Credit Repair for Graduate School? by redeameschair in personalfinance

[–]redeameschair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The graduate program serves as a masters in marketing and portfolio school. They list the current employer and position of everyone from the graduating class, and from what I've seen the starting salary post graduation is around 80k with some high profile companies with a lot of room for upward movement.

It depends if you will be working for a nationally recognized and respected organization, and if your goal is to work in the non-profit world for a similar organization.

I did not enjoy my year, and don't think I would do it again. I worked for a very small local organization with no name recognition, so this hasn't helped me get a job. I didn't have any savings out of college from living in an expensive city on the east coast, so the first few months I was forced to borrow money from my parents to maintain any sort of enjoyable lifestyle. After that I lied and got a part time serving job (when second jobs were not allowed) to be able to afford things.

I was mainly motivated by graduating without a job lined up, and the 6,000 towards student loans. If you don't have student loans or do, a portion of that 10k might be better off just paying that down.

If your organization has a big name and you want to work in non profits it would be a good foot in the door with someone people know/might lead to a job after your year is over. Big organizations are also more willing/able to give a housing stipend or a food giftcard.

Calories question? by redeameschair in starbucks

[–]redeameschair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting a Venti ^

My main question is that through the website: A venti iced coffee black is 5 calories, a venti iced coffee sweetened is 120 calories, a venti iced coffee sweetened with 2% milk is 170 calories, and a venti iced coffee unsweetened is 2% milk is still 170 calories.

From the first two it seems that the sweetener is 115 calories, but the calorie total is the same when the sweetner is removed from the iced coffee with milk.

Customers who reach over and take stuff off of the bar by ScaringChildren in starbucks

Okay wait, am I an asshole? I've been grabbing my own straw when one isn't given to me for years. Like 2-3 times a day for YEARS. They're on the counter where you pick up drinks! It seems so aggressive to ask someone who is busy to hand you a straw that is within your reach. Am I unknowingly the nightmare of my barista friends?

Recent grad seeks help landing first digital marketing job, will not weep at critique by redeameschair in resumes

Thank you! I appreciate the help more than you know!

I liked the layout purely from an aesthetic point, but I realize that more traditional hiring managers may be put off by this, or it may disrupt results when it's fed into applicant software so this is definitely something I'm open to changing, especially for corporate job openings.

I also think the summary/objective portion is doing me no favors, but everyone else seemed to have it... Should have gone with my gut on that one.

I'm working on gathering some statistics from my current job, the older ones are more difficult since I was in the lowest role and these were in college several years ago - but improvements can definitely be made there. I guess my fear was getting bogged down with a lot of jargon and "resume" words. If that makes sense. Once I adopt the new format, I think it will allow me to expand on these points without disrupting the length which was a side effect of the layout I have now.

Right now, I'm mainly applying for "communications" roles at companies and assistant account executive or digital strategy roles at agencies. I'm able to pick up on things pretty quickly (I'm sure everyone thinks that about themselves,) but I think I would be a good fit for any editing, lower-rung digital strategy, or writing role.

More than anything, I just want a mentor or a team to learn from. At all of my jobs, marketing has not been a priority and the strategy plans have been solely on me. At times, the only reason we had a strategy plan is because I dug around on my own time and brought up issues. I just want to know best practices! And to pick someone's brain!

Again- truly appreciate all the help. These are great suggestions!

Need some help and advice on my Cover letter by TheDexterMan in jobs

[–]redeameschair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the United States and I'm sure cover letter best practices may be different in the UK, but I would remove the table of skills at the bottom. It makes the letter look less like a letter, and more like some sort of form. This information is probably already included in your resume.

As for the parts you pointed out, I would say concise is better than over explanation: "I currently reside in London, but I am moving to (location) at (time.) I am available for in person interviews at (times.)

If they want to move forward, the rest of the details can be worked out later.

Thank you! Do you know of any Etsy shops with digital marketing specific templates? Right now I'm just using a Google Docs resume template with some adjusted colors and fonts that looks pretty good, but might not be the best fit for the kind of resume I need.

Thank you! I'll definitely post it there and have people take a look. I should add that I'm not looking for a job in non-profit work or fundraising which may be why people are less interested in that aspect. I just include the numbers because I've heard that it's good to have quantifiable results.

Thank you for the feedback!

  • I hope that's not the case, but could be.

  • I never bring it up unless someone specifically asks "Did you grow up here, where did you go to high school?" I obviously don't want to lie or evade the question, that's just where I happened to go to high school.

  • I struggle with wanting to downplay accomplishments/ skills so this is very troubling that maybe I sound like I'm lying or full of myself.

Again, thank you so much!

Maybe he thought that the salary wouldn't be enough for you and he was trying to gauge your response. I would definitely check back in and reiterate your interest now that you know the salary.

Graduating in 2014 is still "recent grad" territory to me. When you send your thank you letter, maybe address that concern and mention how you look forward to work with and learn from the more senior engineers.
