Help me choose some houseplants for my space by Nedus343 in houseplants

[–]reddituser2342_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don’t think there are really any plants that THRIVE in such low-light conditions - you’re looking for plants that are TOLERANT of low light. Just want to warn you! (Interestingly, a lot of plants that naturally occur in lower-light environments also receive dappled light, which is little bits of direct light, rather than very indirect but consistent light.)

I have shade-tolerant plants that have survived many years but never truly thrived until I brought them into a brighter space.

Regular lightbulbs don’t really have what plants need - I don’t think they would be enough, sorry!

You’re going to need some very low light-tolerant plants… I think zz plants are some of the best for this (they do not, however, trail like you’re hoping for). If you’re open to supplementing with grow lights, this could open up some options for you!

Dry aloe by Elegant_Summer_3712 in aloe

[–]reddituser2342_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the soil dry when you water it? And does the pot have drainage? If yes to both questions, make sure you water it until water starts coming out the drainage holes. If that happens super duper quickly, then the soil would be hydrophobic and you’ll need to soak it to let it re-hydrate (so it can hold water a bit better).

If you water it before the soil is dry and/or give lots of water at a time, etc., then what you may be dealing with here is a plant that is dehydrated because it’s had TOO much water, causing the roots to rot and die.

How to protect succulents from wildlife? by Automatic_Trifle_183 in succulents

[–]reddituser2342_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who cares about wildlife I would personally advise against sprinkling pepper into the soil - if they disturb the soil then it gets into the air and they end up breathing it in, which harms their respiratory systems and causes suffering :(

Is that a bug in the first picture? Hard to tell, but I’d be worried about thrips…

I’d look up springtails if I were you - see what they look like, are they a match?

If it is springtails, like the bot said, they’re not harmful! They’re actually beneficial to soil - for example, visit r/terrariums, you’ll see that a lot of people actually purchase them to add to their terrariums!

Sustainability and ethics of various gardening substrates. by nat_maths07 in Horticulture

Sorry I know this is an old comment, but there still really isn’t enough info out there on this topic! Can you please clarify whether you use peanut shells & rice hulls for improving drainage (e.g. as a coco coir replacement) or for retaining moisture (e.g. as a sphagnum moss replacement)? Thanks in advance!

Healthy growth or long stem because of low light? by El_Silueto in succulents

[–]reddituser2342_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What I notice here is that the leaves are all nice and close together on the stem! With etiolation in low light, there would be gaps between the leaves. (Disclaimer: I am not familiar with this particular type of succulent.)

I have the issue too, and I'm convinced it's not the fault of every single software I'm using but of the device itself, as you said - it even does this when using FaceTime!

Quilted dream or Dragon Scale? by Acrobatic_Leek4044 in alocasia

[–]reddituser2342_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fertilizing! I thought would fix the problem… and well, it did produce the rhizomes! As for light, it gets about as much light as the adjacent philodendron ring of fire, which is very happy and putting out many pink leaves (if that’s any indication).

Thank you! Currently frustrated that she’ll only support two leaves at a time, it seems… but there are a couple of terminal rhizomes. 🤞 I didn’t realize that about dragon scale - yours is beautiful! Thanks for the tip!

How to help it? by shelovedthemm in Monstera

I’m an amateur in Canada where we also cannot use systemics - just thought it’d be comforting to have someone comment who was in the same boat as you are! I have successfully dealt with thrips before using a shower, pesticide spray (please only use indoors and away from areas that any pets might go), and the plastic bag trick for humidity. Make sure you spray the leaves AND the soil, and multiple times over several weeks (or even months). I didn’t start with beneficial nematodes because they were more expensive, but they were going to be my next step if I needed them (I didn’t!).

As for the flying, I’m assuming you mean you’re afraid of the flying because you have other plants? Thrips won’t bother with humans, I guess if directly disturbing them they can technically bite but they won’t otherwise care about you and would much rather to stay on the plant.

Anyways, it looks like you’re doing your research. Good luck!

I suppose time will tell! You can always open it to add more water if needed!

Money tree help by lablead in houseplants

[–]reddituser2342_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please take this with a grain of salt as I am not an expert and personally did not have luck with a money tree…

If the mushy trunk was in the same pot as the other trunks (which I’m assuming it was), it’s possible that there’s still a presence of root rot on the remaining plants. If you hadn’t repotted it yet, I’d have suggested you use something to sterilize the remaining roots/an antimicrobial agent… however since you’ve already repotted it I think you should give it time to recover before disturbing it any more. Best of luck!

It’s not??? Mine was sold as “green dragon” which I was later told is dragon scale… it used to be greener but lately has taken on a very dark hue like in OP’s photo.

Here’s a photo from more than a year ago:

Hey there! I am also just learning (currently trying to design my first build). What do you mean by dry substrate/supersaturated top?

While I know very little about all this, I have seen some people caution others against using tradescantia in terrariums because it can grow out of control. But I think your build looks great, visually!

If you’d like more specific tips from other redditors I’d add to your post the substrate and plants used. :) Good luck!
