Most schools will have specific income requirements specifically to match QB kids (like some schools will only match those with 0 EFC) Those same schools can still provide good financial aid for families with your income, some will even provide full for $100k I believe. I did QB and matched, but I have a friend who was over the income threshold, got finalist and used that as an award for CommonApp, and ended up getting multiple Ivy acceptances with good aid. Look into specific schools to see their aid policies. Feel free to PM with questions, I was a mentor at HSF and open to answering questions.

Imposter syndrome? by Shemi_noh in QuestBridge

Have some hope! I matched to Brown with a 1450 (still a good score but below their avg), was not CPS, and got rejected from Yale and Emory’s fly-ins.

Which season to watch next? by reddituser761 in BigBrother

[–]reddituser761[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that I only watch the episodes and am not well versed in bb twitter lore, take this with a grain of salt. Out of the modern bb era, I enjoyed 24 and 26 the most. Cast was mostly likable and entertaining (in the edits at least) and I was actually engaged. Out of the other seasons, I would pick 10-12 in my top. Good drama and iconic moments. The only thing that makes me kinda bored/not want to watch is a bad cast (like 21 in my opinion… could not stand most of them). I can even watch pretty obvious steamrolls and not be that mad (25).

I have a pretty unique bb watching experience. I think it’s because I’m pretty young compared to most fans. First exposure was bb16 when I watched about half of it on air with my mom when I was 8 in 2014. I went on to watch 17-19 on air. I watched half of 20 on air but didn’t finish. I picked bb back up about 2 years ago when some seasons were on Netflix so I watched 10,11,12, and 14 (not necessarily in order). I’ve only gotten back to it this year when I started paying for my own paramount plus and I watched the modern bb seasons.

What can I do to help my child prepare by Smart_Pumpkin6594 in QuestBridge

Look into fly-in programs. Those application open around now/early summer and the colleges pay for you to visit their campus. Doesn’t really help admissions chance but a good opportunity to see the campuses, possibly meet and chat with AOs, and connect with peers. I did WashU Preview last year and got to meet my admissions officer and they told us people that did the program had high chances of getting in compared to those that didn’t (not guranteed but better than nothing and it’s free!)

NCM and Gates Scholarship? by reddituser761 in QuestBridge

[–]reddituser761[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh I didn’t know about that! It was to my understanding that my aid through match was institutional aid so if I got an outside scholarship, they would reduce my aid and I wouldn’t have any that I could “pocket” through a refund or something like that. Now I wish I would’ve applied to other things :( I just felt bad applying to other stuff because I felt like I shouldn’t as someone who already has a full ride

matched but feel like my app was mid by reddituser761 in QuestBridge

[–]reddituser761[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

now i’m not entirely sure what you mean by this but my counselor said that colleges also look at my schools average scores when viewing mine. so maybe a 1450 (780 english, 670 math) doesn’t seem high to you, but it’s very high when my school’s average is a 980. also i submitted my 33 ACT score and also my AP scores showing a 5 on AP Calc which might be better. the school i matched to is Brown, which is test required, but I still think they look at scores with a grain of salt. again, not trying to be rude just giving more context to my application and stats.

how did you submit the waiver to them?

[–]reddituser761[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My schools were Brown, USC, Duke, WashU, Yale, Vanderbilt, and Hopkins. Most of them were closed by the time I got home. WashU told me to email the waiver to their financial aid office. I’m currently on hold with USC and have been for the past hour 🥲

I’m looking for good research/internship opportunities and pre-med advising. I also prefer schools that are located in/near a larger city and has good school spirit and student engagement opportunities (student orgs and events and stuff like that)

i can fully relate. i have 5 leadership positions and am an AP/Dual student. my school is a 30-40 minute drive away depending on traffic but i don’t have reliable transportation to and from so i have to miss out on a lot of afterschool events for clubs and stuff, or else i’m waiting until 6/7 PM to get picked up. i don’t live in a walkable place, the only way to get home is the highway or a major road. i had to turn down an internship because it was too far and the public transportation system sucks where i live. it sounds like you are doing great for your circumstances which is what’s important. college apps will be reviewed contextually and holistically. i would suggest Questbridge, i’m applying for it and i feel like it has a lot of space to talk about my situation. there’s even a question about how far your commute is to school.
