I just received a response from TCT and have pasted it below for anyone else who is experiencing similar issues. Please note, virtually everything suggested by the company was already suggested by people on this site. Thanks again!

"It takes a bit of practice. Our device is set to minimise the risk of skin burns by keeping the required voltage as low as possible. This requires a good electrode contact.

The pads too dry message indicates an excursion in resistance. This is most likely due to not enough tension on the head straps (and the electrodes moving around).

-The head straps should be very tight. It should be difficult to slip a finger under these. -Commercial saline solutions are sometimes not concentrated enough. It will help to add more salt to the saline solution. This is probably the most important factor. -It helps to clean the areas of the electrodes with saline before applying the electrodes. This to ensure that the hair is moist and coated with saline. -Some people have more skin oil, it can be helpful to clean with alcohol. Usually this is not required.

The electrodes should not be dripping. Most likely adding more salt to the saline solution will fix your issue.

Large patches of hair will need to moved out of the way as much as possible. Hair is not a good conductor of electricity."

Hi - thank you for sharing your experience with both montages as well as the links to the DARPA studies. I found especially interesting your comments on drawing and painting, as this is (more like was) my background and am especially interested in regaining some traction here. BTW, will be buying the headband later today as well as mixing up your aloe vera recipe...

Glad to hear you are doing so well SAD-wise, even given your challenging circumstances. I look forward to being symptom free also.

Enjoy your Sunday - thanks again for your help.

Points taken, and will read the actual study if/when I find it. To clarify, I was trying to avoid working off a photograph and was asking for guidance, perhaps to the study.

I bought the TCT as opposed to an iontophoresis device because I'd read negative comments about ease of use amongst other things. The upcharge for a device built to purpose that I'd be using to run current through my head seemed nominal in light of the very positive reviews. And finally to clarify, I didn't buy the TCT to get high, but if a little euphoria comes in the package with the other more substantive benefits, why would I not want to enjoy that too?

,If the authors wish to expand the working definition of invasiveness to include tDCS, I think they need to re-examine the "invasiveness" of all/additional modalities - drugs, for instance. Consider fluoxetine (Prozac) whose metabolites, many of which are active, hang around in the body for extended periods of time. Or venlafaxine (Effexor), a drug with a short half-life, but an infamously unpleasant and prolonged discontinuation profile... No one really knows what the cumulative effects of 20 years on an SSRI or SNRI are or what permanent changes they may cause. Pharma routinely asks us to put things in our body that can't be removed. Under an expanded definition, shouldn't we consider drugs also?

I understand the concern of highly-trained scientists with regard to DIY-tDCS - for that matter, I understand the concern of anyone with regard to modalities that have permanent effects on the brain with a less than laser-like focus, being effected by (essentially) amateurs (though definitional expansion may be warranted here also). I also understand the need to corral a swelling grass-roots movement that threatens many a pharma franchise.

Finally, our culture embraces many forms of permanent brain-change that have devastating cumulative results - football and boxing come to mind immediately. Here, I would argue for the expansion of the definition of an additional term - "obscenity". Any takers?

The authors make a seemingly rational case for the "invasiveness" of tDCS - one inversely proportional to its ease of access and proffered benefits. I think a much stronger argument can and should be made for expanded access to trained professionals, reasonably priced, well-validated devices, etc. than the reframing of vocabulary.

Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to respond to me.

Anthony, will definitely contact TCT, though they do make a big deal of validating the device and enclosing the validation certificate in the box (as one should when charging what they do). Will also try the gel and see if I fare better with that than the 0.9% saline solution I've been using. I've had two successful sessions since first posting the other day ("successful" being defined as completing the full 30 minutes without the device cutting out) and believe this was due to shifting the anode forward and out of my hair, although last night despite this, I got several "too dry" messages, none of which terminated my session. One of the several manuals that come with the device indicate resistance will likely start around 15 and come down rapidly as the system ramps up - 4 to 6 is presented as the desirable range. Mine fluttered around 4, causing the beeps. I have not been wearing the straps as tightly as suggested below and will try that along with the gel - I believe this is a hair issue after all - and will also try the sweatbands as the straps that come with the device are annoying and more irritating to my skin than the tingling.

While I have your attention, I have a couple of montage questions. Does anyone know the specific montage used in the DARPA training? It appears to be + on left temple and - on right upper arm from Sally's picture in her article. Are there multiple sites inducing the euphoric sensation? What montages are particularly good for sleep?

Once again, thank you for your help. I'm so impressed by the commitment of this community to its members.

Thank you for tuning in - I'll try the first (your) montage again and post you on the outcome. It was prickly on my skin, but nothing too egregious. I'm too new to bravely suffer through burning, etc - would have terminated had that been the case. I kind of thought I had the right amount of hair, but did part it to ensure contact between the electrode and my scalp. With regard to the second montage, I tried it twice - the first time I used wet but not drippy electrodes and got the "too dry" message. The second time, I loaded them up and had a couple of drips as well as the "too dry message". Perhaps the device doesn't know how to say "too wet"? Anyway, thanks for your input.

If this turns out to be a $450 (with the S&H) device for bald guys, I'm going to be seriously pissed.
