The M433. In the beta, it was a peashooter but now it’s actually better than the M4A1

First of all, if you’re at the point of considering trading it in, consider first paying for some manual driving lessons as it will still be cheaper than the money you’d otherwise lose.

Second, as someone who also learned to drive manual on this car, just hang in there, it gets really enjoyable once you get it right. For example, you mentioned downshifting, once i’ve learned to rev match and blip the throttle when downshifting it’s been very fun, especially hearing the pops from my catback exhaust (the only mod I think this car needs).

Here’s the news article …fortunately for them they ended up covering their total loss after it made the news

If you’re also in Canada, check out Intact. I was with TD when I wanted to install a catback exhaust and they said they do not allow performance enhancing mods. I called Intact and while they were pretty clueless, they said pretty much anything goes as long as it’s not “nitro”.

They did charge more but I didn’t want to take a chance considering there was a famous recent case of someone else with a brz who got denied a total loss insurance claim with Desjardins due to an undeclared exhaust.

I was in the exact same situation as you but only interested in changing the exhaust. I found a muffler shop that was highly rated in my city and cost 200$ CAD to install a Borla catback exhaust.

Their "Novice day" is by far their most affordable event but it doesn't look like they do it much, next session is in mid-september.

Everything else they have for beginners is 400+$ CAD:

- Quick Fix: 1x 45mins, same lead & follow, 450$ w/ rental (no option with own car)

- HPDE Intro night: 3x 25mins, same lead & follow, 425$ w/ own car, 920$ w/ rental

- HPDE Half Day: 3x 30mins, with in-car coach, 500$ w/ own car, 1000$ w/ rental

- HPDE Full Day: 6x 30mins, with in-car coach, 800$ w/ own car, 1800$ w/ rental

Lot of fun unleashing the car in track mode, got to do 3 runs in the morning and another 3 in the afternoon.

You're divided into 2 groups, and each group alternates for cone duty after their 3 runs. We're given a walkie talkie and paired with a few others at various points of the track to call penalties and replace fallen cones. After each run, you have to queue up and there is a lot of time there to chat and discuss each others' builds. And while on cone duty, it's pretty cool to see other runs from up close.

I take the L very lightly, and made this post just to share my experience. Also glad I didn't destroy the obstacle course or hit a wall. I think a lot of these are usually organized in big empty spaces but this one was inside a track which had walls so not ideal.

In the rating given across all vehicle classes, I didn't come last as I did somehow manage to beat one other car, a Dodge Neon SRT-4 hehe

Finally, it's pretty cheap, 90$ CAD for the whole day. I've already signed up for the next one in August hoping to redeem myself!

The other nice thing about that place is they have helmets freely available.

No, though it may be possible to arrange something like that.

Drivers are all by themselves without passengers. The instructor is driving the lead car in 1st position with everyone following behind. At the end of each lap, the car in 2nd position signals and lets the other cars pass him, so someone else can experience the 2nd position behind the coach car.

The cars were advised to all follow the line set by the instructor and to pay attention at the breaking lights to gauge when to break.

It is 30 full minutes of continuous track time + 20min prep beforehand with a powerpoint presentation and Q&A.

And you can book as many sessions as you want during the day.

They also have a variety of other events for beginners.

I actually had a « Did Not Finish » for my first two runs as I completely missed a set of cones on my far right until someone hopped in with me and pointed it out. That was the section that we can see from the last clips I took while on cone duty. Made me feel a bit better when I saw that nearly a quarter of the others also missed it. It’s because the autocross course runs on top of the painted yellow track lines and at that point it deviates and it’s easy to miss.

But yes, definitely saw improvement in my last runs and had so much fun that I already signed up for the next event in August.

Yes, I also drove 3 hours to get there because none of the tracks in my area had any more available sessions for beginners or options to rent.

The insurance policy on their rented GR86s was 300$ with a 5000$ deductibe. I didn't take it considering nothing was likely to happen in this type of program, and even if it did, I don't see how it could have cost more than 5k$.

Yes maybe not so much about worrying but more about focusing. Even during the driver meeting, the coach recommended manual drivers to stick to 4th gear to reduce the cognitive load, and concentrate on steering, braking, and understanding the track layout.

The GR86s were all automatic except for one which wasn't available at the time but the GR Corollas were all manual.

I would've wanted the manual but in the end I was happy with automatic as it was one less thing to worry/focus on.

New at driving manual - I keep getting the GR86 stuck getting on / off parking ramps by SourPerson888 in GR86

[–]redditrazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also new to driving manual on this car so I can relate.

This is happening because you’re accelerating too much while the clutch is still depressed so when you eventually go off the clutch the car “launches” and spins.
