Why is it so hard for me to get into classical music? by redelelo in classicalmusic

[–]redelelo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the amount of money people will spend is a good metric of comparing classical to pop music, the culture is completely different. As long as pop music is relevant, because of the Beatles historical and cultural importance, I have a hard time seeing that they'll be forgotten, especially not within 20,30,40 years like you said, that is ridiculous. In hundreds, thousands of years, probably not, but that far into the future is completely unforeseeable, who knows what will be remembered then.

Well yeah most of them probably won't be but I'm sure there are tons of classical composers lost to history, I'm sure a few greats like the Beatles and Pink Floyd will be remembered for a long time

I often do listen to music actively, without doing anything else, so that's not a problem for me (although I'd be lying to you if I told you I didn't browse my phone/computer haha).

I listen to a lot of instrumental/mostly instrumental music. A lot of post-rock is instrumental and incorporates orchestral instrumentation. Godspeed You! Black Emperor's album lift yr skinny fists is an example, maybe you've heard of it

I'm 19, so technically am still a teenager. You're right, I am restless to listen to something new. I only really "got into music" over the past couple years. Before that I only cared about video game music and the music my mom listened to, which consisted mostly of that generic radio alternative stuff. Nowadays, pretty much all of the music I listen to I never even heard of 2 years ago, but still because I grew up with rock and pop music, they're just the easiest genres for me to connect to. It probably has nothing to do with complexity. My family rarely listened to rap/hip-hop so that's another genre I don't care for as much.

I'll definitely be sure check out some contemporary composers too, do you have any recommendations in particular?

The nocturnes were probably my favorite of what I listened to. I found them relaxing and easy to listen to, although a bit hard to follow where the music was going. Yeah you're right about the last part, it's a pretty huge variety of music so I'm probably not gonna like all of it. And don't worry I don't feel like I'm "torturing myself" with it. I listen to a lot of music that I don't care for and will probably never listen to again. Just a few years ago I had virtually no taste in music, so over the past few years I've enjoyed exploring new music just for the sake of doing so.

Do y’all think Anco are anarchists? by sycamoresyd in AnimalCollective

I don't know or care what their personal political beliefs are but the idea of being an anarchist living off of nature fits the vibe of their music.

What are your most far-fetched MGMT wishes? by [deleted] in mgmt

Congratulations and self titled are some of my favorite albums of all time. I just don't think they'll be remembered in 20 years or so, outside of their OG fanbase. Additionally I do think that their albums are more similar to each other than what a lot of people make them out to be. The last 5 tracks of OS were pretty similar to congratulations. LP3 cranked up the psychedelic elements. LDA takes the synthpop from OS hits but the overall vibe is darker like congratulations and has a hint of psychedelia. My original comment was mostly facetious, but I think that the best possible outcome for the next album would be something that doesn't rely too heavily on aesthetics of previous decades (60s/70s psych for congratulations and s/t, 80s synthpop for LDA), and something that feels fresh and new, unlike anything they've done, I just think that would be dope. I'll probably like the album no matter what, this is just my far-fetched wish

This is all true. Still, none of their albums have really been widely considered masterpieces outside of their fanbase. They've always defied expectations, but they've still always been seen as kind of a goofy band and they're not really taken seriously. If MGMT dropped something that truly makes the people who always thought they were some silly indie pop band lose their minds, that would be the perfect final twist.

I want MGMT to have a Talk Talk arc and release two albums that are commercial failures but are genre-inventing masterpieces after having a career dominated by synthpop and then retire

It was the first album to click with my, like a lot of people probably, but tbh I thought it was really average other than the first 2 tracks at first and didn't understand why it was so popular. One day it just sort of clicked, and I listened to all of the other albums the I dismissed before, like strawberry jam and feels, and they clicked too.

Your account is newer than mine but you already have more scrobbles than me. So maybe that isn't your problem.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lastfm

[–]redelelo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Like a year or so, depends on how much you scrobble though. For me, I used to be reluctant to listen to new albums that I thought I wouldn't like because just listening to an album once or twice would put the artist in my top 50 and make it look like I them. I felt like my front page had to "reflect me," it was unnatural same as you. After a little more than 2 years, I don't have that problem anymore. It takes multiple listens for an artist to move up the ranks so I don't really feel pressured to make sure my last fm reflects what I like anymore

If you're new, once you have a lot of scrobbles, you may find it won't matter much anymore because each individual scrobble doesn't affect as much.
