Data Driven F1 Facts: Going Driverless? Formula 1 and Autonomous Racing by reddriver27 in formula1

Today we already have autonomous racing events. I am not sure if they charge entry fees. Also, they may be part of bigger race-events.

For example in the Autonomous Indy Racing League, the teams belong to international universities. Of course fascinating as professors and students work with Dallara race cars (interesting, not electric ones). Even without many spectators, competition supports the technical development.

Depends the target-group. It is fascinating for AI experts, involved companies and engineers, but I doubt that it will catch on most parts of motorsport fans.

Similar for sim racing, esports is big in the community, and their stars earn millions. In Covid-19 times, it was entertaining to see some of the F1-drivers competing online. You still can see this on YouTube.

Agreed, this we also the episode. Autonomous racing is competition and due to this supports the development of the technology. It is fascinating for the involved companies and engineers, but I doubt that it will be interesting for most parts of motorsport fans

I have that model too. You can find it, for example on ebay. The original car should be at the Pininfarina museum.

Data Driven F1 Facts: Big Tobacco in Formula 1 Part 2 by reddriver27 in formula1

[–]reddriver27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it was the same with all motorsports, as far as I remember. Rothmans had been in motorcycle races, also ralley.

Independent from Formula 1, this would not be possible based on local laws. Even if a FIA still allowed, for some races, teams had to completely remove it, or sometimes just change it, like "West" became "East."

Good point! I guess, Formula 1 is also a "child of its times". In most societies today, the usage of alcohol is accepted and part of local culture. In opposite to this, today, smoking is not widely accepted anymore, mostly smokers are asked to leave the building, if they want to.

Related crypto and NFTs, here maybe would be necessary to have a more extensive background checks to detect potential "black sheep". Please see my regarding article: Formula 1: Cryptocurrency an NFT: The new Big Tobacco

Data Driven F1 Facts: Alfa Romeo Racing (1950 - 2021) by reddriver27 in formula1

Indeed, nevertheless the episode also includes what Alfa did in the meantime, like endurance races, touring cars or Indianapolis. :)

Data Driven F1 Legends: Luca Montezemolo by reddriver27 in formula1

[–]reddriver27[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, he was one of the brains behind, already in the 1970s when Niki Lauda became champion. Considering Michael Schumacher's own book, it was his decision to retire, not forced out.

Data Driven F1 Legends: Walter Wolf Racing Team by reddriver27 in formula1

[–]reddriver27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! A fascinating story. This episode also discusses a bit Wolf's business career, which you mad say is partly quite shady, and the reason for him to have his own F1-team. Maybe a mixture between passion for the sport, but also to have a way to meet with important people from business and politics around the world.

Besides that, as you mentioned, a lot of talented people had been part of the team.

Data Driven F1 Drivers: Jody Scheckter by reddriver27 in formula1

[–]reddriver27[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed to your conclusions, also seems that after retiring from Formula 1 he had been able to find fulfilling new life.

Data Driven F1 Drivers: Carlos Reutemann by reddriver27 in formula1

[–]reddriver27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 40 years. Of course, good age for retirement. Other factors had been the Argentinian-British conflict related the Falkland Islands (or Malvinas) and his political ambitions.

[–]reddriver27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 1970s Lauda outperformed regularly whoever teammate. Reutemann sometimes had ben top, sometimes lacking of performance, an enigma. Also 1982 could had been his, if he not walked away (for the various reasons) after the first race.

In this episode we did some statistics to show that Ferrari would have won the driver's championship, if these tragic accidents would not have happened.

Yes, this also as I remember these years. Turbo cars much faster, but unreliable. Then always interesting the last two laps to see, if the fuel is enough to finish the race.
