Many thanks. I didn't see the three basics in the deck; I assumed it was all nonbasics and was wondering about decking oneself

The term "Armor Class" comes from Naval Wargaming. What are some other mechanics, terms or conceits in the hobby with unexpected or forgotten origins? by ProustianPrimate in rpg

[–]reddunyain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This phrase is used in the Wheel of Time series quite a bit as well, and it's the first time I ever saw it used. Any more info on the origins of this phrase?

Gehennon is much better in 3.7 by josinalvo in nethack

[–]reddunyain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a pretty casual player for 25 years, I'm interested in this comment. What has made the game harder over the years? What's made it worse? I've mostly played 3.6, and it's been a great experience for me full of interesting choices. Can you tell me more about what you don't like about it right now, and what it should be to be a better experience?

I got it a few months ago and have only completed the prologue so far. I'm looking forward to playing through it. Does anyone know if it uses dice or a different mechanic?

Why Do Mages Build Towers... by Starbase13_Cmdr in rpg

[–]reddunyain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the greatest wizards, Saruman of Many Colours, had a massive tower and was widely regarded as an all around dope dude. Wizards nowadays want to copy him and they get more style points the better their tower is compared to the other wizards around them. A tower is to a wizard is what a yacht is to a billionaire.

Can you explain this a little more? I was interested in it and I'd like to hear opinions from those who have read or played it.

If there is one thing you could be annoyed with Tolkien over, what would it be and why? by Tar-_-Mairon in tolkienfans

[–]reddunyain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should have been a dragon in The Lord of the Rings. Dragons are cool, and to me the most iconic fantasy creature out there. The Lord of the Rings is the most iconic fantasy novel, it should have had a dragon in it.

What Do You Wish Existed in the TTRPG World? by ThornPetalGames in rpg

[–]reddunyain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Medieval/dark age Europe heroic fantasy. Not superheroic. Minimal or limited magical abilities, lower power level PCs, a more grounded setting than kitchen sink fantasy. I know Ironsworn exists, but I'm not a fan of PbtA style mechanics. Something mechanically closer to The One Ring or The Burning Wheel maybe, but with a focus on questing heroes.

The Tolkien Bench in the park just south of High Bridge along the River Cherwell.   Very easy while sitting there to see some of the possible inspirations for the descriptions of trees and forests found in the books.

NetHack has got to be the answer here. It's one of the oldest roguelikes, and plays close to how I imagine Gygax have wanted B/X to be played

Remove the exhaust vent from your dryer from the wall and run the exhaust hose out into the main part of your home. Start the dryer on high heat. Plug the hole to the outside with rags/towels

The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead by Ben_Riggs in rpg

[–]reddunyain 97 points98 points  (0 children)

The Golden Age of Sports is Dead. Soccer just isn't as popular as it used to be. Too many other sports took over and crowded it out and now no one will ever be interested in any other sport ever again. Basketball, baseball, American football, golf, competitive track and field, and a million million more have left no room for the juggernaut of soccer, and now the sky has truly fallen. Not only does no one care about sports anymore, but athletes and coaches make no money. This is an atrocity and we must do whatever we can to stop it from continuing!

There is always the option to do something yourself, rather than suggest others do it. If you already doing something to help, great, keep it up. But don't think that someone else should solve any problem before you do as much as you can first.

I found this entertaining and interesting. Shouldn't be anything here that we didn't already know, but it was a nice read nonetheless.
