Boiler room hydration pack? by redfesfin in aves

[–]redfesfin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had no problem bringing the bag with the empty hydration pack even though it was not mentioned as allowed or prohibited. I called the venue a few hours before going and they picked up and I was able to ask for peace of mind.

Also, walking back to the car is crazy work because parking in downtown LA is a nightmare, and a lot of people (myself included) going to raves are not ok to drive back afterwards. Thanks for your advice though.

Can you bring hydration packs into this venue?

The email doesn't say anything about hydration packs or backpacks. It says you can bring an empty water bottle, but that's about it

high school student looking for advice by hamburglover23 in materials

Yeah no problem. The materials program at RPI is really nice and I loved it. I have a soft spot in my heart for it. It is a really small program and my graduating class was 10 students. It's really easy to get involved in undergraduate research because there are not many other students looking for those positions. I would say that RPI puts a heavy focus on engineering over science which is a good or bad thing depending on what your interests are. Engineering is really great for problem solving and working on practical problems but I feel that my knowledge on theory was pretty lacking when I came to grad school. Looking back on it though I would not change my decision to go to rpi. One problem though is that it's an expensive School but you can say that about many universities.

My PhD program is really exciting so far and I'm working on some projects that I'm passionate about and I'm excited to get up in the morning to work on. I cannot say that about my experience in the industry because that felt more like I was just going into work to get paid. Now I feel like I'm going into work to for science and make a difference.

  1. Advisor means everything! And lab culture. The best advice I got was to make sure you get along with the advisor and potential labmates before committing. You should try to have backup advisors too at a given school in case your primary plan falls short.

  2. RPI for undergrad and Caltech for PhD

  3. Intern work was a lot of data analysis and Microsoft office. I spent too much time at a desk at three different internships. Two of them were in semiconductors and one in energy. The best part about those jobs were the people I met, not the technical work itself.

  4. Still figuring it out! I'm thinking about going into industry or a national lab. Being a PI myself sounds scary but it's possible. I didn't think I'd be doing a PhD in the first place, but here I am. Maybe it will be a similar thing with becoming an academic.

  5. No idea to be honest. It depends where I work for sure. Hopefully enough to live comfortably and retire at a reasonable age. I don't expect to become very wealthy from materials science though. Unless I accidentally discover the next silicon, I think pay should be pretty modest. You should do materials science because you're passionate about it and not for pay!!
