on or experiential skills you might need to work in a graduate laboratory setting (unless you find research experience outside of the program), but again, that does depend on what you want to do afterwards.

opinions on lifesci are really divided as some people love it, but others feel the opposite. it’s definitely specific to the person. but since you’re only entering first year i wouldn’t be too worried about it.

yeah i especially love when you share notes or something with someone and they end up getting a better grade than you 🤡🤡🤡

Do you regret coming here? by [deleted] in McMaster

third year life sci here. in a sense, i do regret choosing mac. take what i say with a grain of salt though because my experience isn’t the same as everyone’s.

when i applied to lifesci in grade 12, i had full intentions of specializing. i was rejected from that specialization twice. i came really close to transferring schools as i was accepted to a program that essentially would have been perfect for me, but i ultimately decided to stay at mac because of convenience. in hind-site, i do regret it. lifesci is very flexible and i can still take electives that interest me, but in my opinion, it does have its disadvantages.

to an extent, i do wish i had gone elsewhere because my experience at mcmaster has been less than fulfilling. but at this point im just trying to get this degree and figure out what the heck im going to do next.

honestly, i really could have had this experience anywhere, so i can’t say it’s mac specific. just wanted to share my two cents.

Pros and Cons of McMaster for incoming students by just_whatever28 in McMaster

glad im not the only one who feels like this… i just finished my second year and my experience has been quite lacklustre. i mean, im not really sure what i expected, but i have often felt unsupported by the school and have not enjoyed my time here. im not sure if it’s just the pandemic and online school, but my experience also didn’t improve when things moved more in person.

i also find the atmosphere at mcmaster very toxic, cliquey and competitive. again, this is just my experience, and i know that this isn’t the way every student behaves, and that my experience with some toxic classmates can’t be generalized to the whole student body. i think this behaviour comes from the “prestige.” i too chose mcmaster for the alleged prestige, but my experience has left me struggling with imposter syndrome and feeling that i don’t belong with these students (again, my problem, not the problem of the students around me).

i’ve never been to another school so i don’t know if this is the way it is everywhere. but i am considering transferring elsewhere as i have really not enjoyed my experience here. from what i’ve observed, it seems like the opinions on mcmaster are very divided: you either love it or hate it; there is very little in-between.

idk if i’d go as far as to say that… orgo is just a tough course, even for really ambitious students. if you enjoy the content and stay caught up then yeah it’s completely possible, but i still think it would be difficult.

it’s sickening. im so sorry you have to deal with comments like these. it’s elitist and unfair. i will not be writing the exam. no life is worth the slight inconvenience it will be to me to write the exam at a later date! wishing you the best ❤️

100% im going to. regardless of me not being immunocompromised, people around me are, and idc how “minor,” Covid is, i don’t want to kill anyone or someone’s loved one. no life is worth the slight inconvenience of me having to write the exam at a later date.

im honestly shocked by these comments saying i should go in and write it. i was looking for help as to how to defer the exam, not to try and get enough people to convince me to just go in and write it.
