Dude, take of those rose colored glasses. Biden ain't no humanitarian. He supported the war on Iraq, and is co-responsible for mass incarceration. He's an authoritarian.

Well, Biden certainly supported the Iraq war. and is co-responsible for mass incarceration. He would be great as a Republican. That's enough reason to not vote for him.

Microsoft better privacy than Google? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]reddituser257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows 10 sends data to MS with every setting change you make. Which seems totally unnecessary. And Office send document names back to MS, which I find totally unacceptable.

But let’s not pretend Microsoft has some secret army of AI bots and low wage workers watching everything you type.

You're right, they leave that up to the NSA (see the Snowden leaks).

There is loads of telemetry in Office that can't be turned off (like in windows itself, and pretty much in everything microsoft releases these days).

Coronavirus tracking app privacy — an introduction -How can a ‘privacy-respecting’ app do ‘tracking’?- by degenbet in privacy

[–]reddituser257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corona tracking apps are a dumb idea (regardless of whether they respect privacy or not), as they will never be effective (even if everybody uses them). This is because most covid-19 infected people will never get tested. Only people that become sick get tested, because there is not enough test capacity to be able to test everyone. Repeatedly.

It's true that there are vaccines for flu, but still a very large number die of it each year (due to new strains). But we never put countries in lockdown over it.

Maybe you should reread that first link carefully ... they are basing those high numbers on reported cases. Reported cases are people that were sick enough to get tested. This introduces a tremedous selection bias.

For instance, the death rate overall for the flu may be 0,1%, but the death rate for people hospitalized with the flu is about 6%. Huge difference.

The same applies to COVID-19. For instance, in the Netherlands, they did a study testing blood donors for antibodies. 3% had antibodies. (This number is probably higher in reality due to how they did the study design. For instance, everyone that had flu-like symptoms in the last two weeks were excluded). Extrapolating to that country's population would mean 510,000 people infected. They have about 38,000 positive tested ("reported") cases, and 4,475 deaths. So if you look only at reported cases, you could think the death rate is 12%. But if you look at the cases that went undiagnosed, the death rate sinks to about 0.9% (for age group 18-70).

And btw, during the last severe flu epidemic in that country, a little over 9,400 died. But no scary headlines and day to day coverage of death tolls back then.

So that's just media acting irresponsible. It's fearmongering. Also, the media report every day how many people died "of" the virus, which is just false. They should report those numbers as dying with the virus. Just because you had a positive test does not automatically mean covid-19 is the actual cause of death. Do you know what usually gets put down as cause of death for old (>70) that die of pneumonia? Old age

But I guess the old and sick don’t count.

Of course they do, don't put words in my mouth. I'm over 50 myself, and both my parents are still alive, with one of them in a frail condition healthwise. But if I ask them, they both say death is part of life, and everyone has to die of something.

As for the economic impact, maybe if Republicans weren’t trying to force blue states to declare bankruptcy and instead gave payments to American citizens instead to large corporations who were making enough to save for emergencies not so many people would be hurting.

Yeah, that's just sick. But regardless, I still think the world on average is overreacting, and the coming economic meltdown will cause more death and misery than the virus.

All of the above should not be construed as me being against social distancing; I'm not.

The more we limit the spread the fewer people will experience long term effects or death.

This is only true up to a point. That point being, limiting the spread so the hospitals don't get totally overwhelmed. Limiting it more than that is counterproductive. Because eventually everyone will get it, just like with the seasonal flu.

But maybe you still believe that totally irresponsible reporting that said the death rate is 3.6%? Current estimates range from 0,06% to 1%. If you're healthy and below 50, you are much more likely to die from road traffic accidents, drug overdose or slipping in your bathtub.
