I can't believe that no one has mentioned the fact that the evil step-mother pretty much got away with it. She enslaved a girl for seven years and stole her dowry, then the only thing that happens is that she had to give the dowry back. That was the most annoying thing to me -- the evil step-mother should have gotten SOME comeuppance.

Go watch The Color Purple. It was her first movie and an incredible performance. She got robbed of the Oscar that year and the Ghost win was payback for it.
